Durmstrang Castle is hidden in a valley surrounded by snow capped Mountains. The Institute sits on the Russian Kola Peninsula. The Kola Peninsula is located in the far Northwestern corner of the country within the Arctic Circle. The peninsula is surrounded by the Barents Sea to the North and the White Sea to the East, Southeast and on the Western side it borders Finland and a small sliver of Norway. There are many lakes and rivers that run through the peninsula. The Mountains and cold temperatures keep the Castle well hidden, along with quite a few magical safe-proofs. While the castle itself is smaller than Hogwarts' castle, the school grounds are vast. There is a large divided greenhouse, a lake and a Quidditch Pitch similar to the one at Hogwarts. There are plenty of outdoor courtyards with paths for the students to enjoy. The school does have one Tower that is not connected to the main building. This is the Dungeon Tower. It is called this because the only thing the tower actually has above ground is a long winding staircase which leads up to an observatory and down to the dungeons. In these dungeons there are a few special chambers that resemble cells. The students don't often venture down there because for one reason or another they are repelled from the area.
...History & Interior;
The Castle has only three floors to it. There are several secret passages but the staircases are all normal. There are no moving staircases at Durmstrang. Highmaster Erman Hrothric, the Slavic Wizard who founded the biased school, would have considered that a gimmick. He did not care for gimmicks or anything that he considered a waste of time. So while other schools such as Hogwarts and Beauxbatons offered Divinations, Hrothric would have nothing to do with it. The Great Hall at Durmstrang also serves as the school’s Dining hall. It is a big room with a high vaulted ceiling. The Highmaster commands an elevated table for the professors like the one at Hogwarts. The students sit at various tables that litter the room. There are smaller round tables that can sit six students, while the rest are rectangular tables that can sit anywhere from 12-16 people. Students have the freedom to sit with whomever they like, but this also suggests that the school has a much higher level of separation than just the simple rivalry that exists at Hogwarts between houses. If you ask previous Highmaster Igor Karkaroff he would tell you that Durmstrang was using House Elves for food preparation long before Hogwarts had, but this is simply untrue. Highmaster Ivan Petrovitch actually stole the idea from Hogwarts after he was there for a Triwizard Tournament hosted by Hogwarts in 1308. The Four Houses of the school reside in each of the four corners of the main building. Students have passwords to enter their House commonrooms but the entrances are not hidden as they are at Hogwarts. All House commonroom entrances are on the third floor of the castle and house dormitories fill in the towers for Perun and Stribog and two upper sectioned floors for Jarilo and Svetobor. These higher floors are only accessible to students of that House through their commonroom.
...Uniform; | |||||||||||||||||
The Uniforms differ greatly from school to school, though Beauxbatons definitely has the most unique variation. The boys and girls have choices with their uniform. They are provided with a school uniform of the traditional pale blue color that signifies the school on a whole as well as a house uniform. The girls uniforms can be seen here. The boys have the same colors available but they just have slate-grey lightweight slacks and colored button up shirts. Beauxbatons students are notorious for accessorizing. Durmstrang however has a more complicated uniform because of the region the school is located in. Every student receives a long heavy red coat with fur trim. The red is a deep crimson, signifying the School color. Each House has a seal which is embroidered into the coats on the left chest. Underneath (or when a student is not wearing the coat) the students have grey turtleneck sweaters that also have their seals embroidered on them as well as their black robes. The boys have black slacks and the girls have black skirts and black stockings. The stockings vary between a lightweight material for warmer days to wool for the cold winter days. Most Durmstrang students also own a turtleneck sweater with the emblem of the school spread proudly across the front of the shirt. The Beauxbatons students would consider these uniforms very dull. ...CREDIT;
