Occupation: : Freshman in a local university. Works part-time at Gabriel Grey's funeral home.
Sexual Orientation: Straight.
Appearance: Shizuka is relatively short, though she wears heels so often that it's difficult to gauge her actual height. She's thin and pale, with light brown eyes often referred to as "amber" by her artsy friends. Her wardrobe varies wildly depending on her mood, ranging anywhere from exceedingly girly to preppy, and occasionally delving into darker fashions. Her color matching abilities are often questionable, but considering she almost went blind as a child, she'd offered a little leeway. Her hair is a dark red, though it often passes for brown in the right lighting. She is never seen without a small golden pendant and a thin gold bracelet; though she honestly can't remember where she received either, they are both incredibly important to her.
Personality: Shizuka tends to be very cheerful and outgoing, immediately accepting people into her group of friends and extending her trust. This has led to abuse in the past, by friends and significant others alike, but Shizuka never learned her lesson. She is still quick to trust, quick to smile, and quick to believe the best of people.
However, Shizuka has her private side, which she tends to keep...well...private. There are certain events she will not discuss, though she evades the topics well enough that no one ever picks up on how closed-mouthed she can truly be. Instead, she focuses on being accepting and doing everything she can to keep those around her happy, often forcing her own discomfort and unhappiness beneath the surface and putting others first.
She also tends to be rather quiet, and often fades into the background and is easily overlooked. She is surprisingly dependent on those around her, especially her brother; friends often say her world revolves around him.
History: Shizuka and her brother grew up in a damaged, and eventually broken, household. With a drunken father and nervous mother, the violence eventually got too much, and Shizuka was whisked away by her mother, leaving her brother to deal with the drunken rages on his own. Their mother apparently actively kept the two of them apart, though it’s never explained why; it could be because she thought he would turn out like his father, or that they simply did not get along, or she thought the siblings were TOO close. There is plenty of speculation but no solid answers. However, Shizuka refuses to discuss what occurred during the time period they still remained a family.
Several years later, Shizuka’s eyesight began to fail her, and it became evident that the only way to save it was an expensive procedure that they could not afford. Sending a video greeting to her brother, she told him about it, and said that she missed him. Jou then embarked on a Dueling Tournament to win her the money for the surgery. However, the day of the surgery, he was waylaid by thugs and was late. Shizuka steadfastly refused to go through with the surgery without her big brother there, locking herself in her hospital room until he showed up. Only then did she have the courage to go through with it. Afterwards, too frightened to take off the bandages covering her eyes, it was only in a time when her brother was in mortal danger that she found the courage to do so.
Deviating from canon...
The next few years were absolutely bliss to Shizuka, since her mother allowed her to remain in the city with her brother. However, these memories are no longer hers anymore, though occasionally she glimpses them in bits and pieces, mostly in her dreams. She never questioned her sudden relocation, or the friends surrounding her, or the oddly familiar faces here and there. She still grows cold with dread when questioned about her childhood, though she can no longer explain why. Her doctor insists it's from watching too many horror movies, but sometimes, she wonders...
In-Game History: In-Game History: Shizuka has led a somewhat privileged but normal life. Her father is a surgeon and her mother a nurse, so there are periods of time where she never gets to see her family. While most kids would have screamed abandonment, Shizuka skillfully convinced herself that her parents were simply working very hard in order to provide her with all the opportunities they could. After all, she doesn’t need to pay rent, or for her own education, or even for groceries unless there’s something she really wants and it’s not already in the house. She tries to make up for it by keeping the house as clean as possible, and supporting her parents in their work, but sometimes, she does feel lonely, and she does wonder if perhaps her parents are deliberately spending as little time with her as possible.
She has always been a decent, if dedicated, student. She does her best work when she is allowed one-on-one time with a teacher to handle things she isn’t quite grasping. She desperately wants to get good grades to impress her parents, but though they want her to follow in their footsteps and go to medical school, she has neither the interest nor the skills to make it through the required courses. Instead, oddly enough, she’s bound and determined to become a veterinarian. Or maybe just a housewife with lots of kids. She can’t seem to make up her mind.
She grew up next door to Mokuba Kaiba, until a few years ago when her parents decided to move into a larger house that offered more privacy and garage space. They remain friends to this day, very close, and Mokuba is one of the people she trusts explicitly. She isn’t quite sure what threw them together, since they don’t have much in common, but perhaps it was just childhood curiosity and the convenience of having a playmate right next door.
