CHILDHOOD: Cas' parents didn't love each other. It wasn't a secret, everybody knew that. They certainly screamed it at each other enough. I hate you was practically goodnight in the Goyle household. Their parents had forced them into it. Something about protecting the bloodlines and good matches and keeping up appearances when half their relatives had ended up in Azkaban.
Her father was a drunk. Not a functioning one either, but a mean drunk with a sharp right hook and a short fuse. Mother wore a lot of makeup to hide the bruises. Cas learned to duck before she learned to walk.
Her mother was miserable. A loud, bitter, bulldozer of a woman, Millicent spent half her life fighting with her husband and the other half anywhere but at home. She took Cas with her when she could. To museums, art galleries, restaurants. She worked for the daily prophet, highlighting the culture scene that seemed to grow every day in Wizarding London. Those were the times Cas remembered being happiest. Those were the times she remembered her mother actually smiling.
Cas was nine when her father nearly killed her. He'd been drinking all day, and Mother was away. Covering some sort of musical festival that Cas was too young to go to. She didn't remember what she'd done to set him off. It didn't matter. All the mattered was that if her mother hadn't come home right when she did Cas' head would have been bashed in on the livingroom floor.
She stayed ar St. Mungos for two days. She never fully regained the hearing in her right ear. They also never went home.
Things got better then. She and her mother little flat in Diagon Alley and a bulldog named Sandwich. Millicent never officially changed her name, but neither of them ever went by Goyle again. Cas went on more of her mothers assignments, and gained a real love for travel and art. They were happy.
HOGWARTS: Hogwarts had always been like a cautionary tale to Cas. Her mother had hated it there, said it was dangerous and the education was barely worth it. She had almost decided to homeschool her daughter before grudgingly allowing her to go.
But to Cas it wasn't really that dangerous, and it certainly wasn't as exciting as all her mothers stories. But she made some friends her first year, and discovered she had a knack for charms and a real head for books as well as art. She fit in well with her fellow Ravenclaws, and corrected every Professor who called her Goyle.
That summer her mothers long time friend Lila Hanson moved in. They shared a room and kissed sometimes. Cas liked her.
Cas rarely saw her grandparents, and her mother urged her to be herself at every turn. During her life with her father she'd been forced to wear pigtails and frilly dresses and keep clean. By third year Cas had her hair cut short and dressed like a boy more often than not. Some of the other kids teased her for it, but she had her mothers temper and her father's right hook, and they rarely picked on her again. For a while she wondered if she was actually a boy, but that label didn't fit. Neither did girl. So she simply decided that she was neither, or both, and if anyone had a problem with that they could take it up with her wand. Very few people did.
She started dating Pryia when they were in their fifth year. They lasted until graduation and stayed friends after.
Her love of painting and drawing soon morphed into a love of tattoo artistry, and she got some of her mothers friends to teach her. She began experimenting on herself and her friends, and by the time she graduated she could do full color and fully animated pieces.
POST HOGWARTS Cas graduated with decent NEWTs and began training at St. Mungos. At first things were going well. She liked her job, she liked her colleagues, and she still made sure to travel with her mother and Lila every summer. She kept up with her tattoo art as well, working weekends at a parlor in Diagon Alley as well as inking herself, her mother, and her friends.
She passed her first round of Healer training and was assigned as a research assistant to a prominent Healer who was doing fascinating work with Muggle science. She'd never considered the prospects of combining muggle medicine with magic, but Healer Braum seemed to think they could revolutionize the way they cared for people. They were specifically researching muggle fertility treatments, and Healer Braum really felt like they were on the verge of a breakthrough. Something that could really turn around the falling wizard birthrates. Cas was very excited about it.
