BRIEF BACKGROUND SUMMARY: Kate Lockley used to be a detective with the LAPD. She was raised by her widowed father (who was also with the LAPD), he taught her to put her emotions aside and to take care of herself at all costs. Kate meets Angel during a case and the two assist each other. However when Kate finds out that Angel is a vampire she becomes obsessed with the occult. This obsession deepens and becomes dangerous when Kate's father is killed by a vampire (and Kate blames Angel for what happened, which complicates matters because it is obvious she has feelings for him). Eventually Kate is fired from the LAPD due to her mental instability. She calls Angel and blames him for "ruining her life," and then attempts suicide. Angel goes to Kate's apartment and breaks down the door and saves Kate's life by putting her under a cold shower. Although she thanks him she demands he leave her apartment. That same evening she and Angel met again, and Kate tells him she forgives him, saying she believes there has to be a higher power at work since she never invited Angel into her apartment.
