Character Information Name: Dawn Granger / Dove. Age: 25. Fandom: DC comics. Job: CLOTHES STORE Point in Fandom Taken From: before joining Birds of Prey; after Zero hour in which she killed Hank Hall. Brief History:Here. List of Abilities/Powers: Danger Sense Transformation: When in the presence of danger, whether to herself or others, Dawn Granger can call out the word "Dove" and be transformed into her Dove form. She does not need to be aware of the danger for the transformation to take place, so if she happened to say the word while unknowingly being in danger, the transformation would take place. The transformation only reacts to actual danger, so if Dawn incorrectly believed that she was in danger (such as when Barter abducted her) she would be unable to transform into Dove. The transformation wears off a short time after the danger has passed, unless Dove has received serious injuries which would kill Dawn, in which case she would remain as Dove until the danger from the injuries has passed. It is unknown how close to the danger she needs to be to transform, and Hank once went around a number of warehouses to find which was being used as a hideout for some criminals, saying "Hawk" outside each, until he changed. On high magic worlds she can remain as Dove for extended periods regardless of whether there is any danger present.
The transformation changes Granger into a minor force of Order and she gains some brilliant avian physical characteristics, which are usually hidden under her costume. The costume is normally irremovable while on Earth, but if it receives sufficient damage, it can tear and reveal part of her true form, which shines with the light of order, emitting a constant golden glow. Within realms with higher levels of magic, Dove can easily remove the costume and show her true form.
Hypervigilant: As Dove her natural aptitudes are enhanced, such as her ability as a good judge of people and situations allowing her to read people and objects in a situation, within seconds, and know how they will act and react.
Flight: She can also fly
Enhanced Agility: move with inhuman agility
Enhanced Durability: and can withstand a great deal of physical punishment and heal quickly.
Concentrated Radiance: On high magic worlds her powers are enhanced, she can concentrate her radiance into a blinding beam of light Enhanced Perception: her perception becomes so great that she becomes aware of most things within the realm.
White Light of Creation: during Blackest Night Dove was able to channel this particular force and destroy Black Lanterns as well as block a Black Lantern's aura reading power. With the end of Blackest Night it appears she is no longer has a connection to this force. PB: Katherine Heigl.
Writing Sample: Dove had left Platinum Flats over a year ago, presumably to recover from her fight with Extant, the latest alias used by Henry Hall who had turned turned Super Villain. It was true that it had taken a lot out of her to take him down, both physically, mentally and emotionally. He'd had the powers of both himself as Hawk and her as Dove, and the fact that it was him who wanted her dead didn't help her much. She had been the underdog walking into this fight, accepting that her fate may very well be to die or kill him- his death considered to be more horrible than hers, at least he wouldn't miss her if he succeeded he was too evil to. She'd had some advantages though, she knew her own personal weaknesses, that no one other than herself knew of, not many had tried to fight her, let alone kill her. She wasn't considered a threat like Batman and she had few enemies, if any- none of which she actually knew of, so no arch nemesis. During Zero hour she'd thought to the brink of death, of presumed disrepair but had pulled through long enough to destroy him and get away. She'd been greatly damaged in the fight and no one knew if she had survived or not, she'd left before they even knew what was going on in relation to Zero Hour, let alone the outcome of this battle.
She'd packed up only her bare necessities, her treasures- she'd drawn all of her savings out into cold hard cash, to make it untraceable; she didn't want to be found. In her bad she'd packed her pendant-locket necklace that Hank had given her on her 18th birthday, it was a simple silver heart pendant that opened and revealed one side with an Inscription of her name- 'Dawn-Marie' and the other side had a photo of the two of them inside. The picture had been taken on Coney Island in the States, on the big Ferris Wheel, they were both smiling and he had his arm around her holding her close- as if they were an inseparable, completely in love couple. He was ruggedly handsome, as usual in a red shirt and his hair combed back and she was looking petite and pretty in a blue cashmere sweater and her white hair flying as if a floating feather or wings behind them. That could undeniably have been the best day of her life, he'd spoilt her with his undivided attention all day and she was sure he'd lent in to kiss her more than once but pulled away hastily and walked off; she would of kissed him back- every time and cherished every millisecond. Dove had spent many a night looking at the pendant, flicking it open and closed, and staring down at the photo inside. She often looked at it when she was hidden away in her room, or even on a rooftop somewhere high above the city, where no one bothered her and the world seemed to stand still- no longer her concern. These were the two places that she had spent most of her time staring at the little photograph with the saddest look in her eyes as she stood or sat wishing that the look in his eyes- one of absolute love was not just a figment of her imagination.
Dawn had met Henry when she was 16, he'd just lost his partner and was grieving really badly- abusing alcohol and himself mostly. When she'd first met him he seemed an angry man, unapproachable and mean; but she'd heard the rumours that once he'd been a happy man- care free and genuinely happy- with a love for life and his job. At times throughout their time together she had seen the reminisce of him, the old him- the man who was happy and alright, the man he'd been before the death of the male Dove. Dove lived for those rare moments. Dove often felt like a school girl with a crush on her teacher as he taught her to control her powers- which was amusing to Dove, considering he was chaos and she was order and the voice of reasoning in the unlikely team they became. Henry's smile brightened her world, his laugh completed her life- she was smitten with him... utterly and completely in love with him, hopelessly. She soon came to realise that he would never love her, no matter how much she tried, no matter what she did... she could not make him love her, nor get over her love for him.
She'd also packed some of her clothes- Not many in comparison to any other woman, you'd think it was a trip for the weekend by the amount she had packed, not a complete change of residency. But when you realised how minimal her material possessions were you'd realise it was a large chunk that she took with her, enough for her to move away and start again. She'd packed the rest of her photos which were not many her parents wedding photo, the only photo she had of her and her younger brother and a couple of snaps of her and Henry both in costume and not. She'd tucked her then present journal away in her shoulder bag, she'd kept journals for years- the rest were on the top shelf of her wardrobe, and though it may be considered pathetic they mainly held thoughts on him- pages upon pages of rambles and gushy moments, her dreams. If someone were to find them they'd be thoroughly amused and realise how pathetically in love with him she was. The only other two items she had taken with her was a silver bracelet her mother had given her when she'd graduated from High School and her Dove costume. She didn't know why she'd taken it- she had no intention of ever putting it on again, she'd lost so much as Dove and she doubted she could take losing anything more.
A lot of different people had worried about her disappearance, apparently, mainly people in the Superhero associations that she'd been briefly apart of, but she'd tended to do a lot of solo work and worked with Hawk as a team. These people soon came to the simple conclusion that she'd fallen off the grid by choice or she was dead. There was no digging to do because they couldn't find Hawk and he was the only connection to Dove anyone knew. No one knew Dawn-Marie Granger here, only Dove. Many people had made up reasons for why she would of left willingly, blackmail, that she was actually dead, that she'd hung up her cape for good, some were wise enough to connect Hawk to her disappearance- just not in the right ways, because he'd turned evil she felt betrayed or that she was running away from him.
In a way she actually despised Dove because Dove could so easily be sidelined permanently without any consequences- there were better heroes to take on the fight for Justice and without Hank as Chaos, Order was not needed to keep the balance. There were no consequences for her not being Dove any more. Perhaps she packed the costume so if anyone did search her apartment they would not find out her secret identity, that was the intelligent reasoning she was known for, but deep down she knew it was because she could never truly part with this part of her and the costume was symbolic of such. After she had packed her life into her shoulder bag and a duffel bag Dawn was gone, as if she'd never really existed- except that the apartment held little bits and pieces of her you'd think it belonged to someone else, someone normal who'd gone on vacation and hadn't yet come home. Not someone who had been a superhero, killed the most important person in the world to her and had now left with no intentions on ever come back. Someone who had forced herself to move on from this place, this life and never thought she'd be coming back.
She'd moved to Washington D.C to work in the Jeffersonian institute alongside some of the worlds greatest Scientific minds. Her passion and love felt as if it had disappeared when she had destroyed Hank; but she ruled this out to simply be a figment of her imagination of having a broken heart. She had harnessed her love and passion, and diverted it to use if as a driver behind her scientific quest to find the cure for two ailments, Dementia and Alzheimers. She'd worked long hours, 6am to 11pm, 7 days a week. She was a pleasant colleague but refused to socialise- no drinks after work, nor attending the parties often held. She had relationship issues now and she knew one day she would have to face them, but that day was yet to come in Dawn's life- so it could easily be sidelined, just as Dove had been. She'd worked with numerous patients during the year, working mainly on developing prototypes of drugs and other medical procedures that could possibly give these people a better life- improve their living. They deserved lives without these ailments and this was Dawns aim- to give them back their lives and ensure they had better lives.
One day she'd travelled in to The Washington Home and Community Hospices on Upton Street. It was a couple of blocks from her laboratory, so not too far for her to pay a visit to one of her patients who had asked to see her. He wanted to simply converse, Dove didn't find this weird at all, the elderly man liked to talk and it was often about the weather or his Dear wife Mildred, who he was certain was going to come home one day- she just needed to convince Jesus to send her back to him first. Dove found that sweet and inspiring. She'd entered his villa in the late afternoon and noticed instantly that his persona had changed dramatically- he was normally reclined in his comfy old green sofa chair, today he was sitting in a straight back chair with his arms and legs crossed- an unimpressed look on his face. “How are you Mister Auldron?” she asked pleasantly, not letting him know that she found his new behaviour odd.
“If you find the cure for Dementia will you be truly happy, will your life seem as though it had been fulfilled or will the part of you that you left behind in California wake up and you will realise that you now have an even bigger irreparable void in your being?” He asked, to which Dawn simply rose an eyebrow but said nothing, he was clearly not finished and this speech intrigued her. “Dawn you did what needed to be done, during Zero hour, and you've grown since but you are now stunted. You will progress no further because you are not where you belong, you are not who you are supposed to be and you are not doing what you are destined to..” Dawns brows furrowed he seemed to know so much about her but she had never told him any more that her name in the entirety of their patient to doctor transactions. “You are not supposed to be Doctor Granger, you are supposed to be Dove.”
Dawn had stood abruptly- “I have no clue what you are talking about...” She assured him, the man closed his eyes and rubbed the bridge of his nose as if frustrated, when he opened his eyes he stared directly at her, unblinkingly. “Dawn you can not run from the past forever, it ruins the future- Go home. Go back to him.”
“Who is 'him'?” Dawn asked, curiously. Hank was gone, she'd killed him with her own powers and hands, he wasn't coming back. She rose an eyebrow as the old man shook his head. “You know better than most that we live best when we are ourselves- is that not what drives you to try and help people like me? Because you realise we are not entirely ourselves and this makes us so unhappy?” He questioned, he'd hit the nail on the head- again. “Yet half of you is missing by choice, which is Dove, the other quarter you lost when you lost Hank, that will grow back if you let it. You are reason at its bare entity, you are optimistic and you realise now that you are more than capable of regaining fifty percent of yourself easily. So go, be Dove. It is not your destiny to find this cure, he had something else planned for you... now go, Mildred is home..” Dawn turned and sure enough Mildred walked in in a white night gown announcing that she had been granted by Jesus to return and be with him. Miracles. Dawn had mused as she'd left, they did happen and destiny had a funny way of putting you back on track.
Mister Auldrons words had dug at her all day and night leading her to have left Washington the next day. She'd packed her bags just as she had when leaving Platinum Flats, except she took both her journals with her- she wasn't coming back here... No one would miss her, nor remember her- she had forged no relationships and left little to be remembered for. The only thing that cemented that she had been real was the notes she'd left to her successors with a wish of good luck. She closed the apartment door and left the building, shouldering her bags she was ready to go. In the next instance she was gone, but would still watch to bask in Doctor Green's and Doctor Murphy's success; the people did deserve a better chance at life- she just was not supposed to give it to them through scientific medical means; she was meant to fight for justice and protect them.
She re-entered California early the next morning, her duffel bag over her left shoulder, her shoulder bag over her right. This was it, this was where she was meant to be, though that didn't mean she liked being here. She hadn't wondered the streets like she normally would of, but instead headed straight to her apartment and opened the door. When she entered she noticed that someone had been in here, there were takeaway containers everywhere and someone had been studying her journals at the kitchen table, which was embarrassing but not worth stressing over at the moment- someone was in her home. She set her bags down by the front door and moved through the house silently, apprehensive on who had been here and whether they were still here. She moved down the hallway silently following the sounds of someone breathing heavily- they were in her bedroom. Please don't have fornicated on my bed!
She took a deep breath, calming her nerves- she could handle this. A second later she threw the door open so hard that it lodged itself in the wall behind itself and the hinges popped out of the frame. With the startle affect having been initiated she stepped into the room, expecting a confrontation with a squatter or a teenager, not him! Her whole face dropped and her eyes widened, as if she'd seen a ghost- “You...What are you doing here?!”
