Childhood
Millies parents didn't love each other. It wasn't a secret, everybody knew that. They certainly screamed it at each other enough. I hate you was practically goodnight in the Bullstrode household.
Her father was a drunk. Not a functioning one either, but a mean drunk with a sharp right hook and a short fuse. Her mother wore a lot of makeup to hide the bruises. Millie learned to duck before she learned to walk.
Millie knew she was ugly before she knew how to speak. She can't remember a time when someone wasn't commenting on her 'unfortunate’ bone structure or how hard it would be to find her a husband.
Her father was embarrassed by her, despite the fact that she looked exactly like him. Girls were supposed to be tiny and demure and seen but not heard. Millicent was none of those things. She often ripped the seams out of the delicate outfits her mother dressed her in, and grew so fast she was always showing off her ankles, despite the house elves best attempts. She rebelled against her shortcomings by being loud and aggressive, quick to violence and with a temper than made the very walls shake. If the only attention she was going to get was negative, then by God she would get as much of it was she could. Her only 'feminine’ pastime was her art. She loved to draw and paint and sculpt. She even tried her hand at making jewelry.
Milli was nine when her father nearly killed her. He'd been drinking all day, and Mother was away. Some sort of charity function. She didn't remember what she'd done to set him off. It didn't matter. All that mattered was that one minute everything was fine, and the next her head was smashed into the antique cabinet.
She stayed ar St. Mungos for two days. She never fully regained the hearing in her right ear. Her parents didn't even visit. .
Hogwarts
Millicent was a swarthy beast of a girl when she went off to Hogwarts, and quickly found herself in Slytherin. She didn’t fit in with most of the other girls in her dorm, and she liked it that way. Anything they may have had in common she crushed with her loud sarcasm and propensity to punch people she thought were being 'fake'. She gave Pansy Parkinson a black eye in the first week, and after that the girls tended to stay away from her. She spent most of her time with the Slytherin boys. Crabbe and Greg were idiots, but they could at least keep up with her. Milli was convinced that Draco, Theo and Blaise were constantly making fun of her behind her back, and honestly they probably were. Millie was as aggressive with them as she was with the other girls. But after a while she found herself warming up to them, despite her self. She could be funny and charming when she wanted to be, and by second year they were at least friendly, if not exactly friends. That didn't stop her from beating on Vince and Greg whenever they were assholes, which was often, and she often found herself in brawls with other students. Memorably she got Hermione Granger in a headlock in dueling club.
As the Bulstrode heir certain things were expected of her, even if she was 'unfortunate looking’. In third year she was conditionally betrothed to Vincent Crabbe, which put quite the strain on their friendship. What had been a jovial, one-of-the-guys sort of relationship morphed over night, and suddenly Vince seemed to think Millie should be “more like a girl”. It stung, and Millie punched him more than once for saying things like that. It didn't help that she'd figured out she didn’t much care for boys. She'd caught herself staring at Parkinson one too many times, and there was something about Hermione Granger that made her mental. Yet another failure at being a proper girl. Still, Vince was her friend, and she knew she could get married off to someone much worse.
In fifth year Millie joined the Inquisitorial Squad, and she loved it. She felt powerful and important and really seen by Umbridge. She genuinely was sad when the woman left the school.
Her father joined Voldemort as soon as he rose to power, though he was never important enough to make it into the inner circle. He always talked about gaining favor, and bringing the Bullstrode name 'up the chain'. It was common gossip that Hyacinth Black had married 'beneath herself’ with Bartholomew Bulstrode, and he saw the war as a way to raise his social standing. He saw the Bulstrodes as being on par with the Blacks, the Lestranges, and the Malfoy's, and he was always trying to toady favor.
Millie didn't get very involved in the doings with Voldemort. Girls were supposed to be delicate flowers, after all. Millie couldn't help idolizing Bellatrix Black though. The woman was fierce, and powerful, and no one would ever have dared to tell her she was lesser for being a girl. Sure, maybe she was more than a little crazy, but Millie liked crazy.
The last year of Hogwarts was an interesting one. On one hand, things were good for a Pureblood Slytherin. Millie had been on the Inquisitorial squad, and she liked having some of that power back. On the other hand, all this mindless zealotry was disgusting. Millie hated the careless way the Carrows ruined their education, and she could see how wrong their treatment of the 'problem’ students was. That didn't mean she went out of her way to help them, that wouldn't get her anywhere, but she didn't approve either. So she focused on her own life.
When Pansy came to her for protection Millie was, well, surprised. They'd started getting along a little better recently, but she wouldn't have called them friends. Still, Pansy was scared. A lot of people at the school didn't like her, and she had no idea what Potter's people would do to her. She asked Millie for help, and Millie couldn't say no. Parkinson was alright, after all, not to mention beautiful, and it actually ended up being nice spending time with her. Plus it meant she could focus her attention of protecting Pansy and not on everything else happening in the castle.
Vince and Greg were having the best time of any of the Slytherins it seemed, and she couldn't begrudge them that. Still, she wasn't crazy about what they were doing either. She and Vince were scheduled to be married as soon as they graduated, and Millie considered failing her NEWTs more than once. She would have, if she thought that would buy her another year of school. She knew it wouldn't take though, her father wasn't even keen on her getting her NEWTs in the first place. Then Voldemort attacked the school, and Millie hid in the dungeons with most of the rest of the Slytherins. When it was all over she found out Vince had gotten himself killed. Millie didn't know how to feel. On the one hand she was devastated at the loss of her friend. On the other, no Vince meant no marriage...
After the Battle and Now
Millies father was one of the first Death Eaters rounded up and captured after Voldemort fell. Millies mother was inconsolable, and Millie wasn't welcome back in her house. It was just as well, since Millie didn't want to be there anyway.
Her aunt had left her a piece of shut run down old house that had once been a nice little manor in the country, and so she moved there. For a few months she just didn't do much of anything at all. No father, no mother, no marriage no expectations… She could go anywhere and do anything, and that scared her. She'd never had that kind of freedom before, and she didn't know what to do with it. Millie went back to get her NEWTs more for something structured to do than any real desire to finish her education. She liked school, but she didn't expect any Slytherin to find a warm welcome at the castle. Still, it was something to do, wasn't it, and maybe she'd finally be able to figure out what a life without restrictions actually meant to her.
PLOT & STORYLINES
PLOT IDEAS:
Millie has spent her life rebelling against expectations, but now that there are no expectations left she doesn't know what to do. I'd like her to be able to come out of the closet, and finally live as her true self. I want her to find something she's passionate about, maybe persue her art more, and finally feel comfortable in her own skin. She also needs to come to terms with the damage her inaction caused. She feels like because she didn't actively hurt anyone that she wasn't part of the problem. It's time for her to confront that standing back and letting bad things happen is as bad as wielding the wand.
Actual Friends:
Millie has never had a friend she could connect with beyond the superficial. She always assumes the worst about people. It's time she let down her guard a little and let some people in
Amends:
Millie was an abuser, whether she sees it or not. She was raised with abuse and she passed that on to her classmates. It would be great if she could find one or more people that she directly hurt, whether through her actions or inactions, and finally be made to face her own demons and the way she treats everyone around her
Girl Crush!:
Millie has a crush on SO MANY girls. Because she's been in the closet so long it's almost like she has a crush on every girl, just because they're girls. If she could find someone in particular to place that girl longing on she might finally be ready to admit her homosexuality. Requited or not doesn't matter.
