Appearance: Ayla is tall, approaching 5'9" in height. She has long blond hair that she often weaves into small plaits that she keeps held back from her face by a leather band. Her eyes are a liquid blue and often reveal things she doesn't actually say. She wears leather animal skins that are sewn into rough garments resembling a tunic and pants. She also wears a moccasin like shoe on her feet during the winter, and usually nothing during the summer. Also during the summer, she takes the sleeves off her tunics and wears a short skirt-like garment. There are no distinguishing marks about her except the four parallel scars on her upper thigh.

PERSONALITY & BACKGROUND

Personality: Personality: Ayla is very accepting of other people, even when they aren't accepting of her. She loves doing things for people and helping in any way she can. She's very curious and innovative. She is very kind and friendly. She learns quickly and can hear a language once and learn to speak it. She has a great sense of humor. She does not tolerate intolerance and she conceals her emotions. Emotions weren't tolerated in the Clan, and she has learned to supress them since.
History: When Ayla was 5 years old there was a terrible earthquake. It killed her mother and her people. She had been out playing at the time and was separated from her mother. Disoriented and afraid, she didn't know how to get back home. She wandered, trying to find her people, for several days. She was hungry, tired, naked and alone. At one point, she stumbled upon a cave lion. She crawled into a crevice in a rock that the lion couldn't get through. But it did reach a paw in and draw four deep parallel gashes across her thigh. She hid in the crevice for nearly a day until she was drawn out by her desperate thirst. She drank from a nearby stream before collapsing from starvation and fever.

A group of neanderthals, also called "Clan", had also been displaced by the earthquake. They came upon the prone form of the girl and passed her. However, the medicine woman, Iza, of the clan couldn't pass up the opportunity to help someone. She asked the leader of the clan if she could take her with them. He reluctantly agreed, even though she looked different from them. It took several days, but she was nursed back to health. They could not say her name and could only manage to get "Ayla" out. So, Ayla she became. It took her some time to learn their language, as they used very little verbal communication and used their hands more.

She grew up with the clan and lived with them for about seven years. In that time, she learned to use a sling and hunt. Even though women were forbidden to hunt. She also learned Iza's skill. The clan had a hereditary memory that Ayla didn't share. This caused her to learn quickly and on the first try. She didn't have room for failure. Later in her life, this would prove useful when she needed to learn the languages of other people. She also became the object of hatred for the clan leader's son, Broud. She learned to use a sling and hunt. She was repeatedly raped by Broud because he knew she hated it, and it was the one way he could break her spirit. And it did, until she found out that she was pregnant. Knowing she was going to have a child (at 10 mind you), nothing could dampen her spirits. Eventually, Broud gave up. When she gave birth to a half cro-magnon, half neanderthal baby, he was called deformed. It was a clan rule that any babies born with deformities had to be left to the elements.

Ayla couldn't see her baby killed. She knew he wasn't deformed, he just had traits of both races of people. She left with her baby and stayed in a nearby cave until he was considered a part of the clan. When she returned with Durc, her baby, it basically forced the clan to accept and name him. This caused some anger among some of the Clan. Ayla had never really fit in, with her high forhead, pale hair and eyes and her thin lanky height. She was what the Clan referred to as the Others. And every time she did something that defied the Clan rules or traditions, it made it harder and harder to accept her.

Finally, she was banished and forced to leave her son behind. She traveled to a valley where she lived on her own. She barely survived the winter and had to teach herself to hunt larger game for the resources and store enough for the winter. She invented several things that aided her during her time alone in the valley. She even adopted a baby horse and called her Whiney, after the sound she made. Some time later she also found a hurt baby cave lion. She called him Baby. A few years after that, she came upon a pair of men who had wandered too close to Baby's pride and his cave. Baby killed one of the men, but the other was still alive when she found them.

Burying the one man, she took the other back to her cave and nursed him back to health. She later came to find out that his name was Jondalar. They had a terrible time communicating at first because Jondalar spoke verbally while Ayla spoke mostly with her hands. Eventually, the syntax and sentance structure came back to her from the time she was able to speak it as a child. From then on, she learned quickly and many other languages as well.

Out camping one day, Ayla was stolen from her home and Jondalar and brought to a strange new land called Mirage.
