Relevant backstory:
Peter grew up sure he would end up living the life of an accountant, it was his goal as he went to college and earned himself top marks in all his classes. What he hadn't expected was to have anyone take an interest in him, but a recruiter for the FBI did just that and changed his life forever.
Instead of a life filled with numbers and tax returns, Peter put his determination and steadfast desire to do things the right way to work for the FBI and through perseverance and long hours put in on cases over the years he worked his way up the totem pole to become a senior agent in the White Collar Crimes division.
Along the way, Peter met Elizabeth, and after he had her checked out (he had to make sure she wasn't dating anyone), he asked her out to dinner - and things simply fell into place after that. The two complemented each other perfectly and Peter couldn't have imagined a life that did not include Elizabeth in it - he often uses her as a sounding board for some of his more difficult cases, and Elizabeth always brought her unique insight to the discussion, forcing Peter to see things in a way he never would have considered otherwise.
Peter is most well known for his apprehension of Neal Caffrey, not just once but twice. It was after the second capture that Neal suggested to Peter a plan that would include releasing Caffrey from prison into the custody of the FBI to assist on other White Collar cases, and though he didn't trust Caffrey completely in the beginning even Peter couldn't deny that the other man's knowledge would be a great help to him. It took time, and Neal slipped up quite a bit during the short time they worked together, but Peter has grown to trust Neal and even care for him.
The situation with Kate and her subsequent murder have thrown a wrench into the otherwise very smooth sailing relationship Peter has been able to form with Neal and every day has it's own tests, but Peter is doing what he can to watch out for Neal and help him find the answers he deserves. All while balancing his own career and his relationship with Elizabeth which is changing even more now with the sudden take off of her business.
To put it simply, life is constantly changing for Peter Burke and he's just trying to keep everything afloat as best he can.
