| Bio: | ![]() Ian Gray is, as far as he knows at any rate, 23. He doesn't know who his parents are, having been taken in from the streets by a gang in the West of London. He grew up pick-pocketing, mugging, and occasionally breaking into the posh-houses skirting the Royal Palace at Kew Gardens. He began to specialize in jewellery thefts during his teenage years, both from private houses, jewellery shops and, on one or two special occasions, from jewel cutters workshops. During his miss-spent youth he fell in with Mary Roper, ward of Slater. He didn’t really know his parents; they were probably also deeply involved with the criminal underclasses, and probably abandoned him or were bumped off at some point as his earliest memories are of life in one of the smaller street gangs, and of his mentor, a man who passed away while Ian was still young. Like many street urchins, he was sent on pick-pocketing and shop robbings, little jobs which weeded out those who weren’t naturally gifted or quick learners. Whichever one Ian was, he survived, and managed to learn a more specialised trade- house breaking. At first for anything of value, and then for more unique items, and soon discovered a taste for jewellery. For a few years, Ian tried to get himself onto the straight and narrow (or so he says) by having himself apprenticed to a jeweller. It was interesting, and he made an effort to be as good as he could be, but the strict working hours, the amount of time and thought that was required for each simple cut drove him back onto the streets. He put what he learnt to good use though, only taking those items he could identify as luxurious, and leaving begin suspect jewels of little value behind, although he had been known to steal even low-value items if they’re pretty enough, normally to give as gifts or use as bargaining tools. Currently Ian works independently. He’d not affiliated with any gangs, and works solo, selling on what he steals in pawn shops or to dodgy men in pubs. Perhaps he even sells it to private individuals, should they approach him looking for the ‘perfect gift’. Occasionally he does commission jobs for gangs looking for specific work done, or needing one item in particular recovered from an address. If the price is right, Ian is more than happy to cooperate. As most of his work is done at night and only dark nights too, his days are mostly spent looking for his next job, or at the pub playing cards. He isn’t a fantastic gambler, in fact, a lot of his earnings are lost at the table or at the dog pits, and what’s left goes on rent, food, booze and girls. He’s known to case parties too, to watch in the shadows outside the front door, or peer through windows, trying to find out the names of the ladies with the most impressive jewellery collections. It isn’t hard, after all, to find out which grand residence belongs to which noble, and even less difficult to find an open window or a weak latch and invite oneself in for a private tour. | |||||||||
