PERSONALITY
FIRST IMPRESSION: Very stone-cold.
BEHAVIOUR: People have often unoriginally described Dylan upon first meeting as being very stand-offish. It’s an easy way to describe her after first meeting her. Dylan does not go out of her way to make a first good impression, and while very placid on the outside (some may say to a cold degree) she radiates honesty. She is practical and thinks that lying or beating around the bush is stupid, so she will be truthful to just about anyone right off the bat—no matter who they are or what their personalities are like. She is very unforgiving about her straight-forward ways and doesn’t seem to have too much remorse if she hurts someone’s feelings. When meeting Dylan, people will initially see a straight-forward woman who calls a spade a spade. There is a cool iciness to Dylan, an untouchable vibe she gives off (on purpose) to make sure that people keep their distance unless she chooses otherwise. She is not a tender-hearted person and will not easily fold.

Since she’s a very practical person, Dylan has a hard time really getting into or listening to whims of fancy and has a pretty closed mind. It’s not difficult for her to think outside of the box, as she's got enough knowledge on her side to get to the bottom of weird situations. But in situations that Dylan cannot manipulate to her own standards or to the whims of her control, she is easily frustrated and will often run away from problems without dealing with them. When Dylan does deal with her problems, it's not exactly in a very productive manner. She'll usually just resort to avoidance to get people to back off. Dylan is hardly unimaginative and will day-dream frequently, but tends to think her time could be better spent. She doesn’t believe in miracles and doesn’t think that dreams come true and is harshly cynical because of it. If you want something to happen, you have to do it yourself. That is the only philosophy she lives by.

It has been an issue since childhood, but Dylan is extremely mistrusting of people. It will take a very long time for her to open up, much longer than most people are willing to put up with to develop a decent friendship with her. This doesn’t seem to bother her—though it does and she wishes she could change it—and she seems to go along well with her own independent company. She’s excellent at being alone and has convinced herself that she likes it better that way, even though she secretly wishes she could figure out a way to relate to people better. While the number of people that can get close to her is extremely small, they are the types of friendships that are there for life. Dylan is exceedingly loyal and steadfast. She won’t let other people mess around with the ones she cares about and doesn’t take crap from anyone. While icy and difficult at first, those that Dylan willingly lets past her exterior can see a slightly warmer side of her personality; but this is a veil that is seldom lifted. When it comes to people who are a little different or outside the scope of the typically accepted, Dylan will be extremely kind and almost gentle; a complete personality flop. She seems to relate better to those types of people and will reach out a hand to them if she thinks it won't be batted away.

While initially a little extreme and tough to take, Dylan is just merely rough around the edges. She likes to tell it like it is and likes to have things go her way and is pretty awful at handling situations that don’t go the way she’s planned. Dylan has no delusions or desires about doing anything or saying anything that isn’t true to who she is. Dylan can be extremely vindictive and jealous, and likes her hard shell to be completely in tact. It gets penetrated more than people think; but she goes out of her way with sarcasm and stand-offish qualities to make sure that it’s not visible to anyone that isn’t looking. She is terrified of anyone seeing beneath the strength she seems to possess to view her insecurities and has only let a handful of chosen people in that far—and has lived to often regret those she’s put trust into. Dylan knows that she’s a pill, and sort of embraces that as a positive aspect even if she’s smart enough to know otherwise.

On the positive side she is clear-headed, independent, strong, honest, determined, strong-willed and practical. On the negative side she is a little arrogant, condescending, blatantly sarcastic, and judgemental.

With a physique she works very hard to maintain, her natural good-looks are well accentuated by her glowing complexion, large and dark eyes, and a nearly black mane of hair. She stands out in a crowd and is known to catch a few eyes, often without even trying. However, her very slender figure often tends to give her the appearance as someone who is physically weak, often inviting more than a fair share of people to believe she is a meek push-over.

BACKGROUND
HISTORY: Both Isabel Perez and Ben Sandoval were created by the same alchemist in Orlando, Florida, and were dismissed after their service when both of them had ‘surpassed their use.’ Together the two fled from Florida, making their way across southern United States in search of a place to settle down. Ben was quite infatuated with Isabel, considering the woman to be the love of his life. Unfortunately, Isabel never felt quite as strongly. A part of her still longed for her creator, whom she loved quite dearly, but the desire was a deeply secret one. Isabel never shared her feelings toward her alchemist with Ben, nor did she ever explain to him the relationship she’d had with the man before she’d been cast out. Much like the relationship with Ben and Isabel, Isabel’s feelings toward her alchemist were never fully returned. This didn’t keep Isabel from playing up their relationship in her mind and memories, creating it the end-all of love affairs to pine after.

Three months after the two had been cast out and run away looking for shelter together, Isabel discovered she was pregnant. The two of them finally settled down in New Orleans, Louisiana so that Isabel could give birth to the twin girls she was carrying. Having children was something neither Ben nor Isabel wanted. Having to look after young children put a stint in the plans with the freedom they finally had, and it also forced Isabel to rethink her plans to leave Ben to head back to Florida. Not wanting to raise the two children she was carrying on her own, and not fully wanting to just give them up to strangers (who would be able to deal with two elemental children?) Isabel decided to just have the children and make a go at this new life offered to her. She never married Ben, though he asked constantly, and after the twins Dylan and Taylor were born, the four moved into a cottage on the banks of the Mississippi River.

Being raised with Isabel Perez as a mother wasn’t easily managed. She wanted Dylan and Taylor to grow up as separate people with separate personalities, so the two girls clinging to each other wasn’t pleasing. She often sent Ben off with Taylor for days at a time while keeping Dylan at home so the two girls would get used to being apart. To put it mildly, Isabel was a tough woman to be alone with. Even while Dylan was a toddler, Isabel had a habit of cracking down at the first signs of any wrong-doing. Dylan was a little bit better than her twin Taylor, a very inquisitive and talkative child who was always off and away trying to discover some grand mystery. Dylan was a little more on the obedient side, which probably stemmed from the fact that she spent more time with their mother than Taylor had to.

Both girls naturally began to show signs of their elemental abilities from the get-go. While not strong at first and without practice, Isabel actually enjoyed showing her girls how to practice and hone their abilities, while Ben was more involved in just wanting to be a father—not a mentor for their preternatural abilities. It was clear early on that Dylan was going to be the more advanced of the two girls, as her attention to detail and dedication was quite a bit better than her sister’s. Dylan showed great stamina and interest when it came to her powers. She was dutiful to her mother’s every sudden whim and worked hard at trying to stay out of any unnecessary trouble. Their father schooled them at home, teaching them math, literature, French, science and any other subject under the moon that he saw fit for them to learn. And with his far-reaching interests, that happened to be just about anything he could come across. His favourite pastime was taking the girls down to the river or to a swamp and letting them play and learn with the wildlife in the ecosystem. Because of the element from which she was born, Dylan loved these little outings more than anything else, and grew a bond with her father over their shared love of aquatic life.

But living in a place like New Orleans and trying to stay out of trouble became a mighty difficult thing. When Dylan was fifteen, she got a part-time job in a small convenience store on in the infamous Bourbon Street. The site was popular for many robberies, and after surviving at least three hold-up’s, Dylan’s father asked her to find a new job. It was hard to get a job without references, since the Sandoval’s didn’t exactly have a whole lot of friends or acquaintances outside of each other. Wanting his daughters to be a little more well-rounded, Ben convinced his wife to let the girl’s take high school with other kids their age—as they knew well enough to keep their abilities hidden from the world as best they could. Entering high school was a nightmare for Dylan, but an adventure for Taylor. Both of them had surpassed the high school curriculum and were studying university level assignments with their father, and had no difficulty catching up and receiving almost top grades in their public school. Being free-spirited and individualistic, Taylor had absolutely no problems making friends. Dylan on the other hand became a rather extravagant loner, with only two or three close-ish friends to keep her company.

The morning after their seventeenth birthday, Dylan woke to discover that her mother was gone. Their father had no idea where Isabel had gone, or whether or not she’d be back. The abrupt abandonment didn’t seem to bother Taylor—but it clearly disturbed Dylan. After a few months passed with still no word from Isabel, Dylan lost any hope that their mother might return and instead grew angry and bitter toward the woman for up and leaving without a word. Ben was also positively destroyed when the love of his life was all of a sudden gone from his life, and he slowly began to withdraw from his two daughters. Both Taylor and Dylan grew frustrated, and despite their obvious personality differences, the two were still closer together than with anyone else, and eventually moved out shortly after graduation. Their father stuck around in New Orleans for about three more months before taking off for South America.

Not having much desire for further schooling, Taylor began working while Dylan attended school and worked part-time. Dylan began taking Ecology and Evolutionary Biology classes at Tulane University (thanks to scholarship money) while also working at Aquarium of the Americas. The two lived in an apartment together, and with Taylor being rather social, their apartment was usually filling to the brim with people. Dylan maintained a rather solitude existence throughout her university years, still mostly sticking to a small assortment of close friends rather than a group of acquaintances. Just shy after graduating, New Orleans was hit by a hurricane and after their apartment building was trashed, the girls were left with a lack of alternatives and decided to leave New Orleans. Leaving her home was traumatic enough, since Dylan really loved New Orleans, and she eventually moved to find her father.

The two lived together for a few months while Taylor left for up north, her first venture into the world completely solo. While living just the two of them in Costa Rica, Ben confessed to Dylan that he knew Isabel had been planning to leave but had hoped in not badgering her, she’d stay. He also admitted that he’d spent time looking for her, and his last sighting had been in Florida where she had been created by her alchemist. Dylan left for Pensacola, determined to find her mother and learn more about the alchemist who had created her parents. During her travels she tried many times to get in touch with Taylor, but her twin was all but unreachable. After two weeks of living in Pensacola and squatting in somebody’s houseboat while searching for any trace of her mother, Dylan eventually gave up and decided it was time to head back to New Orleans. Unfortunately, Dylan didn’t leave early enough and was caught by fisherman who worked on the doc where the houseboat was being kept—and after even trying to use her abilities to escape—Dylan was arrested and put in jail. It was while in jail that a scout from Halcyon located her, and offered to help her legally get out of jail if she enrolled in the school. Not wanting to stay in jail, Dylan relented and agreed to the terms. Now she is joining the ranks of Halcyon Halls, along with other creatures such as herself, despite many years of trying to blend in with humans while honing her abilities on the side.
