…PERSONALITY…

Annie is brash and occasionally a little bit arrogant. She used to be very self-assured but her confidence has suffered somewhat due to her professional setbacks. She considers herself ‘normal’ in spite of her non-human heritage and has, like her mother, spent most of her life trying to ignore it. She considers her sister the luckier of the two of them for having taken after their father’s family and not expressed any precognitive traits. She finds the supposed ‘power’ attached to her heritage irritating, as her visions come unbidden and uncontrollably; she cannot will them to happen and finds them useless for not being able to use them to her own benefit. She has been told by others of her kind that with meditation and training in concentration, she could learn to focus her abilities, but she has not yet bothered to try.

She is loyal to a fault; it can sometimes be difficult to get past being a mild acquaintance with her, but once someone is in, they are in for good. She rarely lies, except to hide her embarrassment at her career trajectory, and is an avid proponent of the theory that the truth is usually best, even if it hurts. Swinging between these two extremes is a good indicator of her somewhat dichotomous nature, in which she desperately wants to ‘always do the right thing’ but will also easily convince herself that a negative action taken for the ‘right’ reasons is still fine. This ease to swing back and forth from two extremes is also a trait inherited from her mother, who is at once an old-fashioned southern belle with deep-seated religious beliefs and a free-wheeling proto-hippie who doesn’t believe in marriage and is a constant cheerleader towards her younger daughter’s choice of a career in law enforcement -- a devout Christian with recognized otherworldly heritage.

Annie was raised in a loving but fairly religious household, and though she does not ascribe to her parents’ strict Christian beliefs, she still celebrates the holidays and insists she does not drink, smoke, or swear, primarily out of habit; this is easily proven untrue after any length of time spent with her, as she has been known to drop an f-bomb or two when playing video games, typically has a bottle of vodka in the back of her freezer, and a pack of Marlboro menthol lights in her bag.

Her mother, originally from Georgia, raised both Annie and her sister with a strict set of social rules that have left Annie with an old-fashioned sense of etiquette -- lots of ‘yes, ma’am’ and ‘no sir’ to those she sees as deserving respect, giving up seats for the elderly, and the like, however her own notions of right and wrong lead her to unconsciously select who might be deserving of such kindness from the outset. She feels extremely uncomfortable in wearing any clothing that might be considered provocative and only accepted jeans and leggings as regular wear in recent years, having been made to wear dresses and skirts until she graduated high school. She can be somewhat sarcastic when in a foul mood but has a very easy sense of humor, prone to laughing out of turn when not in her professional-minded ‘on the job’ mode; she can switch herself on and off in that manner, maintaining strict professionalism when actively working but becoming immediately more cheerful and easy going when able to relax.

…HISTORY…

Annie was born to Isabelle King, a CPA, and Jerry Robinette, a local radio DJ, in Philadelphia, PA, in 1991. She is the youngest of two children, her older sister Molly having been born two years prior. They shared a vaguely idyllic childhood in a lower middle-class Philadelphia neighborhood, with the girls and their mother being some of the only people of color in their area. Their parents never married; Molly, though set on attending college, became pregnant at 17 (to her mother’s everlasting horror) and dropped out of high school to work and raise her son, Teddy; Molly married her high school boyfriend, the father of her child, but they divorced after five tumultuous years. Annie felt terrible for her sister and, though she loves her nephew, is dedicated to remaining child-free and putting herself and her career first in her life, vowing never to make the sort of mistakes her sister did.

All Annie ever wanted in life was to be an FBI agent. Her parents let her watch reruns of the old Robert Stack series The Untouchables and a romanticized daydream of the exciting life of a federal agent was born. Her mother, Isabelle, stressed to her that her Kekasmai heritage must remain hidden if she ever wanted to take a governmental job, but Annie wasn’t worried; outwardly, she easily passed as human, and her enhanced senses would only be an investigative boon. She worked hard, persevered, and earned early enrollment to Drexel University, where she majored in Criminal Justice. Graduating at 21 years old, she worked for the Philadelphia PD for three years before applying to the FBI.

Annie was a rising star thanks to a few fortuitous visions during her probationary period and on track to have a strong career with the FBI, working out of the Miami field office, until her own ambition got in her way. Faced with evidence that a superior could be implicated in a drug and extortion scheme, Annie recruited two other agents and set up an off-the-books operation to expose the supposed wrongdoing. It was an unmitigated disaster; one of the agents she recruited, Agent Hardison, was badly injured during a firefight and his career with the Bureau was effectively ended. Further investigation showed that the evidence against Annie’s superior was a false flag operation engineered by a non-agent FBI liaison who was in the pocket of a powerful drug cartel. Had Annie taken the initiative to do further research before acting or involving other agents, many felt the treachery would have been easily discovered.

The nature of the incident that led to Hardison’s injury was hushed and handled internally as to save the Bureau any embarrassment. Annie was put on unpaid leave for nearly six months while her fate was determined, with everything from termination to actual federal prison time being considered. When the final verdict came down, Annie was shocked to learn that she wasn’t fired after all; a recent lawsuit filed against the Miami field office regarding treatment of women in the workplace turned the tide and Annie found herself promoted for having “acted in good faith”, and sent to work as a satellite out of the Las Vegas field office, investigating a long-term spate of disappearances in the small town of Searchlight. Unbeknownst to Annie until she checked in at the Las Vegas office, she was being shifted off to a dead-end position. The Bureau did not expect results, as most disappearances were unofficially considered to involve transient populations who most likely just moved on. She was simply being put out to pasture, without the scandal of a dismissal or the threat of further legal action against the Miami office.

Her current position as Special Agent in Charge of Southeast Nevada Missing Persons was created in 1967 out of pity for an ailing Las Vegas office agent who was too young to retire but unable to perform regular duties; he died within two years and the position was vacant until the early 1980s, when another problem agent was given the position. The second agent quit within four months. Annie took up the position with determination towards actual progress but has found dead ends left and right and mostly given up; she receives a regular pay as well as a three-bedroom manufactured home on a third of an acre of land and use of a black Volkswagen Golf hatchback as part of her salary, and spends more time playing on her Xbox than doing any actual investigation, though she is require to make perfunctory check-ins in Las Vegas at least once a month. She is extremely ashamed of where she has landed professionally and regularly lies to her parents and sister, who still live in Philadelphia; they believe she is on an organized crime task force of some kind. Annie is desperate to redeem herself, but often too angry at her lot to really do anything to change it.

…SPECIES…

Annie is a Kekasmai (κέκασμαι), a type of dimensional being thought to be descended from the bloodline of Cassandra of Troy. She has slight-to-medium precognitive abilities, typically flashes that come to her unbidden and don’t always directly affect her. Occasional larger (and usually more important) visions are often followed by migraines that put her completely out of commission or, far more dangerously, episodes of short-term memory loss. Her Kekasmai heritage is passed down from her mother’s line, but unfortunately her direct family history is unknown and she is unable to find its impetus, which remains a considerable source of irritation.

Physically, Kekasmai look almost entirely human, though they are prone to have slightly oversized eyes, can see very well in the dark, and don’t blink as often as would be required of a human. In a physiological exam, there would be little indication that they are anything but human; post-mortem studies of body chemistry, however, would show more than twice the amount of sensory neurons and receptors than would occur in the average human. Kekasmai have no overly-enhanced physical strength, however they do have highly perceptive vision, hearing, and sense of smell, which at times allows them to react more quickly and decisively than they might have otherwise. It is thought that these expanded senses help inform the Kekasmai’s sense of precognition, meaning that some smaller episodes of Seeing are actually flashes of deductive reasoning based in an overload of sensory information.

Kekasmai have no specific affiliation related to their species. They are as capricious as humans in deciding how to align themselves within the supernatural community. They are not particularly well-liked among other otherworldly entities, however, due to what is considered a largely muddled bloodline; some consider them to be half-breeds between humans and full dimensional beings, though to anyone well-versed in modern genetics, they are simply considered to be another type of dimensional being.
