septima vector THE PLAYER Name: Dex Age: 25 Contact: email preferred: dexslytherin@gmail.com RPG Experience: about a year’s worth; someday I will make a cdj.
THE CHARACTER FULL NAME: Septima Vector BIRTHDAY: November 16th (age: 32) PLACE OF BIRTH: Leeds, West Yorkshire, England. There has been a small, hidden pureblood population of wizards in Leeds since the Middle Ages. SEXUAL ORIENTATION: Straight. BLOOD STATUS: Pureblood THOUGHTS ON BLOOD PURITY/MUGGLES: Septima doesn’t believe that a person’s blood has anything to do with who they are or what they are capable of. She judges people by what they are capable of, not by the blood in their veins. She’s met just as many stupid purebloods as intelligent Muggleborns. As for Muggles, she doesn’t quite understand them, as she grew up in a pureblood household, and didn’t interact with Muggles. She thinks some of their things are neat, like their fashion designers, but stuff like electricity she doesn’t get.
HOUSE AND YEAR: Ravenclaw alum. WAND: Pine, phoenix feather, unyielding, 8 inches. Septima is left handed, for both wanding and writing. Ω Pine: The straight-grained pine wand always chooses an independent, individual master who may be perceived as a loner, intriguing and perhaps mysterious. The pine wand is one of those that is most sensitive to non-verbal magic. Ω Phoenix feather: Phoenix feather wands are always the pickiest when it comes to potential owners, for the creature from which they are taken is one of the most independent and detached in the world. These wands are the hardest to tame and to personalise, and their allegiance is usually hard won. information from Pottermore, because I like their descriptions of wand woods. BOGGART: A clown. She absolutely detests the foul things. PATRONUS: A Welsh Corgi. Septima had one as a child, and if she needed to conjure a Patronus, it would come from memories of her dog Helios. Playing with him was one of her ways to unwind as a child. POSITION: Arithmancy Professor
PERSONALITY: In one word, Septima is a perfectionist. Other words that would sum up her personality include: independent, strong-minded, and loner. She knows who she is, what she likes, and what she wants to do, and she doesn’t let anyone else talk her out of something. A great example of this is her mother, who for years has been trying to get her to marry, because Callidora wants grand-children. The closest Septima is willing to come to that is being a professor at Hogwarts -- she doesn’t particularly like children, but she does enjoy the challenges of teaching. And as she teaches an elective subject, she usually has students that want to take her subject, which is something she prefers.
Septima has a passing acquaintance with the other professors. There isn’t really anyone she would call a friend -- she is very particular about her use of the word, and she is absolutely fine with that. She tends to stay in her office and quarters except when she must attend staff meetings or functions; holiday feasts are some of her least favorite events, because she’s usually needed to help keep an eye on the students.
As a loner, she hasn’t had very many romantic relationships either, but that’s not something she cares much about. People and emotions are too flighty for her, and she generally prefers her own company over that of others. And after her mother set her up on one too many blind-dates (or the wizarding equivalent), she swore off dating.
Septima’s idea of a perfect day is to spend it in her office, getting the mundane tasks of marking papers and owling professional colleagues (and sometimes interfering parents) out of the way as quickly as possible. Then she’ll curl up on her couch in front of the fire and read, either from the latest Arithmancy journal or a contemporary novel. She has a fondness for Muggle literature, and sees it as a way to understand a culture she doesn’t know much about.
As befits a Ravenclaw, Septima is highly inquisitive and likes to learn new things, no matter what the subject matter. Well -- Divination excluded, of course, since she thinks that “subject” is absolute rubbish. Numbers are the only sure way to learn anything about the future. Tea leaves in cups don’t reveal anything significant other than what sort of tea you like.
Now, Septima isn’t super serious all the time. She tends to be around others, but in the privacy of her own rooms, or with people she is truly comfortable with (these people are rare, however), she can let loose a little and laugh about things. She has been thinking about getting a dog, like the Welsh Corgi she had when she was younger. Although students aren’t allowed to have dogs, she could have one as a staff member.
STRENGTHS: Analytical mind, determined, independent, detail-oriented, strong with numbers. WEAKNESSES: While her analytical mind is a strength, it can also be a weakness, as sometimes she over-thinks situations. Septima also has a difficult time socializing with others, as she doesn’t particularly enjoy small talk or wasting time. If Septima doesn’t find something interesting, like Divination, she tends to become very close-minded about the subject. LIKES: reading Arithmancy journals, sleeping in, Muggle literature, the color grey, dogs, shopping, chocolate mousse. DISLIKES: rain, mud, cleaning, ironing, the colors yellow and pink, Divination, sports. PERSONAL GOALS: Septima has already achieved her personal goal of having a career she enjoys. She has no interest in moving up the hierarchy at Hogwarts -- she definitely doesn’t want to be headmistress or anything like that. Once she tires of teaching, though, she has thought about becoming a researcher, and already writes articles for some of the journals she reads. She thinks it would be a relaxing hobby once she retires.
PARENTS: Ω Septimus Vector (father, deceased) Ω Callidora Vector née Jones (mother) THEIR RELATIONSHIP: Septima’s father is deceased and she does miss him, as he instilled a love of numbers in her at an early age, and she always felt he understood her better than her mother. Her relationship with her mother is so-so -- they owl each other every month, and maybe have lunch on Hogsmeade or London every few months. Septima keeps her distance from Callidora, as she is tired of her mother’s attempts to interfere in her life. SIBLINGS: Septimus Vector II, died at one month. FAMILY DYNAMICS: As her only sibling died when he was a month old, Septima never knew him, so there are no interactions there.
PERSONAL HISTORY: Septimus and Callidora Vector planned to have two children, a boy and a girl. The boy was born a year into their marriage and they named him Septimus II, after his father. But only a month later, Septimus died from an unknown cause. Heartbroken, Callidora refused to try again, needing time to recover from the loss of her firstborn.
Eventually, though, the couple moved on, and Septima was born. When the baby girl survived her first month, and then first year, Callidora was overjoyed. She and her husband decided not to have any more children, satisfied with their one daughter, and both had high hopes for her.
Septima grew up to be a quiet, studious child. Both of her parents were former Ravenclaws, so it was natural for the little girl to pick things up quickly and want to learn more from an early age. Her parents expected it of her, too -- Callidora tutored her as soon as she could understand things. One of Septima’s favorite places as a child was her father’s study, because it was full of books and her daddy always had interesting papers to look at. Septimus worked at Gringotts, in their investing department, and he influenced his daughter’s love of numbers.
The family lived in Leeds, in an area where witches and wizards (mostly purebloods) had lived since the Middle Ages. Although the area was somewhat isolated, her parents weren’t pureblood supremacists or anything of the sort, and Septima was never prejudiced towards Muggles or Muggleborns. They just weren’t something she knew much about, because she didn’t have the chance to interact with them until going to school.
Her parents never talked much about their first child, but her brother’s death influenced Septima’s life. As early back as eight or nine years old, she remembers feeling the pressure of her parents wanting her to succeed and to have a good life. She didn’t mind -- she was the type of kid who liked reading books and playing word games with mum and doing number puzzles with daddy. When she went to Hogwarts, the Sorting Hat instantly placed her in Ravenclaw, recognizing her thirst for knowledge and drive to be successful.
In Ravenclaw, Septima met others like herself, and she passed a very enjoyable seven years at Hogwarts. There isn’t much to say about her school years, other that unlike most of her classmates, she never got much into Quidditch, and never went to matches. In her third year, she picked up Arithmancy and promptly fell in love with the subject. She tutored some others in the joint class (Hufflepuffs), and there discovered that she had a knack for teaching others. It wasn’t something she had expected to enjoy, but it put the idea of being a professor into her head. She dated a bit, but quickly got over the silly “love” affairs her fellow students (to her horror, not even Ravenclaws were immune) from fourth year and up.
After finishing at Hogwarts (with seven N.E.W.T.s: Arithmancy, Ancient Runes, History of Magic, Transfiguration, Charms, Potions, and Defense Against the Dark Arts), Septima took an entry-level position at Gringotts. She stayed there for about a few years, working in the investing department, where she kept track of gold conversion rates in various countries. (The goblins liked to increase the stockpile of gold, so they would pursue carefully selected opportunities.) It was an okay job but not a brilliant one, and Septima could see that the goblins preferred to work with their own kind instead of humans. She started putting out feelers for other opportunities, and when the chance to apprentice at Hogwarts with her former Arithmancy professor came up (Professor Ambrose was ready to retire after fifty years), she took it.
One other thing influenced her decision to change fields. When she was twenty, her father passed away. Working of Gringotts reminded him of her, and she also saw his death as an impetus to improve her life. If she had stayed at Gringotts, it would have taken her several years to move up, and she believed that being a professor would give her more opportunities. Plus it was something she loved: Arithmancy. She has been the Arithmancy professor for seven years.
Septima’s style as a teacher is to be strict and somewhat distant towards her students, but she is more than willing to help those who need it, provided that they ask. Unlike many other Hogwarts professors who must deal with teaching every student, including those who aren’t interested in a subject, she teaches an optional course, so she has somewhat of a guarantee that those in her class are actually interested in the subject. That isn’t always the case, because sometimes friends take the same subject so they have someone to talk to, so the first year of Arithmancy is a heavy one, with a full load of homework, to weed out those who don’t want to be there.
APPEARANCE: Septima is 5’7”, slim in build, with shoulder-length dark, dark brown hair and dark blue eyes. Her skin is usually pale as she doesn’t like to go outdoors, and she has a tendency to wear more eye makeup charms than other female professors. It’s one of the few ways she expresses herself. While teaching, she wears robes, but she has never really liked them, so on off times, she prefers to be in something else more comfortable. Only when in private, though -- she wouldn’t want to ruin her image.
Septima doesn’t have many nervous habits, as she doesn’t like them, but she is prone to fiddling with her quill when trying to write an article, or doodling on spare parchment when she’s sick of wading through rubbish essays. PB: Eva Green (examples of icons I'd upload if accepted)
THE ROLE First person roleplaying sample: [Private to Self] Another new year, another crop of third years. I never look forward to the start of a school year, because I know the new students will whine incessantly about the amount of homework I assign. It’s for their own good, though, as it’s the best way of telling if they really want to take my subject or not. [/Private]
If there are any new Arithmancy students who have already changed their minds, please talk to me at the soonest opportunity, so that we can move you to a different course.
Third person roleplaying sample: Septima looked up from her desk and sighed. Instead of working on the project she had assigned, several of her students were using the opportunity to talk to each other, and not about Arithmancy. It wasn't as if she hadn't expected this — indeed, that was why she set the project in the first place. It was always a good way to tell what students were taking the class to be with their friends, and which students were actually interested in the subject. She didn't play favorites, not really, but she did like to encourage those students.
"If you don't finish this assignment in class, I will expect you to finish it for Wednesday, and there will be an additional scroll of parchment due on the properties of the number three." She smiled inwardly at the groans and flicked her wand at the clock. "However, there are thirty five minutes left, which should be plenty of time to finish."
She returned her attention to her papers, marking the homework she had collected at the beginning of class. Just two more groups of students to get through today, and then she could return to the solace of her office. The first few weeks of a term were always the worst, with the students not used to being in the routine of classes and homework, and with the third years starting their new subjects. Before long it would get better though, and she would be able to relax a little bit.
The next thirty five minutes passed much more quietly, with the students actually completing their work. The promise of extra homework was one that almost always made them cooperate, and she had learned that early in her teaching career.
At the end of class, she waved her wand and Summoned all of the parchments to her desk. "Don't forget, three feet on the number three due next class."
Plot Ideas/Pairings/etc...: I don’t have any ideas offhand. I’ll be sure to share if I do get any once the game gets underway.
