personality
SEXUALITY: Heterosexual VISION: In what seems to be his endless pursuit to make people safe and happy, the bedroom is probably likely to run in the same vein. Ray is a giver and he's a passionate lover. He cares very much about people and goes to great lengths to illustrate it, so if he finds himself especially smitten with someone, she'll be a lot more likely to know it than not. He's fairly vanilla, but not opposed to trying new things.
While he'd like to think his most stand-out trait is the fact that he's a genius, the thing that most people notice first about Ray Palmer is that he's got a very positive outlook on most things. He can find the good in just about any situation and just about any person. Ray is optimistic and cheerful under most circumstances, conjuring the "excited puppy" trope of a character. But most of all, Ray cares about people. More than anything, he wants to do something that really matters.
Beyond that, Ray is a skilled business man and billionaire. He's ambitious, with a high business acument, and when in business mode, he's highly professional and he's very good at his job. Ray knows how to talk to people, he knows what he wants, and he goes all out to try to get it. Even with that said, though, Ray's compassionate and kind and genuine; he isn't a sleazy white collar, even if he can be a little sneaky when the situation calls for it.
Ray has a high moral compass. He acts first and asks questions later and it never occurs to him to think through the potential consequences or collateral damage that might be left in his wake. Ray's motivation stems largely from helping others, because he feels a lot of guilt for the death of his fiancee, Anna, who he feels died because he couldn't save her; he discounts the fact that she was murdered in favor of mentally punishing himself for not being able to stop it. He's largely selfless, as well, willing to take an incredible pay cut to rebuild a city just as quickly as he's willing to give up everything to join a team set to travel through time to save the future of the world he lives in. Ray has been known to encourage things that upset him because he knows that they'll make someone he cares about happy: case in point, not officially being broken up with Felicity Smoak as such, but sensing the end of the relationship, when she asks to use his jet to fly to Nanda Parbat with Oliver without explaining why, even though it looks pretty bad from where he's standing, Ray lets her.
He always means well, but once in a while things don't go completely according to plan and Ray struggles with that a little. He's a work in progress, in that respect. He's not so naive as to think that everyone has the same wholesome desires in their heart, deep down, but he does appear to wish it to be so and when his hopes are dashed by the actions of others, Ray takes it hard. It frustrates him to find that he's misplaced his trust in a person and that he's been betrayed or made to look a fool.
This is a man who wears his heart on his sleeve unashamedly. Sometimes, it's endearing to see a grown man as enthusiastic, excitable, and passionate about things, but on other occasions, it can be obnoxious and overwhelming, which really depends on the personality of the other person more than anything else. Or maybe the situation in which they find themselves. In a similar vein, because Ray doesn't always remember to think before he speaks, he's more than a little awkward when he gets nervous, stressed, or especially excited about something, because he's prone to babbling.
He stands strong and stays firm with what he believes in and he puts forth a great deal of effort to remain true to himself and his morals. In spite of the fact that he's a little awkward socially, and a little silly, he's nobody's doormat. Ray can be serious when he needs to be and he very much will.
He's loyal and caring and it's important to him that the people around him are happy, so he'll do anything he can to try to facilitate that. He's a good listener (even when it would benefit him to step away and distance himself rather than offer to lend an ear) and he's very understanding. In short, Ray is a good friend to have.
special powers/abilities
STRENGTHS: Compassion, business acumen, genius IQ of 140, indomitable will, master engineering, and charisma WEAKNESSES: Emotionally motivated, easily trusting, and while it's a personality strength, overall, his predilection to wear his heart on his sleeve can be a great weakness.
Ray is in peak physical condition. He trains regularly and keeps his body in tip top shape. It shows. For his efforts, he's both physically fit and strong. He's also got experience with hand-to-hand combat.
Much of his special abilities, however, come from the A.T.O.M. Exosuit. When he's the Atom, the suit provides him the ability to withstand damage from bullets, arrows, and explosions, due to its structure: it's made of a dwarf star alloy. In addition to being damn near indestructible, it allows him to shoot off photon blasts and compressed hard light blasts. It also has electricity projection abilities. Probably most important and impressive of all, the suit can miniaturize select targets, most pointedly, Ray when he's wearing it, and he can shrink down to the size of an atom, which is to say...pretty freaking tiny. He actually doesn't have his suit with him at the moment, though, so...that's not all that helpful, for now.
