It is delightful to hear that Harry's heightened self-awareness seemed in-character to you. I felt it necessary to show how death might have changed him, and also to give him some of the introspection that Snape, reeling at still being alive, disoriented, has been avoiding. You understood my reasons for Snape's meanness quite perfectly--I felt that he would be even more vulnerable now, and therefore seek ways to push that, and its embodiment in Harry, as far away as possible.
Yes, in hindsight I must agree that the scene in the rain isn't particularly well-motivated. I was so intent on bringing together coldness and warmth, fire and water that the practicalities of the situation evaded me... :/
