APPEARANCE

APPEARANCE: Daphne is quite petite. She's small and thin, mostly due to malnourishment, but it's been good for business. Her hair is long, wavy, and dark brown, and her eyes are green. She has a few freckles, but they are very fair, like her skin.

Her clothing style consists of whatever she can trade for in the market or find lying around the brothel. There really aren't a lot of choices in her world, so she just takes what she can get, including gifts from clients or her boss, though those don't come often.

She has a few scars from various scrapes over the years, though her most notable in a thin line on the side of her neck where one of the slavers threatened to slit her throat and got a little too close to actually making good on it.

PERSONALITY

PERSONALITY: Having helped raise her sister since the time she was 5, Daphne has a strong bond with her sister that has lasted, even into adulthood. She’s very protective of Astoria, and has done many things to protect her that she never would have otherwise. Her bond also seeps over to the other girls that work in the brothel, and Daphne often takes the more difficult clients just to keep the younger girls from having to deal with the men.

Despite appearing weak and helpless, Daphne is a fighter, and has used her knife on a client more than once in self-defense. There is one thing she’s truly afraid of, however. He boss is a cruel man, and Daphne dares not cross him. She has a streak of bravery in her, though, and occasionally will take punishments for the younger girls to spare them.

Having only been raised in the pureblood world for a short time, Daphne is missing most of the mannerisms she would have learned in other worlds. She’s a little rougher around the edges and confused by fancy and clean things. She and her sister lived in their family’s large home until she was 15, but in that time, it had fallen to disrepair, and living in the brothel is no luxury penthouse. She’s more comfortable in the shabbiness of her world, and while she is enamored by the clean, luxurious life she remembers in small waves, she doesn’t know what she would do in that world, and knows she doesn’t belong.

SPECIAL ABILITIES / TALENTS: She can handle herself with a knife/short sword thanks to a kind client she once had. He took pity on her and showed her how to defend herself in need be.

HISTORY: Daphne Greengrass was born to Amelia and Patrick on a clear day in late February, a small pink baby with dark brown hair. Everything had been set for Daphne, her entire life planned out at birth. She would be tutored and pampered until it was time to go to Hogwarts, there she would meet the perfect man and fall in love and then get married and have lots of babies who would get the same wonderful upbringing as she did.

That all changed when she was five year old. Everyone started getting sick. First her grandparents, then her parents’ friends, then her parents. They called all the healers they could think of, but the ones that came, the ones that were just getting sick themselves, couldn’t figure out what was wrong, and couldn’t stop everyone from dying. Daphne’s father died first, and soon after his funeral, her mother became bedridden, leaving Daphne and her three year old sister, Astoria, to the care of their house elves, as their governess had already passed. Once Amelia took to her bed, she never rose again. It was only days before she was dead herself. Right before she died, however, she called Daphne to her side and made her young daughter promise to protect her little sister. Daphne agreed, and two days later the house elves buried her mother in the backyard.

Daphne’s life was changed forever then. Most of the adults in the world were gone, and it was up to the house elves to raise Daphne and Astoria. They did their best, and while the girls learned to read, write, and do basic math, but their bellies were rarely full after the food in the house ran out. They made do over time, but things were rough, and were only about to get worse.

When Daphne was 15, men came to the house. They were raiders, working in the slave trade, and looking for anyone they could find. Two young girls like Daphne and Astoria were just what they had in mind, as after killing all the house elves, they tossed the two girls in the back of a cart and headed for the city. Daphne was terrified, but more for her sister than for herself. She’d promised her mother she would protect her and she was about to fail! Only one thing could be done to save Astoria. Daphne made a deal with the head raider. For the duration of their journey, she would be his, do whatever he wanted, as long as he made sure her sister was left alone. Lucky for her, the man accepted her deal, and at the cost of her innocence, Astoria was safe, which was all Daphne ever wanted.

When they got to the city, Daphne’s deal truly paid off. The head of the raiding party was friends with the new proprietor of Borgin & Burkes, which was reopening as a brothel named The Fancy Lady. With promises that Astoria once again would not be touched if Daphne gave herself, the two girls went to London to live. They were given as a gift to the raiding leader's friend, since the Goblins that ran the alley were against slavery, and told that if they were ever asked, they were to tell anyone that they chose life in the brothel. The man they were given to wasn’t nearly as nice at the head of the raiding party and is very free with punishment, though he kept his word, leaving Astoria alone in exchange for Daphne’s services.

Life has been fairly stable for the girls since the move to London. They share a room at the Lady and each night Daphne heads to the bar to serve and pick up clients. She doesn’t necessarily enjoy her work at all, but it keeps her and her sister safe, with food and clothing and a roof above their heads. It’s not perfect, but it’s what her life is.

It was on one of these working nights that Daphne went down and was soon approached by a decent looking guy, a trader he said. She didn’t really care about what they did, and after some short flirtation, she was leading him up the stairs when she found herself in a strangely clean room with a stranger staring at her.

THREE RANDOM FACTS

1. Daphne wanted to be a ballerina when she was younger. One of her few belongings is a pair of worn toe shoes she bartered for in the market. They are her prized possession, even if she will never wear them.
2. She learned to cook from the house elves that raised her and her sister. She's fairly good at it, and can do a lot with minimal ingredients and some spices, though those are hard to come by.
3. Daphne has a severe weakness for fresh berries. She has been known to take payment for her services in berries, which she always has to share with her boss, or else.

WHAT ITEMS / OBJECTS OF NOTE DID YOUR CHARACTER HAVE ON THEM WHEN TAKEN? Daphne was walking up the stairs to her room with a client, so she was in her "evening wear," a small stained dress. Her hair is up, with a sharpened chopstick in the bun, and there's a knife strapped to her ankle... just in case.
