Powers and Abilities
Powers or Ability: Lucien does not have a Gift. He does, however, have Chromesthesia, a form of synesthesia that allows him to effectively see music as light and colours. He is a talented musician, having played the piano from a young age, as well as dabbling with most any other instrument he would want to be used in his music.
Extent of Powers or Ability: The condition is not triggered by all sound, and only comes into effect when he hears music / singing. Because of his ability to see music as well as hear it, he has perfect pitch, which allows him to detect notes and keys with an accuracy most cannot manage.
Personality
Strengths:
Confident- he is secure in himself without being arrogant. He knows he is attractive and talented, but this doesn't translate into arrogance. More just a generally outgoing nature because he isn't plagued with self doubt.
Friendly- that self security means Lucien has no drive to cut others down in order to make himself look better. He isn't threatened by the talent of others, and would rather build them up to greater heights - he enjoys being surrounded by greatness.
Creative- the nature of his job means that creativity is a must - the chromesthesia certainly helps when composing music, but seeing colours / sounds blend well together is pretty much the aftereffect of his creative process. He dreams up the music and the aurora that follows is his reward for a job well done.
Weaknesses:
Intransigent- Whilst Lucien is very open and accepting of people and ideas in everyday life, he has been known to be difficult to work with. Not always - a lot of his collaborations are beautiful things - but when there is a clash of creative ideas, he is unaccepting of the possibility that someone else might have a better approach than him.
Bystander- Although it isn't exactly correct to say that he runs away from his problems, he doesn't exactly confront them head on either. Whilst living in Clovenne, he accepted that the blatant homophobia was just 'how things were' and although it didn't stop him from engaging in supposedly indecent liasons, he felt that living his life under the cover of darkness was the only option open to him. His eyes were opened upon travelling to Castyll, but even there he still avoids tackling issues he knows to be wrong. He finds Faidoux abhorrent, and though he disagrees with its use on anyone, he has never been overcome with the urge to actually do something about it.
Free spirited- The trait sounds good to begin with, but tying Lucien down to anything proves to be as easy as hearding cats. He will travel where he wants to, when he wants to, and has left more than one broken heart in his wake. It is never his intention to hurt anyone, but he is not the sort to remain in one place for long, and consequently one must think long and hard on the risk of coming to rely on Lucien.
History
Birthplace: Clovenne, in a small city to the north of Belailles
Social Class: Upper middle. Well educated but the family is neither super rich nor super influential
Occupation:Composer. In demand with vocal artists, but prefers to mostly compose classical, blues and jazz pieces.
Brief Summary:
His chromesthesia was mistaken for a power when he was a young boy, and was a source of disappointment for his parents when it became apparent that he was not, in fact, Gifted. The household is loving enough, but there is no shaking the cultural desire for Gifted children.
Good looks and not coming from a poor background mean Lucien does not have a difficult childhood. It is far from idyllic, there are ever present reminders that the Gifted children are special and better, but he is not cut off from all opportunity. He does well in school, but has no interest in the harder subjects, favouring music first and foremost. Though it is part of the curriculum and he becomes an accomplished pianist, there is no expectation that he would go down that path when there are other more respectable avenues open to him.
There is a heavy weight of expectation in Clovenne to be a certain way, and having grown up in that environment, Lucien did not realise how oppressive it was for a long time. He played his part; charming girls at dances but acting like a perfect gentleman by never luring them into his bed, then seeking the company of other men when all eyes were turned elsewhere.
Disregarding the urgings of his parents and teachers, he continues to pursue music as a career path after creche. The job does not provide much monetary incentive in the begining, but it does open up doors to new places and new people.
In his mid-twenties, Lucien is invited to work with an Aurellian musician in Castyll. The Pink City is like a breath of fresh air for him, and the freedom to truly be himself proves too good to give up. It isn't long before he emigrates, and his work becomes of noticeably higher quality in a setting where he isn't stiffling such a major part of himself.
