APPEARANCE.
The most startling thing about Susan is her build. She's relatively tall, but she's incredibly thin. Waifish, almost, and kind of frail looking at times. Her bright blue eyes and vibrant red hair are the second and third most notable things about her. Susan has several scars on her body from the Second Wizarding War, and a slight scar surrounding her thigh from when she splinched her whole leg off.
PERSONALITY
smart.
Susan doesn't have the same sort of brilliance as Hermione does, but she is incredibly smart. Perhaps not the most innovative thinker, she is creative and incredibly hard-working. The amount of time and dedication she put into her studies, combined with a very good memory makes Susan highly book smart.
kind.
Kindness needs no explanation. Like most Hufflepuff's, Susan generally gets along with just about anyone. With a sincere amount of self-confidence issues, Susan firmly believes she can make up for what she lacks otherwise with being extremely kind, almost to a fault.
ambitious.
Not Slytherin-style ambitious, Susan has still always had high hopes for her future. It felt, in some ways, that she needed to make up for the fact that almost everyone else in her family was dead. There was no one else to carry on the legacy, and as she had no brothers or sisters to speak of, Susan put a lot of pressure on herself to achieve something her parents could be proud of.
helpful.
Another truly Hufflepuff trait, and tying in well with her perpetual need to be kind, Susan is a helpful girl. Need a sober-apparition home? She's got you. Need a babysitter? Look no further. Shoulder to cry on? She's got ice cream ready. Being helpful just brings Susan happiness, moreso than just about anything else.
determined.
When Susan really sets her mind on something, it's difficult to deter her. She can become hyper-focused, obsessive, and relentless when it comes down to getting something done she believes needs doing.
nervous.
Coupled with low self-esteem, Susan often finds herself anxious and nervous. She likes to be on her own the most in almost every situation, she finds it very difficult to connect with people and becomes socially anxious in even the most relaxed situations.
self-conscious.
If it's not obvious by now, Susan has very low self-esteem. She consistently believes what she has tried to do, who she is, what she looks like, how she thinks, what she has or hasn't achieved, is a direct reflection of her worth as a person, and in her own mind, it is never enough. This came off, most frequently, as her being just being shy or quiet. Really, it was the propensity for overthinking and being stuck in her own thoughts that kept her so quiet.
perfectionistic.
When you put the kind of pressure on yourself that Susan does, it's easy to slip into the need for perfection. Being perfect, acting perfect, following the right path in her life, are all things she struggles to do constantly "right" by her own, warped standards.
obsessive/compulsive.
Without the same level of smartness, contacts, and capability as many other students had, achieving the same or more than them became an obsession. Most of what she does is often to gain some sort of control over her life, and she can become extremely singularly-focused on things.
jealous.
Well, you can't be self-conscious, nervous, and obsessive without a healthy dose of jealousy, right? Susan, imagined or not, often feels jealousy over her peers. Jealousy of people who have achieved more than her. People who just... live, normally, without the same pressures and efforts she puts on herself. It's a vicious cycle, and jealousy is often at the heart of it.
HISTORY
BEFORE.
warning; contains some triggering material ; eating disorders
• Born March 10, 1980 to Wesley and Marian Bones in Godric's Hollow.
• Just one year after Susan's birth, nearly the entirety of her family was murdered by Death Eaters. They were all very outspoken against Voldemort in the war, and they paid dearly for it. Even her young cousins were murdered, and her own parents stopped helping in the war and went into hiding, given that her mother was a muggle-born.
• Wes and Mary married during the war after a few short months together. Like many of the time, they rushed into marriage. They weren't perfect, that was obvious, and there was quite a bit of fighting at home during Susan's childhood but the pair refused to part ways, and did their best to make things work. Deep down, they really do love each other.
• It became apparent from a young age that Susan was a determined and head-strong child, even if she was a bit anxious. From the moment she could talk and walk, Susan wanted to emulate her Aunt and parents in every way possible. Disappointing them was not an option.
• Her perfectionistic tendencies and her anxieties were worrisome to her parents but remained an untouched subject. To a respectable family like theirs, issues were not to be gossiped or spoken about and Susan's personality traits were looked upon as positive, not negative.
• Starting Hogwarts was one of the single most amazing moments in Susan's life. Just like the majority of the Bones', she was sorted into Hufflepuff - a defining moment and one of her proudest.
• Susan did not make good friends all that easily, though she was friendly with many people. Her quiet, anxious nature was easily outshone - it quietly devastated her, and she worked twice as hard to shine in other ways.
• The first three years were rather uneventful. The Tri-Wizard Tournament was the most exciting thing to happen so far in a not-scary way, and of course, she has an extraordinary amount of love for being a Hufflepuff, so rooted for Cedric Diggory during the Tri-Wizard Tournament. Although, as Harry Potter was her classmate as well, she certainly hoped he came in second. She had never dreamed, however, that they would tie - and that tying would lead to Cedric Diggory, widely known as just about the
only
Hufflepuff to bring the house much pride in recent years, dying. By murder, in fact, Death Eaters having killed him when the whole Tri-Wizard Tournament ended up being warped into a plot by Voldemort to get to Harry. The death shocked Susan - it wasn't as if she thought people were invincible, her whole family had been slaughtered with the exception of her own parents and her Aunt, but the fact that it happened at Hogwarts, to someone from her own house? It put the whole thing in perspective, and Susan's first bit of obsession with death and dying sparked in her head.
• Up until her 5th year, Susan had issues with stress-eating and was always a sort of plump child. It wasn't something anyone really noticed until she got taller and did not get any slimmer. There were appearances to be kept, and her mother may have suggested now and then that she try to lose weight. During the stress of OWL year, and the sheer amount of subjects she was taking, the DA meetings, alongside the need to be perfect and get O's in all her favorite subjects, Susan developed an eating disorder. Many wrote it off to stress, as opposed to anything actually being wrong.
• She did, in fact, achieve stellar O.W.L scores, and continued in all her subjects to N.E.W.T level. It was realized quickly that she was aiming for a job in the Ministry of Magic. Though she was, of course, wanting to be part of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement, just like her aunt whom she idolized, her secret passion and desire was to become an Unspeakable - becoming even more pronounced after the death of her aunt and the escape of all the Death Eater's that killed her family. She became morbidly obsessed with death - and given the stories she'd heard about (some) of the DA's trip into the Ministry, Susan was sure if anyone was studying death, the Unspeakables were - and there'd be a chamber for it.
• The second Wizarding War meant, for her seventh and final year, Susan had to try and actually pass all her NEWT level tests and complete her education well enough to land a job post-war, if there was a post-war, while Hogwarts was under the indirect control of Voldemort, and still mourning the death of her Aunt, and worrying all the time about her parents. However, this time, there would be no hiding - she didn't have to worry anymore about embarrassing her Aunt, which is why she had been so hesitant to join the others in the DA against Umbridge, even though she joined in for the lessons (she needed that O in DADA, obviously).
• She was amazed to see how many were not like her, though. And if this were a different time, maybe, she would have acted more similarly to Zacharias - her very best friend, or at least, certainly her longest friend. In fact, she
had
acted like Zacharias in previous years. However, Susan had never had the self-preservation streak that Zacharias did, and though she downright disgusted with him in
joining in
on torturing first years at the Carrow's instruction, she was one of the first to readily forgive him after-the-fact. The whole year brought about a number of realizations about herself and her classmates. She found herself braver than she knew, stronger than she thought herself capable, and as the year went on she was more and more outspoken against the Carrows, Snape, so when the war came to Hogwarts, Susan was ready and joined in the fight with all the other DA members, and the Order, when it broke out.
• Somehow, someway, the War was won. Susan would never forget that final battle. It wasn't like practice. It wasn't like harassing the Carrows, comforting students in trouble who'd be tortured at their so-called teacher's hands. Her parents showed up after the fight started. She watched them and countless other people die during the battle. Remembering what happened that day still gives Susan nightmares, though she is aces at repressing her own feelings and not dealing with trauma.
• Although she wouldn't have had to go back to Hogwarts to join the DMLE - which she was sorely tempted to do, in honor of her Auntie, Susan went back with most of her classmates to do her NEWTS. Going back to the castle was hard - her nightmares were worse than ever there, and literally could not step foot into the Great Hall. Susan, in fact, did not actually eat in the Great Hall that entire year. It passed in a haze, not at all like her prior six-and-a...half?- years at Hogwarts. She threw herself so wholly into her studies it was impossible to think of anything else, and at the end of it her NEWTS were actually quite impressive, more than enough for the Ministry (though not good enough for herself). She originally applied for a position as an Unspeakable in the Death Chamber, but barely missed out on the position. Instead, she ended up as a Secretary to the Wizengamot, and a year and half later became the Secretary for the Auror Office.
AFTER.
• The second people started coming back from the dead, Susan nearly lost her mind. They could come back - he parents, her auntie. Maybe bring her other family back, as well. As if - if she could just put them all together again, the pressure would be off of her, she could reset some things somehow. When Amelia did, in fact, come back, Susan could not have been more overjoyed. They were close enough growing up that Susan felt like just not getting a loved family member back, but like she was regaining a friend. Despite the uncertainty, despite knowing that if they all just died again as suddenly as they started coming back, it would likely break her, Susan still didn't hesitate to see her Aunt as soon as she could. She redoubled her efforts in trying to get into the Death Chamber, desperate to know if maybe she could make her parents come back, to know if they would stay, with the additional fear of what they were, where they came from, were they dangerous? The back-and-forth tug of war between being afraid of the unknown and wanting her family to come back. The closest she got was becoming Anthony Goldstein’s assistant, but she’ll take it.
