In Character BASICS Name: Alastor Winston "Mad-Eye" Moody Age & Birthdate: 39, May 6, 1940 Sexual Orientation: Marital Status: Single Blood Status: Halfblood Wand: 11.5" Hazel and Dragon Heartstring, rigid Current Residence: Currently, an apartment in Diagon Alley. Moves weekly. Tends to rent out rooms in inns, population centers, abandoned homes, or in muggle Britain. Affiliation(s): Order of the Phoenix, Ministry Political Stance: Alastor Moody is going to take a stand here and say that killing people is wrong. In fact, he's gone much further than vocally condemning Death Eaters. Professionally, he has been an auror since 1959 and has been an active antagonist as much as he can to the rise of the conservative purist movement and Lord Voldemort. He came to be an auror after his younger brother disappeared during his teenage years. What began as self hatred has been all but suppressed and channelled, fortunately positively, into an inferno of dedication. This hot fire has smouldered but focused, rather than died out. Alastor Moody is no longer driven by guilt, but stubborn determination. His focus and borderline obsession with his job and safety lead many to think that Alastor Moody is mad. They may not be far off in that assumption. Moody respects human life, and rights. But he is not afraid to temporarily sacrifice the former for the sake of the latter. He is a man of action unafraid to make his opinions known and even less afraid to show those opinions. Alastor Moody thinks the best way to fight evil is to anticipate it, and attack. Moody does not work through influence, and has little patience for sycophants, legistlators, and lawyers who confound the legal process with red tape, paperwork, and technicalities. This means that he often has little patience for his superiors. He has not progressed as far as he has through geniality, but because he has survived as long as he has. It is because of his utmost respect for the law and humanity that Alastor Moody has turned to vigilantism. For Moody, the Order is one of the few things that gives him faith in humanity--something he sorely lacks. He respects everyone who would risk their life for what's right. While he dislikes how many young kids are enlisting, he does respect them as adults as much as any of his trainees. He does not grant special trust to Order members. It must be earned and proven, just as with his trainees as with everyone else. However, it is a point in their favor. He does not see how being an auror and being in the Order are a conflict of interests as both serve the same principles, but if it came down to a question of his own loyalty, Alastor Moody would side with the Order of the Phoenix. SCHOOL & WORK Former House: Gryffindor Years: 1951-1958 Any Extras: Quidditch (Beater 1953-1956) NEWT Scores: Occupation: Auror, Head of Squad 2 Attitude Toward Job: Alastor Moody would marry his job if he could. He takes it incredibly seriously, working long hours, and scarcely going "home" as it is. He keeps many of his personal belongings--changes of clothes, for instance--in his heavily warded, guarded, and locked office if not shrunken and on his person. Long time employees claim they've seen him walking from Ministry bathrooms with a towel on occasion. Moody has been an auror since 1959 and has seen it through the end of every relationship he has attempted to have in his adult life. Ten years ago, Moody made peace with the fact that he would likely never have a successful relationship with a woman. He hasn't dated since. He began training new recruits in 1971, getting his own squad after the death of his own squad leader, the same fight which cost him his eye. Alastor Moody has been an auror for nearly 20 years. In this time, he has lost colleagues, fought and killed Dark Wizards, and suffered significant damage both to himself and to those he considers close. Alastor Moody has an almost paternal guardianship of the Order, particularly its younger members, and his trainees--whether or not this ever gets expressed. The cases he hates the most are the cases dealing with children or these pseudo "family" members, though these are also the cases he seems to seek out. However, he hates the administrative red tape that the Ministry puts on actions that should be natural, just because they are right. He favors the Aurors being allowed to use unforgivables because it evens the playing field. While he has yet to use any on the battlefield, Moody would not hesitate to kill if it saved others. He would most likely refrain from the Cruciatus or Imperius. While he understands the judicial necessity of burden of proof, Moody thinks much grief could be saved if they could just act on the ones they knew. He has been with the order since its inception in 1973 and, after they have proven themselves in fieldwork, is more than willing to guide his recruits to it. Moody takes his work with the Order equally if not more seriously than he takes his job as an Auror, though the two largely overlap. The difference is, he can put more people to work with fewer words and less chance of betrayal in the Order. PERSONALITY Likes: Order, VIGILANCE, The Order of the Phoenix, witches and wizards devoted to doing what's right, Justice when it's served, cruellers, building better wards Dislikes: Bureaucracy, sycophants, laziness, spineless masked cowards, needless violence, weak tea Greatest Fear: That he will miss some hint of something big, costing the lives of innocents, his trainees, or loved ones. Greatest Wish: To have all the young lives lost in this War returned; failing that, to make every last one of these Death Eaters pay for what they've done. General Personality: People call Moody insane. They might not be entirely wrong. What is most noticeable about Alastor Moody are his eccentricities. He takes personal safety extremely seriously, carrying a frontline mindset from the battlefield to his daily life. He does not take drinks or food from others unless he is extremely convinced that only they had a hand in its preparation, this is not a situation where someone would be trying to poison him (most situations are, in fact), and he trusts the entire group completely. Even then, he may turn them down. If he were more callous, he might only eat food he had seen others eat, but he doesn't want to think that he is putting them at risk for his own safety. Moody carries a flask with him and goes shopping in disguise or in Muggle markets. Of late, he has eaten a lot from the Upper Crust Bakery, subconsciously trusting Pettigrew as a fellow Order member with his food--even still, he tends to order randomly. Moody moves around frequently, seldomly connecting to the floo network and wards wherever he goes with dangerous, often questionably legal wards. He secures his office with the same attention, and actually spends the night there from time to time. He encourages the same behavior in his recruits and his Order. He also emphasizes discretion in what one posts on the journals or does in public. Anything, in Moody's eyes, can give the opposite site ammunition. Though, few take him up on his exhortation to CONSTANT VIGILANCE to quite the same extreme. For Moody, trust is to be earned, not given. Moody can count on just over one, increasingly gnarled, hand the people he fully trusts--and even they can expect to be put through the gauntlet when he feels the matter is too important or they may be failing on some moral level. Moody assumes no one is above suspicion. In battle, Moody is far less careful about his own safety, using fiercely aggressive tactics coupled with strong defensive charms to control collateral damage. This does not mean he lets his guard down, but in battle, he is a ferocious opponent whose power and experience speak for themselves. His determination and focus instead function to keep his head level, predatory, and calculating. Moody is the sort who can take devastating damage and still fight, direct people, and assure the safety of anyone caught in the midst. This could be why he is so scarred; he's willed himself through where others may have succumbed to their injuries. Though it may never show, Alastor Moody has a large heart and a deep commitment to what's right. Though he's never been the sort to have a proper family, and his relationship with his own father is irreparably damaged, He views his trainees almost like children. He expects a lot from them, but when the dice are cast, he is there for them. The same extends to the younger members of the Order, though he doesn't outwardly voice it. It almost hurts him more to see them hurt than to have some other body part blasted off himself. He is not, however, a big softie. The more he cares for someone, the more he expects of them. He gets along with many of his colleagues, though friendship has never been his first priority. If he is inclined to humour, it is a self-deprecating gallows humour. That it takes such a level of comfort with a person and a certain level of gaiety, Moody does not joke often. He is easily seen as mirthless, though he does appreciate those who are not. He would also, never admit that, even if he had to hide his smirk while chastising the jokers. Alastor has the tendency to come off as harsh and exacting and is not the warmest conversationalist, a fact that scares many off him. He doesn't do anything to actively dispel any rumors flying around about him, Deep down, Alastor does feel a great sense of loss and guilt, for what happened to his brother, of course, but for all that has happened since then. He feels deaths in his ranks sharply, inwardly chastising himself for something that could have been done more. He worries that some clue was missed, that somehow every action could have been prevented, and often feels that it should have been him rather. Loss of life is one of the few things that can drive Moody to drink, on rare occasion, past his strictly self-imposed three drink maximum. Because of this, Alastor Moody is not a man who likes introspection. The busier he can keep himself, the better. Mortification through battle is another means through which Moody has found he is able to silence that part of his mind. Strengths: Alastor Moody is dedicated, hardy, and vigilant Weaknesses: Alastor Moody is paranoid, stubborn, and gruff. PERSONAL & FAMILY HISTORY Family:
PHYSICAL Portrayed-By: Meat Loaf Height: 5'7 Hair Colour: Brown Eye Colour: Blue Distinguishing Marks / Features: Moody is distinctive for his tics. Moody's on the shorter end of the spectrum, has a terrible posture, made worse since losing his leg. He has a haphazard gait. He often mutters to himself, though in rough, clipped sentences. Moody has numerous scars, facial and otherwise. He is missing his left eye and a good chunk of his nose--replaced by a false eye that can see through illusions and glamers as well as sense magic. It moves about on its own, continually scanning the area and communicating with Moody--even while he sleeps. His left leg was damaged irreparably at the Battle of King's Cross (September 1, 1979) by Antonin Dolohov using a powerful dark spell as well as a silver dagger. His leg has been replaced by a prosthesis and while he has a cane, he hates using it--finding it a more successful cudgel than mechanical aid. Still. he is still growing used to the non-natural leg and can exhaust himself quickly so he does tend to use the cane around the DMLE, particularly later in the day. But for all that Alastor Moody is this strange, damaged man, what is perhaps more distinctive, is the aura of command he exerts. Moody is fully control of the situation, does not lose his head, and expects the same from others. People may whisper about him when he has left the room, but no one, neither his enemies nor closest friends would dare say as much to his face. Other Blurb: With a job dedication bordering on obsession, many say Auror Alastor "Mad-Eye" Moody is insane. They're not entirely wrong. Still, Moody is driven, experienced, and stubborn beyond belief. This Order man will see this War to completion or take out as many as he can on the way down. Plans for your character: I want a white hat :). As to availability to plot, you can certainly try to kill him. But it'll have to be like a five-year-old fight scenario. ♥ Ability Numbers:
