“In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. My last confession was one day ago.”

Effie finished tucking the last bit of her long red pigtails up under the hat she wore, staring at the jewelry store in front of her. She didn’t know why she was here or what she was doing, all she could hear or think was white noise. there was something deep inside her, pushing her on, forcing her…

Something she could no longer stop.

“I have committed sins of lust 22 times, profaning God and my husband’s memory.”

Her tongue darted out, licking over her lips as she snapped the last wire for the alarm, before checking the circuitry, watching as the signals started to fade out. She unhooked her toy from the alarm and closed the box, locking it again to cover her trial before using the lock picks Tim had given her with her Sparrow suit to open the door.

“I have coveted someone else’s belongings fifteen times…”

Rows of glittering jewels were laid out before her and she took a breath, staring at them before her cane (question mark top included) slammed down into the glass, staining the rubies and emeralds with clear shards.

Gloved hands easily grabbed handfuls of the necklaces and bracelets, stuffing them into a bag resting on her hip. She barely looked at them, not interested in what she took...just that it became hers the second her fingers grabbed it.

“I have wished harm against another two hundred and fifty-six times…”

One piece caught her eye however, resting in a special glass case all by itself, the black velvet under it worn from years of hands touching it. The lock on the case was a struggle to pick, but Effie’s black gloved fingers finally wrapped around it. She lifted the piece from it’s pillow, carefully holding the antique piece as she turned a mirror towards her.

“O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended you and I detest all my sins, because I dread the loss of heaven and the pains of hell. But most of all because I have offended you, my God, who are all good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve with the help of your grace, to confess my sins, to do penance and to amend my life. Amen.”

She lifted the necklace, carefully sliding it around her neck, the cool metal feeling pleasant against her skin, the weight pleasant. She gently touched the flower above her cleavage with a gloved finger, admiring herself in the mirror before her head jerked, sirens sounding.

She spun, snatching the last of the rings and stuffing them into her pouch before running for the door, vanishing into the night, the stolen jewelry a heavy weight against her thigh as she ran, thoughts and reality slowly returning to her mind, screaming at her, asking what she had done.

“God the Father of mercies, through the death and resurrection of his Son has reconciled the world to himself and sent the Holy Spirit among us for the forgiveness of sins; through the ministry of the Church may God give you pardon and peace, and I absolve you from your sins in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.”
