Powers, Abilities, and Weaknesses • • •

Powers: Telepathy. Betsy is a high order telepath, and she can do most everything other telepaths can do. She can read and project thoughts, track people, shadow herself and others, control minds, project mental illusions, and generate psi-bolts that can stun, injure, and possibly kill others by disrupting synapses and neurosystems. She also project onto the astral plane and take others with her. Also, she can leaf through a person's brain to learn their status, condition, or intentions.

After the recent experience and trauma of the death of her S.T.R.I.K.E. partner Tom Lennox, Betsy's powers went a bit wonky, as in almost non-existent. This was an entirely psychological condition. Once she pulled herself back together her "psi-bolts" had evolved and allowed her the use of what she called a psychic knife, which had the same function. Problem is she has to get close enough to her target to use it.

Recently Betsy (after much arm twisting) has taken on the mantle of Captain Britain during the absence of her brother. Using a magically imbued suit, she has the same abilities as her brother (Yet not as skilled in using them since he's had the years of practice).

  • Superhuman Strength
  • Superhuman Stamina - In the costume Betsy can go for about 24 hours of constant physical stress without a build up of fatigue toxins.
  • Superhuman Durability - While wearing the costume, Betsy's body is surrounded by an invisible force field that renders her highly resistant to physical injury. The field allows her to sustain powerful energy blasts, great impact forces such as bazooka shells or being repeatedly struck by superhumanly strong opponents, temperature extremes, and falls from great heights without being injured. However, repeated impacts from sufficiently powerful forces or weaponry will weaken and, eventually, penetrate the field. The field's density, however, is specially designed to allow oxygen and light to pass through it.
  • Superhuman Agility
  • Superhuman Reflexes
  • Superhuman Senses - can purposely draw upon the energies that give her her other powers to temporarily increase the efficiency of her senses, enhancing them to superhuman levels. She can see objects with perfect clarity at much greater distances than a normal human can. Her hearing is similarly enhanced, allowing her to hear further than a human and to detect sounds normal humans can't.
  • Flight - At her peak, she is capable of surpassing the Speed of Sound, 770 miles per hour. The force field that grants her her superhuman durability enables her to withstand the rigors of traveling at such high velocities would have on human tissue without harm, as well as allowing her to breathe normally.
Abilities: Betsy is also a licensed pilot. The joke Brian likes to tell is that she could fly a plane before she learned to drive. It's not true, she just never bothered to get a driver's license until she started working for S.T.R.I.K.E. Also, she knows weapons to an extent as part of the training she went through for her job

Weaknesses: All of the effects of Betsy's telepathy will be lifted if she's ever knocked unconscious. Also, the use of her psi-bolts or psychic knife tend to take a lot of energy, and as a result after using them isn't very proficient at blocking out so called background noise. Betsy also realizes that physically it'd be easy to overpower her in a fight. She works out hard to stop this from happening especially after having been defeated a few times in the past. She utilizes her telepathy to see her opponents next move. She could still be a better fighter.

As with her brother, while as Captain Britain, her powers do not work as well outside of Britain. The suit is like a battery, and as such will lose it's charge, so to speak when not in the British Isles. Since it's the most magical place on the planet simply being there gives it power. She could still use these abilities else wear but they would get weaker and weaker until they diminished.

History • • •

Betsy and her twin brother Brian were born in a small town Maldon, Essex to Lady Elizabeth Braddock and Sir James Braddock. Their older brother Jamie had been born a ten years earlier, and the family settled into Braddock Manor and into a life of privilege. Sir Braddock was one of Great Britain’s leading research scientists, and had been invited by Ned Buckman to join the Hellfire Club. James found this as a great place to fund a lot of his research, but he later left the inner circle when his inventions where being used for anti-mutant purposes. Since the death of both her parents, all the Braddock children inherited membership into the club. Although Betsy never really thinks much about it.

Growing up Betsy had always been extremely close to her twin brother Brian. As they grew and matured Betsy’s extremely adventurous personality also let her draw closer to her elder brother Jamie for a short while. That was until it was made apparent that he wasn't the best influence even if he was her brother and a mutant as well. He had tons in outstanding debts and was getting drawn further and further into the criminal world as he own sanity began to wane.

Betsy discovered her abilities as a teenager. She was a mutant, though at the time she didn’t know it. While Professor Xavier did make one of his recruitment trips, Betsy did not become a student. Though she did keep in close contact with the school and the professor, visiting a few times.

The Braddock children inherited their parent’s intelligence. In her early twenties Betsy’s parents were killed in what was described by authorities as a research accident. At the time Betsy was taking lessons and starting her career as a charter pilot. This didn’t last for long. Her parent’s death affected her deeply, and she was also hoping to do something more worthwhile. A year later she started working for the psi-division at S.T.R.I.K.E. She was known for being the opposite of by the book (yet still pretty brilliant), and she ended up paired with Tom Lennox, who kind of WAS by the books.

The pair was unlikely but they worked well together, eventually dating and falling in love. Not long after deciding to move in together the second major tragedy of Betsy’s life happened. Tom was killed in the line of duty. This would have been a big enough tragedy, but Betsy had been psi-linked to him at the time of his death. The other end of the link just didn’t go silent. She FELT his head in her head as if it was her own, and as if she had been an eye witness to the attack, completely unable to do anything. It left her traumatized. She tried to pretend she was alright, but her rather shoddy field work, and the fact that her abilities had gone off to the shoddy side as well gave she put in for an extended leave of absence.

After sitting around the apartment they shared for awhile, Betsy decided that the best thing for her to do was to try to heal. She traveled a bit, and soon found herself in the United States. After an extended stay at Xavier’s to get her powers back on track and train with them, she decided to return to England. Her travels and stay in Westchester were far longer than the leave of absence she requested. She was settling into the manor (where she was staying until she got a new place) and in the process of getting her old job back, when she was recruited into MI:13 by Alistaire Stuart. She’s not sure if her brother recommended her if they felt they needed a telepath or what, but she thought the change of scenery would be a good thing.

Other Notes • • •

  • Any of this is up for changing if needed. I decided to go with a sort of back to basics betsy, because Mojo eyes, The Hand, Kwannon, Scott seduction, Crimson Dawn, body swaps, and sudden telekinesis that can "shatter mountains", resurrection from a crazy brother. Is really crazy complicated for the setting. Also, I added the bit about Xavier's because even if she's working in England I want her to totally know the X-men or else it's not fun.
  • Betsy's a bit of an adrenaline junkie. She abhors paperwork and is glad she's not a cubicle monkey.
