MUTATION INFORMATION
TRIGGER: Anger CLASS: Class 3 ABILITIES: Mind Control; Riley has the ability to control the minds of others. This includes implanting thoughts, actions, and controlling the actions of others. She can force them to speak, act, or think a certain way for short periods of time.
Telepathy: In addition to Mind Control, Riley has very low-key telepathy. She can pick up on the surface thoughts of those around her, particularly those of anyone who leaves their mind open and unprotected. Mostly, she is capable of forcing her own speech into the minds of others as a means of controlling their minds.
Illusions: Although not her least controlled but her most misunderstood ability, Riley is capable of forcing sights into other people's minds. These illusions are highly realistic and coupled with her other abilities can confuse others for reality more often then not. The illusions are capable of being broken, obviously, as nothing is tangible in them. Much like a dream that eventually gets too weird or scary, the person under the illusions are able to 'see' through them at some point (this is different for everyone) and break free of it.
Psionc Blasts: The only physically offensive ability Riley has, she is capable of mashing up all her other abilities and launching them out in a singular, psionic attack. This can cause mild confusion or disorientation for short periods of time, headaches, or severe pain.
SPECIAL SKILLS:
STRENGTHS: Riley's strengths remain in her ability to control other people's minds. She's got an influential and charismatic personality to begin with (at times) but she gets her way primarily with her usage of mind control and is very skilled at implementing small suggestions to get her way without notice. Her abilities can reach several people at once, and she has the ability to become a class 1 mutant - and her abilities could (and have when highly triggered) reach up to thirty people at once.
WEAKNESSES: Riley's abilities are very stressful - they strain her mentally and physically. While using her primary and secondary abilities don't cause her too much bother any more, when she gets particularly upset they do slip away from her quite easily and can overwhelm her brain to the point of causing headaches, confusion, brief periods of amnesia, unconsciousness, and coma.
SPECIAL SKILLS: Riley isn't a fighter, not yet. She's very smart and resourceful, but she hasn't had to go toe-to-toe with anyone before, so her only real 'special skills' are in her baking abilities. A(n almost) graduate of culinary school, Riley is a superb pastry chef.
IN-DEPTH PERSONALITY
Riley's got a very interesting sense of self. Given her abilities, one might expect her to be very spoiled or entitled. It's true - Riley is capable of getting anything she wants, when she wants it, if she uses her abilities. But she's just not that sort of person. She's resourceful, she's a bit manipulative, and she's a thinker. She likes to analyze every situation and figure out where it might lead before going for it. She's not spontaneous, and if she is it's only because she knows she can control the outcome if need be. Riley enjoys plans, she enjoys being in charge, and she really loves to figure things out.
Despite her analytical, logical, and somewhat harsh nature, Riley can be fun, too. Though she has gone through a lot in her time and become a bit more closed off than she used to be, Riley still enjoys just relaxing. Not everything has to be just so - she may plan everything but she includes 'rest and relaxation' in her schedules. She makes time to have fun and be silly. She's a normal person at heart, regardless of all the strategy and burliness that people often see first. Riley isn't even a loner - she loves people, but she just doesn't know how to interact with them without using her ability to get her way. People tend to not like her - even before she's done anything to deserve that dislike. It's a look in her face, maybe, the resting bitch face probably puts people off before they can even give her a chance to screw them over.
Though most of Riley's life has consisted of manipulating people, even before she knew she was doing it, after being kidnapped she's had a personality shift - she wants to be different. She wants to get along with people under normal circumstances, learn how to be someone's friend without expecting anything from it. Trying to change your whole mode of operation isn't easy, and it often comes off as something being seriously wrong with her. Attempts to be friendly get coupled with sudden shifts to anger and frustration when she thinks something isn't going well. But hey, at least she's trying.
IN-DEPTH HISTORY
PARENTS: Maryann and Eric Machi SIBLINGS: None. OTHER RELATIVES: Cessily Rose (grandmother), Alexander Rose (grandfather). Jack Rose (uncle), Diane Rose (aunt) - Jake, Annabelle, and Florence Rose (cousins). Mark Machi (uncle), Alexis Machi(aunt) - Madeline and Doug Machi (cousins).
Riley was born the only child to Maryann and Eric Machi - two normal, human parents who had no idea what they were getting into when they had a child. Particularly not this one. Growing up, even before the manifestation of her abilities, Riley tended to get what she wanted. She did not have to share with anyone else. Her parents love and attention was purely for her. She wasn't a mean child at all, and shared just fine with her cousins when they had family events and even made friends easily in preschool and kindergarten. It wasn't until just before middle school that things really started to take a turn.
It was little things at first, unnoticeable. Looking back, of course, with the knowledge of what she could do made these things obvious later in life but at the time her parents had no idea. They just found themselves giving in to little things far easier than they would have liked to. They tried to get parenting advice from their siblings with children, their own parents. They just couldn't understand their own lack of will when it came to punishing her, or telling her no. She wasn't even a particularly stubborn child - it wasn't like there were hours of arguments. They just said yes, even when they didn't want to. It seemed to be that way with her friends, too. Riley didn't even know what she was doing, or that she was doing it. If she wanted to play with that toy, she would. If she didn't want to share, she wouldn't. It never even came off as her being a brat or a poor sport, things just went the way she wanted.
Really, it wasn't until her secondary abilities began to manifest that the difference in their child was noticed. The telepathy came first. So small at the beginning, Riley would start answering things people weren't saying out loud. And then, when rooms got more crowded or at school she could hear everything. All these little surface thoughts. Headaches, bouts of fainting and a lot of frustration had them taking her to doctor after doctor. by age thirteen. By then, Riley knew she wasn't crazy - but she also knew if she told anyone what was really going on they'd label her with some sort of mental disorder. So she kept quiet, tried to control it the best she could. Her parents were worried, but no diagnosis stuck - depression, anxiety, intermittent explosive disorder, all these little things that just didn't really fit for them. That wasn't their child, but something was definitely going on.
When she was fifteen, the truth came out. Mutants were not a well known thing at that point, but there had been whispers... rumors of things happening with neighbors or unexplained events on the news. Filler pieces no one really thought anything about. Like ghost stories or alien sightings. But for Riley, it all became very real. Illusions were one of the most frightening bits of her abilities and during one awkward dinner where she was being reprimanded for not cleaning her room, a vision unleashed. It was like something out of a nightmare. Riley didn't even know she was doing it. Her parents went completely silent, their faces drained of color and an expression of shock plastered onto them. Just things Riley had been imagining, they were seeing. And when they broke out of it, they knew. Their daughter had done that. They didn't know how, or why, but they knew.
For a small bit, they were frightened of their daughter. But they did research - Maryann and Eric loved their daughter and did not want to just accept what was happening. They had to figure it out, figure out what it was, what she was. That's when they found out about mutants. After almost two years of research, they discovered a network of sorts, where mutants communicated to tell other mutants what was going on. There were even more unexplained news bits, but they knew what it was. For the sake of their daughter, they started to contact these mutants, discuss options for their daughter. It was near Riley's eighteenth birthday and graduation from High School that they could put a name to her abilities, and began to tell her about them.
By then, Riley knew she had to keep her abilities a secret. All the trouble caused by the mutant uprisings could only spell trouble and she did her best to hide them away. She could control them only in the sense that if she remained calm, if she kept herself cold and distanced they wouldn't manifest. That only does so much before it goes south, though. Not using her abilities, not feeling things, it often lead to outbursts. Outbursts of frustration that lead to breakthroughs of her abilities. It was during a singular class in culinary school that she nearly incapacitated half the class and sent the remaining few who were left conscious running and screaming with an awful illusion. Days later, Riley was kidnapped.
On the outside, her parents searched for her. Notified their contacts in the Mutant networks to try and have them find her. It took seven months before they could discover where she was and rescue her. In that time, Riley was subjected to a number of awful things she refuses to accept or even remember. Medications and all sorts of other things were used to keep her incapacitated and compliant, and the more she fought back and nearly escaped on her own, the heavier they drugged her until they could figure out a way to keep themselves safe from her abilities while they tested her. When she was rescued, she wasn't taken back to her parents. They saw her, of course, but for her own safety and with her agreement, they decided the best place for her was Crestwood.
WRITING SAMPLE
She was in for it, she knew. Riley was already packing her bags and planning to leave Culinary School. Her tiny apartment was near empty aside from her roommate's things. No one had really figured out where the incident had come from - even Riley didn't know. In fact, Riley wasn't even sure who she was. There were things there, faint memories, like where she lived, what she did. Her name, her family, her abilities even - she couldn't remember. She just knew she had done something awful and needed to leave. So she'd packed everything she knew for sure was hers and turned to head out the door. She had no idea where she would go, but there was no doubt that she would be leaving.
But instead, a loud booming voice came from the door. Stand back, it sounded. Buzzing in her head, a thrum of words she couldn't understand. Riley dropped her things and staggered back, putting a hand to her face. "What?" She said, not really sure who or what she was talking to. Alright let's do this. / Get this done quick / I want to be home by / Get her / This'll be fun / Boss'll be pleased / Didn't take long / Are my tranqs set? / I wonder if Jim is / Did Carla get the / so many words. The only thing that stuck was get her. Riley panicked and attempted to run, but there was nowhere to go. She lived three stories up, there was no back door - but, the fire escape. There was a fire escape, and just as she was forcing open the stupid, old window that never quite worked the door was broken down and a lot of things happened at once.
The room erupted with yelling - both mentally and out loud. A dozen men and women dressed in military-type clothing burst into the small apartment, filling nearly every inch of it. Riley screamed and the window slammed back shut on her hand. Panicked and only mildly angry, with very little control of her abilities, Riley attempted to force them all to leave. Two, three at a time would turn to go before being shaken out of their trance-like states by their peers. Whoever was holding her would suddenly let go. A few succumed to visions, or yelled in pain. But only ever two or three at a time, and in just several long seconds the struggle continued with Riley almost winning until --
Nothing. A prick of something in her neck and Riley was out like a light.
