Faced with the fact that she was inconsequential in her own home Cassie began to take charge of her own happiness, or rather lack there of. She stopped eating, slowly at first, soon she discovered easier ways to hide her eating disorder, but it’s not enough for her and soon Cassie gives up on everything, attempting to commit suicide. In the hospital she cooperated as best she could, eating enough to let the doctor’s believe she was getting better, always putting on a sunny demeanor, she relished in the power she had over them.
Upon her return her friend Michelle invited her to a party, asking Cassie to take the virginity of of her boyfriend Tony’s best friend Sid. Over the course of the party she grew quite fond of Sid, but before she could follow through on her promise she overdosed on drugs and had to be rushed to the hospital. She regained consciousness before being admitted, and she and her friends never again spoke of the incident.
Cassie found herself smitten with Sid, a sentiment she was sure he shared, but it was merely a delusion, as Sid was madly in love with Michelle. After much heartbreak Cassie left to live in Elgin in hopes she would be happier there. She was. She and Sid started a long distance relationship and she was happier than she’d ever been, but after she returned home things had changed. Due to some miscommunication Sid was left believing Cassie had had an affair and slept with Michelle at her birthday party. Cassie was devestated. She began growing and selling pot, it was the easiest way for her to make money for other drugs, it also allowed her to meet more people, people she could have anonymous sex with, in hopes that Sid would get jealous and come to his senses.
Sid apologized for all he’d done and Cassie took him back, though things were never as good the second time around. Constantly compared to Michelle, holding so many secrets, Cassie finally reached herbreaking point when friend and roommate Chris dies right before her eyes. Unable to decide what to do next she flees to New York. There she is cared for by a kind young man around her age, until something about her sends him packing, leaving Cassie alone, again.
