Alec is very serious, soft-spoken and self-conscious, almost the polar opposite of his sister Isabelle, and he still doesn’t feel completely comfortable in his own skin. Alec can be very cautious and it takes him some time before he truly starts to trust people; he has a tough exterior but has a sensitive inner core. He is brave but his caution takes precedence in his actions. According to Jace, he has “the truest heart” of anyone and “the strongest faith in other people”. He is very aware of emotional pain and heartbreak, and he does what he can to prevent this from occurring among those he loves, despite the fact that he has no problem giving his heart away.

He is extremely loyal to his friends and family and often put their welfare and well-being ahead of his own; he is highly protective of those that he loves, and he always puts their safety first. Alec is extremely caring to those he loves and he will do anything to save his family and friends, to the point of putting himself in danger to protect them. He is very straight forward to the point of almost being blunt. As the eldest of his siblings, Alec takes on the most responsibility for things. He makes every effort to act wisely in all situations, carefully weighing out decisions. He is remarkably clever, probably the most out of the group. He is also usually the healer of the group and others come to him the most frequently for help with an iratze.

Alec’s two major faults are that he can easily be “guilted” into things and that due to his insecurities, he tends to get very jealous. He can also be hard on himself, especially when he’s upset and can be stubborn at times. Alec held the secret of his homosexuality for years with only his sister Isabelle knowing his secret. He was skeptical about coming out, but now that he has, he is a role-model for other closeted Shadowhunters. He’s still struggling with the lack of acceptance from his father and pushing against barriers with the Clave.

Alec has some of the Angel Raziel's blood flowing through his veins, giving him the ability to be able to apply runes to his skin to enhance his abilities and to allow him to use seraph blades in battle.

His coming out emboldened other gay Shadowhunters to embrace their sexuality.

Alec's full name, Alexander, means 'defending men' in Greek.

Alec is named after two of his ancestors: Alexander Lightwood and Gideon Lightwood. He also greatly resembles Will Herondale.
