Born and raised in Lafayette, Louisiana, 'Cajun country' a short ways from New Orleans, Augustine Fontenot was the baby girl in a family of wolves. Her own mother died shortly after she was born in a horrific car accident, and afterward, things just weren't the same in the Fontenot household. August's daddy worked long, hard hours to keep food on the table for his kids, and as soon as her brothers were old enough to work, the two older boys were also sent into the workforce. Her father by then had turned to drinking to dull the pain of losing his wife and having to raise his children on his own, and he had lost his job. August ran away one night when she was nineteen, hoping to forge her own path and avoid falling into the same cursed existence. Shortly after, Noah was killed in a shootout with local police while trying to rob a liquor store, and Zachariah moved in with another woman and cut most ties with his family. August's father had lost himself in the bottle, and one night August got the news that he had killed himself. She felt overwhelming guilt over the loss, but she knew that things wouldn't have been different if she'd stayed; her family was too broken to repair. She moved around Louisiana quite a bit, staying in one place for awhile as if trying it on for size, but she knew it wasn't particularly a safe existence.
