BRUCE

Waking up is harder than it seems
Wandering through these empty rooms of dusty books and quiet dreams.
Pictures on the mantle,
speak your name.
Softly like forgotten tunes,
just outside the sound of pain.

FULL NAME: Bruce Wayne
NICKNAMES: The Dark Knight; the Caped Crusader; Bats
CURRENT AGE: 36
DOB: Feb 19th, 1974
PLACE OF BIRTH: Gotham City

MARITAL STATUS: Single
SEXUALITY: Heterosexual
OCCUPATION: CEO/Majority shareholder, Wayne Enterprises
CURRENT RESIDENCE: Wayne Manor, Gotham City, New Jersey

PARENTS: Thomas and Martha Wayne (deceased)
SIBLINGS: None (though some have claimed otherwise)

IDENTITY: Secret

RANDOM FACTS

• Bruce finds his work with the Wayne Foundation to be among his most fulfilling, though he finds it difficult to stomach the society events and hobnobbing it requires.

• Although to an outsider it may appear that Batman simply targets any criminal he comes across on any given night, he actually has an extremely complex system of algorithms and computer models he uses to analyze Gotham's underworld. Every action he takes against a criminal organization is thought out ten steps ahead of time, and the results are catalogued and analyzed intesively.

• Politically, Bruce is difficult to pin down. On the one hand, he's only ever supported politicians who meet his extremely high ethical standards, and donates hundreds of millions of dollars to environmental, civil rights, mental health, and related progressive charities. On the other hand, many see the extreme actions of Batman as those of a borderline fascist- one who has inspired many other violent vigilantes to rise up and take the law into their own hands. Add to that he routinely violates the privacy rights of citizens by hacking their financial, medical, and criminal records, and planting hidden surveillance cameras across Gotham. Though these actions ultimately save lives, they still pose serious ethical implications- ones which his allies have brought up on more than one occasion.

• Although many see Batman as a lone man standing against evil, every step of his journey to becoming the Dark Knight was lined with allies. Following his first disastrous attempt at vigilantism, Bruce was bleeding out in his living room, and only after seeing a bat smash through the window did he fixate on taking up it's mantle. His first act as Batman? To admit he needed help, and call out to Alfred for help. Since then, there have been dozens who have joined Batman in his war on crime - a few as fellow soldiers, but many more as supporters, spies, technical advisers, or advocates. Batman's success is not predicated solely on his brilliance or skills with his fists, but also on the actions taken by those like Lucius Fox, Dr. Leslie Thompkins, Alfred Pennyworth, Vicki Vale, James Gordon, the police of the Gotham MCU, and many many others.

"It's not who I am underneath, but

what I do, that defines me..."

The story of Bruce Wayne's life is a story which has become near myth. A tale which has come to encapsulate so many aspects of the human condition. Tragedy. Loss. Rage. Discipline. Redemption. Triumph. It has become a beacon to those who follow him, an example of the potential for the human spirit to overcome any loss and make meaning out of horror.

Born into privilege as the only son of Thomas and Martha Wayne, Bruce's life began idyllically. He wanted for nothing, and was showered with love. Even as a young child, his intellect and athleticism were plain to see, and he was courted by prestigious private schools and athletics programs. It seemed anything might have been possible for Bruce Wayne. But those possibilities were destroyed in a pair of gunshots and a rain of scattered pearls. Leaving a theater late one night, Thomas and Martha were gunned down before Bruce's eyes by a small time thug named Joe Chill.

Bruce would remember little of the days that followed. He was found by Police, comforted by a young Officer Jim Gordon, then summarily told that his new guardian would be his family's butler Alfred. Bruce was borderline catatonic for months, wrapped up in his own depression and rage. Alfred took Bruce to a number of specialists, and Bruce's depression lessened over time- at least on the surface- and he managed to become functional once again. Though he continued to display extreme intelligence and athletic dominance, he was expelled from a number of boarding schools in his teenage years. Bruce had begun to develop a certain sense of moral certainty along with the cold rage burning inside him. When confronted with injustice, he took whatever steps he deemed were necessary- with no thought for the consequences. He frequently clashed with the ingrained system of private school hazing, whose brutal practices were routinely inflicted on lower-classmen. Bruce was expelled on three separate occasions for brutally defending his classmates from such barbaric behavior. He made few friends during his teenage years, though he did form a few romantic connections.

By the time he graduated High School, an idea had begun to crystalize in his mind. A concept. Of a man standing up for justice no matter the cost. He had no idea how he would achieve his goal, or what form it would take, but Bruce knew it was what he had to do. And so began the infamous 7 year period of Bruce Wayne's life, where he went abroad. Earning degrees in a variety of fields during the day, Bruce immersed himself in training at night. His travels took him across the globe- from Paris, to London, to Hong Kong, Nairobi, Morocco, Tokyo, and beyond. He visited villages with no names, and travelled the wild on every continent. Along the way, he sought out experts in every field and martial art he felt he might need, and learned all they had to teach. He had numerous adventures along the way, creating friendships and lifelong enmities as he went. And all the while, the idea of what he had to do solidifed in his mind.

Returning to Gotham, Bruce assumed control of his family's company, and set about beginning his calling. He would be a vigilante by night, who would wage war on the same criminals who took his parents from him. His start was to be a rough one- ending with him on the verge of death in his living room, bleeding from a half dozen wounds. Then, a creature appeared, smashing through the glass window and landing in front of him. Perhaps a hallucination, or perhaps real- the one thing Bruce had feared since his childhood, whose visage had appeared in meditation and visions across the world during his training- a Bat. And so, Bruce would become what he feared, and harness it's mantle for his own purposes. The Batman was born.

In the intervening years, Batman has had many adventures, and his one man war on crime has blossomed into a crusade. Dick Grayson, Jason Todd, Tim Drake, Barbara Gordon and others have joined Batman in his war. Bruce finds himself surrounded by a surrogate family who share his ideals and commitment to justice. And he found himself joining forces with other heroes in what would one day become the Justice League. But although he has made many friends and allies, Batman has made just as many enemies. Brutal creatures like Penguin, the Riddler, Poison Ivy, and of course... the Joker. The wheel turns, and as old threats are overcome, new ones rise in their place, more powerful and savage than ever before. There have been setbacks- Jason Todd was murdered, Dick Grayson left to become his own hero, and Batman's back was broken by Bane- but Batman will not waver. He will not stop. He will not give up. He will not fail. He is the Batman, and all who seek to harm the innocent will fear him.

PERSONALITY

Bruce Wayne has managed to build himself a strange semblance of a life out of the ruins of his parents death, including a family- of sorts. There are the obvious observations to make about him. He’s intense. Driven to the point of obsessive. Sharply perceptive. Unrelenting. Cold to the verge of cruelty.

Then there are those in the outer ring of Bruce’s true self. Justice League teammates, other heroes he has fought alongside. They encounter a man who demands the most from himself and others, but does so from a place of belief. He knows what he’s capable of, and he knows what others are capable of- even when they don’t believe it themselves. He prefers to lead from the front, and doesn’t appreciate being questioned, but respects skill and will (seemingly) relent when faced with someone better suited to handle a situation.

A step closer are his wards, his adopted family. To them he is even more demanding, but also more open with his feelings. He displays affection, even love, for his wards. He also displays a dry sense of humour in the face of the grim in gruesome, but forces others to decipher his jokes like mysteries- a backward way of showing his appreciation for his family’s skill.

And then there is the real man. Clear to only Alfred and perhaps Dick Grayson, Bruce is at his core a force of will and control, whose entire life has been built around fear. He feels fear every day, cultivates it, and conquers it. And no matter how close they may be to him, those who know him- truly know him- know that Bruce will never fully trust anyone. Everyone is a potential suspect. A potential threat. And he will never let his guard down again. He will prepare contingencies for EVERY eventuality, and will pursue what he thinks is best above all else.

POWERS/ABILITIES

Bruce Wayne spent 7 years traveling the world, and in that time he mastered a number of fields. Studying at the Sorbonne, Oxford, Harvard, or one of a half dozen other institutions by day, and mastering a variety of martial arts by night. As he shifted his focus to crime-fighting, Bruce trained under the likes of Henri Ducard, master detective and manhunter; the Ghost Tribes of the Ten-Eyed Brotherhood, found in the wilderness of North Africa; the Monks of the Hidden City of Nanda Parabat; Master Assassin Ra’s Al Ghul; and many others. After his return to Gotham, Bruce has constantly honed and refined his skills, training alongside other heroes, testing himself against villains, and travelling abroad to continue his studies.

He has been called ‘the Most Dangerous Man Alive’ by Superman, is a leading member of the Justice League, and has single-handedly invented dozens of amazing pieces of advanced technology. He has survived no-holds-barred encounters with various superhumans (including a mind-controlled Superman) and has lived to tell the tale.

His use of advanced meditation and mental states involving brainwave manipulation, self-hypnosis, and his photographic memory are partial explanations of his ability to master so many fields. The only others available are his excellent genes and obsessive, unrelenting mental faculties.
