Character Information

Character Information
Name: Libby "The Librarian" Spencer
Gender: Female
Age: 25
Birthday: February 2, 1996
Greatest Ambition: To keep the past alive and unite (or at least bring peace between) the tribes

Physical Description:
Eyes: pale, icy blue
Hair: long, dark brown to black (sometimes with random colored streaks), curly to wavy to straight
Height: 5'6"
Weight: 145 lbs.
Build: healthy curves
Clothing: Before the virus, Libby was far too happy a person to be labeled emo, Goth, or a dark romantic, but her favored styles of clothing always seemed to fall under those stereotypical categories. However, her colors of dress are not strictly restrained to dark, somber colors. On more than one occasion, one could very well find Libby in a tasteful white corset and floor length dress, or even a frilly pink skirt. She may even forget her eccentric style for a few days, and stalk her beloved library in a regular pair of jeans and a t-shirt.

Distinguishing Marks: : left eyebrow piercing, curved scar on left elbow, odd little birthmark on her bum (family teased that she should get a tattoo so it looks like a full butterfly instead of just its body – hasn't got up the guts to do so)

Sexual Orientation: straight
Single or taken: taken by [info]wolf_leader
Best friend: [info]wolf_leader, her books, the run-down library, and a gray stray cat she named Tank

Personality: Three words could sum up Libby's personality perfectly: She loves books. Once one understands this aspect, all of her quirks fall into place. Before she could understand large words and small print, Libby would sit for hours with the dictionary, pretending to read, and merely enjoying the way the pages felt as she turned the pages. Through her school career, she devoured book after book, savoring each one (though, as with most teens, the required reading left a bitter taste). She greatly looked forward to research projects, relishing the discovery of information more than the actual organizing of it into the standard five-paragraph essay (more than once did she strike a deal with a friend for them to write her paper if Libby did their research). While her fellow classmates perused glamorous careers in engineering and electronics, Libby was quite content to continue her work in the library, going to college in hopes of earning a master's degree in library science. She only managed to get her bachelor's before the virus struck. The English major now used her mostly useless education to further the education of others. She keeps a daily journal of events, and cares for the local library as if it were her child. When Wolf does not require her advice, Libby can be found at the library, losing herself in any genre of books. Occasionally, Libby can seem to act a bit strangely and out of character...almost as if she is in a movie. This is all due to her odd coping mechanism: to deal with the pain of losing everyone she loved, she sometimes takes on the personality of a favored character, pretending her reality is little more than fiction.

This odd little talent, if that's what you would like to call it, comes in very handy when hosting a story time of sorts at the library for the children in the area. The children, encouraged by her "performance," forget about their troubles for a few hours, losing themselves as well in elaborate tales. Therein lays another quirk about Libby. Never does she desire to have children of her own, or to even adopt, or have a child hanging around her for a long period of time. Libby adores children, and can hardly turn them away or disappoint them, but if they stay around her for too long, she gets irritable with their incessant whining and griping. She also tends to shy away from the male species, by either avoiding them all together or staring them down should they be silly enough to cross her icy path. There are a few who have managed to earn the right to be on her pleasant side, but this is only after they have extensively proven themselves to be a breed of man better than her father (see history for more info).

After November 2020
After Libby's trek to the outside world beyond Sundance, she developed a more tolerant nature. The horrors and trials in other cities who have yet to develop a decent society have encouraged her to see how good the citizens of Sundance have it. While she still values her job as tribe historian, she is now on a mission to unite the tribes, or at least do what she can to make sure selfish desires don't plunge the fragile social structure of the city into turmoil.

Personal History:
Libby Spencer was born into a middle class family in Oklahoma. There she lived with her mother and father, Josephine (or just Jo) and Eric, and her sister Tabitha (six years her senior). Shortly after Libby turned 10, her high school sweetheart parents decided to end their tumultuous marriage. It was an action even naïve little Libby saw coming. All of her other friends were products of a broken home; it was only a matter of time before she joined them. That and her father spent less and less time at home, using work as an excuse. Three years later, Libby would figure out that her beloved daddy had a mistress. Tabitha refused her father custody of her, and Libby was not about to be left behind, so Eric was free to restart his life on his own. Josephine moved her children to Fort Collins, Colorado to be near relatives. Here, Libby spent much of her time with her kooky grandmother Nancy (or Nana).

Nana practically became Libby’s caregiver as Jo was often busy working two jobs. At night, before bed, Nana would tuck both girls in and recite old family stories to the girls to help them sleep. But while Tabitha matured and became more interested in boys than stories and good grades, Libby remained in awe of her grandmother. The old woman was wise, as well as creative, and always a bit on the crazy side. She encouraged Libby to read whenever she had a spare moment and to do well in school (“for you never know when you will have to be the teacher”). Jo never remarried as she was quite enjoyed her freedom, while Tabitha almost became a teen mother (miscarriage). After her father’s selfishness and seeing the losers Tabitha was involved with, Libby still did not see what all the hullabaloo was about with boys. Even by age 18, a college student and working two part-time jobs, Libby said she was too busy for a relationship. A friend once got up the gall to ask if she was gay, at which Libby answered in the negative, but admitted that women seemed to be a much more sensible choice than men (at least another woman would try to understand you instead of tossing you aside).

By this point, Tabitha had long since moved out to live on her own in who knows where, while Libby remained living at home, going to school, and taking care of her mother and Nana. Just as she started her first year toward her master’s degree in library science, the virus struck their city. Her father long forgotten, and Tabitha nowhere to be found, Libby had only her mother and Nana to comfort her while the world fell to pieces around them. She soon only had her grandmother. Jo caught the virus from work and died within the week. Silent in her grief, Libby became an emotionless shell, too shocked at the tragedy around her to react. Her sorrow received release only when she slept, when her emotions were most unguarded. Then she would cry such wretched sobs that her Nana would shake her awake, and then wrap her old, wrinkled arms around her. She would rock Libby and whisper strange stories before Libby finally slipped into dreamless slumber.

Not long after her mother’s death, Nana and Libby were sent to a quarantine camp - a hotel. Conditions were wretched with often six to eight people living in a room meant for two and death everywhere. Libby and her grandmother managed to have a one-bed room to themselves for a while before more people were assigned to their room. Nana tried to make the best of it by making up new stories with Libby. They kept to themselves in a corner of the room and were rarely bothered. Except one time when a girl by the name of Avery Richardson inquired as to what they were talking about an eventually joined in the creation of their tales. Avery had a brother, Brent, who Nana talked to frequently in hushed tones, but Libby chose to ignore him. Little did she realize that he would soon become the first male she ever trusted. Her Nana had apparently been having wild dreams, and felt the need to reveal these dreams to Brent and Avery. Eventually, Nana entrusted these tales to Libby, but as much as she loved and respected her grandmother, Libby assumed they were mere fantasies brought on by old age.

After many months, Nana finally fell ill with the virus, and soldiers ripped her from Libby's arms. Her sobbing at night had settled down for quite some time, but the trauma of losing her grandmother flared their occurrence. One night, as Libby suffered through her unconscious mourning, a guard crept in. the sniveling young woman made a perfect target: easy on the eyes, but most importantly, weak. Awoken by a sickening weight on her body, Libby managed a scream before being smothered by a pillow. She tried to fight and kick, but the guard’s girth kept her pinned in place. Libby felt his hands unfastening the button and zipper of her jeans and nearly vomited. Luckily for her, the ever honorable Brent was strong enough to hurl the beast to the floor and proceeded to bludgeon the guard. Avery was quick to join the fray. With the guard killed in the onslaught, they knew they had to flee or face retribution. Libby reluctantly agreed to join Avery and her hero of a brother, remembering the words of Nana: Follow the Wolf. And always remember the past, as painful as it can be; look to the future, though it may seem bleak; and keep your head in the present lest you lose it.

Libby left everything, her past and her family, behind to join the Richardson’s in their quest for hope.

Libby is historian for the Wolf tribe, and advisor to its leader Wolf Skyhorse (previously Brent). In a way, he owes his position of power to her, though she hardly ever takes credit for anything. She merely suggested his name to the crowd of people gathered who helped them fight for land. They agreed and that was that. She supports him, and hangs out in the background, advising him when he desires. Deep down, Libby admires Wolf and probably would not reject any advances of his, but she is a professional and will not let her emotions get in the way.

November 2020
Feeling antsy and bit adventurous, Libby left the city of Sundance to explore the outside world. She had hoped to find cities a little more stable than the one she came from. Perhaps she could study them, take notes, and bring some good advice back to Wolf. She was in for a rude awakening as most of the cities she traveled through remained as dangerous and chaotic as the day the virus ran rampant. It was as if she had stepped into the old wild west...or even into the age of pirates. There were shootouts in the streets and groups of pillaging ruffians who attacked loners, pillaging any valuables and doing what they please with their victims. For this reason, she often joined groups of other loners, just to have some strength in numbers, until she finally made her way back to her beloved Sundance...
