:: Background

Daphne is a naiad, a kind of water nymph associated with springs and fountains. She is possibly the daughter of river god Peneus or Ladon. Not much is written about her beyond the main myth she appears in, though she is occasionally metntioned as a friend or follower of Artemis.

In the main myth, due to a cursed arrow from Eros, she is the object of infatuation of Apollo. He chased her unceasingly and against her will. Even though Apollo said he didn't want to hurt her, Daphne was not interested in his attention at all. It is said when Apollo caught her and was about to kiss her, she pleaded with her father for help and she was transformed into the Laurel Tree. And since Apollo wasn't really going to just shag a tree, he gave up. Mostly. Every four years at the games, he gave out a wrath of laurel to the winners. Awww.

Daphne is the subject of many paintings and poems, and thus she found herself alive and untreed in England during the Victoria era when a fascination for Greek and Roman mythology grew strong enough for belief to resurrect her. Since then she has just gotten on with things, really. She's a fairly practical sort and she just wants to live her life.

She's been in the US since the 60s, travelling around and living in different places. She's settled in New York because of the vastness allowing for her to sort of disappear. Hard to catch the attention of men if you can fade into the crowd, right? She also has a cabin up north where she disappears to when she misses the forest too much. While in the city, she owns and partly runs a little nursery/garden shop.

:: Personality

Daphne is pretty logical and in control. One would have to be, to be glad of being turned into a tree. Surely there could have been other ways to save her, but she doesn't mind. She accepts her life, making the best of it.

She's a kind person, and really enjoys the company of others. She has a few close friends, though most of them are either women or non-binary. She doesn't trust men quite so much.

And thus, Daphne is a fierce feminist. She attends rallies and is an outspoken supporter of Me Too. She wore a pussy hat and marched in 2016. She volunteers at a women's shelter, because she knows what it's like to be followed and stalked and pursued without ceasing. She has no less than seven feminist tattoos. Unfortunately she can sometimes be a little transphobic in her thinking. She is fine with trans people existing and she would fully support their rights, except she also agrees that women deserve their own space and if transwomen are allowed in that just opens up the possibility for men to use that an an excuse and invade women only spaces.

She is teachable though, and willing to learn and change.
