Character Information

Name: Ebony Jones
Age/Birthday: 25/ April 2
Sexual Orientation: Straight
Supernatural Affinity: Cursed Werebear

Powers:
Strong as a Bear- Even in human form, Ebony packs a hell of a punch. In her normal shape, she's roughly four times as strong as a human man. In hybrid form, it's double that. She also possesses a Werecreature's durability, quicker healing, and resistance to disease and pain. She isn't necessarily fast, though, and though her hearing and sense of smell are much better than a human's, her eyesight isn't the best.

Appearance:
Height/Build: 5'7"/lean but densely muscled
Hair/Eyes: Black/Brown
Complexion/Ethnicity: Dark skinned/African American
Distinguishing marks: Deep, noticeable scar tissue across her upper right shoulder, shoulder blade, and across the ribs. A tattoo of a bear claw on her left shoulder.

Personality:
Ebony can be a hard pill to swallow, especially because she makes it a point to be so in just about every aspect of her life. If someone has the mental (and physical) fortitude to get past her defenses, she can be an extremely loyal and attentive friend- who will still go tell them to go fuck themselves whenever appropriate. She thinks of being tough, both inside and out, as an absolute requirement for life, and has done so since early childhood. Appearing 'vulnerable' in any way is absolutely out of the question, which can lead to Ebony finding herself in some sticky situations. She refuses to ask for help, ever, and will never admit that she can't do something. She's extremely competitive, but her most difficult opponent is always herself. Her self esteem isn't the greatest, but she compensates with a lot of aggression to keep people from seeing it. Her greatest fear is being thought of as weak, in any shape or form, and for a number of complicated reasons, she seems to think everyone automatically believes just that.

History:

Ebony was born in Markham, a south side suburb of Chicago with a rather nefarious reputation. Her parents, like many others in the neighborhood, were decent people who's families had rough starts stretching back multiple generations. Poverty and violence often went hand in hand under such conditions, and in the lower wrungs of society, being dealt a bad hand generations back usually spelled the same for generations to come. Her mother was a bit of a flake who never seemed to be able to hold a steady job, and ended up leaving their family when Ebony was four years old. Her father, the most stable relationship in Ebony's entire world, worked as a mail carrier for the USPS during the day, while supplanting their income as a janitor at a gym in a more affluent suburb twenty minutes north. Ebony's grandmother watched the kids when she could, but crippling arthritis made the job difficult in the early years. Later came the dementia. Ebony's escape had always been school, which she loved, until she became a target for bullying like so many others. She began acting out in the 4th grade, and ended up suspended a number of times before her father finally found an outlet.

Ebony began accompanying her father to the gym on nights after school, where in exchange for a few more hours at work, a generous employer would watch her and help her study. It didn't take long for her to express interest in professional fighting. The UFC craze was just starting it's stride of popularity in America, and Ebony wanted nothing more than to be part of it.

Once Ebony turned eleven, she officially began training with the gym's owner. At first it was only to give the pent-up, high energy girl something to do besides school work, then it evolved to self-defense, considering the neighborhood they lived in had started to tank even further, and was now fully enveloped in gang territory. When she was sixteen, she fought in her first competition, and barely scraped by with 4th place. She trained harder, and the next year made 2nd, where she seemed to plateau. Professional fighters never put much in the way of dinner on the table, not unless you were one of the greats. At eighteen, Ebony took a job with the gym as a self-defense instructor, and continued to further her training into different forms of martial arts- her favored being Krav Maga. She graduated high school, but had no need for college, as long as she had her small circle of friends, her family, and her competitions.

When Ebony was twenty-two, somehow her friends got it in their head that a 4th of July camping weekend up near the Wisconsin border was a good idea. Ebony went along, mostly because of the long on-going thing she had for one particular friend. She'd projected the weekend to be boring, at best maybe get somewhere with her crush, but it ended up being life-changing. Having virtually no sense of woodsmanship or direction, Ebony ended up lost on a trail near sunset. Her friends looked for her through the night. Her crush was the one that found her, nearly torn to shreds and almost bled out on the forest floor.

She woke up in the hospital, miraculously still alive, but with some bad news awaiting her, delivered by the nurse assigned to her room at the time. She hadn't just been attacked- she'd been mauled by a werecreature. A bear, to be exact. And survived.

Ebony did not take the news or adjustment well at first. For months, she rebelled against herself and her new nature, and spent the full moon locked in the basement cell of the local county jail. On advice from Isis, who had become her friend through the ordeal, eventually Ebony came to grudgingly accept her new life. But when she won the next UFC competition by the widest margin she'd ever accomplished?

She began to embrace it.

Three years later, Ebony is at the top of her game in the UFC circles, but because of fairly new regulations barring weres from competing in major, professional circuits, her living is still made as a martial arts and self-defense teacher. She's moved up, at least- with her own decent apartment in the city, a pricey gym signs her paychecks.

Weaknesses:

Distrusting: Ebony doesn't let many people close, and those on the outside are automatically viewed by potential threat level.
Aggressive: She's a fight-first-ask-later type of girl, and she'll go toe to toe with anyone (physically or verbally) if she feels she has something to prove. It's not even about anger management more than low self-worth.
Intentionally abrasive: Ebony isn't a very happy person, and she takes it out on anyone who even remotely irritates her. Even if it isn't intentional.

Strengths:

Tenacious: Once Ebony puts her mind to something, she'll stop at nothing to achieve her goal, no matter what the means, or the cost.
Protective: To the very few people she allows close enough to be friendly with, Ebony is extremely protective. Aggressively so, even. She also absolutely hates bullying, and will step up to defend a victim of such even if she doesn't know them.
Fearless: Her low self-worth has one beneficial side effect; Ebony uses any flare of personal fear to fuel her tenacity and drive. It's not that she doesn't feel afraid, but instead twists the feeling into something that she needs to conquer.
