MAGIC wand; Aspen, griffin claw core, 10 inches, firm patronus; golden eagle, a symbol of rising above one's situation. It took him a long time to learn to produce the corporeal form. boggart; His father, eyes manic and raised fists dripping with blood. mirror of erised; What he sees in the mirror is himself, smiling, truly happy for the first time in his life. To one side of him is his mother, a short, pretty woman he's never met. To the other side is a dog, a young woman with dark hair, and a small child. He believes the three of them are the family he will likely never have. POLITICS political views; As he believed himself a muggleborn for most of his life, Kellan has no real prejudices when it comes to magical blood. In truth, he despises a majority of the upper class pure families for their bigotry. He's mostly indifferent to magical creatures and would be fine with them being granted rights within wizarding society. It's a bold stance to have taken, given his past, but he believes that judging someone based on their family is ridiculous and hurtful. In his job as a Hit Wizard, he has to be fair and unbiased, so it worked out well that he's inclined to live and let live, whether some of his coworkers felt similarly or not. It hasn't always made him the most popular person, but he stopped caring what other people think after a point. These days, he mostly just keeps his head down as best he can. RELATIONSHIPS sexuality; Heterosexual significant other; None family; Steven Bundy, Kellan's father, is a muggle. He formerly worked as a fisherman on a ship out of Cullercoats. Currently, he is a resident of a long-term care facility in Ipswich. He and Kellan never got along well at the best of times. Kellan doesn't visit him, though he receives periodic updates. Steven's family has produced magical children a few times, though Steven (to Kellan's knowledge) was either unaware or unconcerned. Verity Bundy is a second or third cousin from that line. Kellan's mother, whom he's never met, is a witch. She left Steven shortly after Kellan was born. Kellan himself knows nothing about her save her name and her blood status (half), since Steven refused to reveal any details beyond constant reminders that she abandoned the two of them. In the deepest corners of his heart, Kellan knows that she had her reasons. He also wonders whether he may have a half-sibling in the world somewhere. (This is a plot idea I'd be open to sharing with another player!) His paternal grandparents both passed before he was born. His maternal grandparents (as well as possible aunts/uncles/cousins) could still be alive. APPEARANCE height; 5'10" weight; 170lbs/12 stone and 2 lbs build; Stocky and muscular hair; Brown, kept cropped close to his head. eyes; Blue description; Kellan is not very tall, but he makes up for his lack of height with broad shoulders and a muscular build. He's capable of both going unnoticed in a crowd and making himself seem larger than he really is, depending on the situation. While not conventionally handsome because of his too-full lips and the ears that stick out from his head a little too far for his liking, he isn't exactly a troll. He keeps his hair cut short, though he can often be seen sporting at least a day's worth of stubble. Kellan wears no jewelry and has adopted a fairly plain style of dress. He prefers jeans and t-shirts over suits or pressed trousers. As far as distinguishing marks go, he has a few tribal tattoos, completed during a three-year stint in Germany. PERSONALITY; likes; Having a pint on a Friday night, watching muggle football, autumn nights, a crackling fire, and dogs. dislikes; The smell of fish, sloppy/idiotic drunks, criminals, people who have no regard for others, and most of his former housemates. strengths; Defensive spells, physical activities, potion brewing, magical tracking, a good head for dates and faces, and dueling. weaknesses; Any sort of herbology, astronomy, his tendency to hold a grudge, lack of faith in other people, and stubbornness. description; Since birth, Kellan has been a quiet, reserved individual who keeps to himself. He doesn’t need the company or approval of others to live his life, though that hasn’t always been the case. As a child, he wanted to please people – especially his father. He let himself be used and taken for granted without a fight or thought for his own feelings, but quickly learned to avoid those who took advantage of him. As a result of his years at Hogwarts and the things he suffered at the hands of his father, he doesn’t trust easily. He never made many friends, and when he did spend time with others, it was generally outside Slytherin. For a long time, he wondered why on earth the Sorting Hat had placed him in that house. He wasn’t cunning or particularly ambitious. The Hat saw things in him that he couldn’t see, however. Over time, he developed a strong sense of self-motivation. Kellan wants a better life than he had as a child. He wanted to be successful without having to depend on a single other soul. In the end, he would do whatever it took to achieve independence, short of hurting someone else. To people who don’t know him, he is the strong, silent type. Brooding, but not unapproachable. He is what they envision when they think of the consummate Hit Wizard. He’s good at his job and takes pride in what he does, bringing justice to those who deserve it. He’s fair-minded, though he likes rules and structure. The few people who spend time with him on a relatively regular basis know him as someone who is decent and open to change, when it’s change in the right direction. Kellan has a good heart that he keeps well hidden. He has the potential to become something more than he is – closed off and emotionally unavailable – with the right people in his life. Since the war, Kellan has made an effort (if a small one) to become more socially active. There are a few guys he’ll go to the pub with on Friday nights, but he never gets drunk. He doesn’t like people who lose control of themselves and he’ll quickly step in to a situation that appears to be getting out of hand. He is very much the type to protect those who can’t look after themselves, which is one of the reasons he’s in favor of magical creatures obtaining rights within the wizarding community. The problem is that when he’s at his best, usually no one is around to see it, with the occasional exception of his co-workers. He’s generally a lone wolf and has trouble working as part of a time thanks to his trust issues. When it comes to romance, Kellan is one step beyond novice. He dated a Hufflepuff girl once and has gone on three dates since Hogwarts, but none of his relationships have lasted very long because of his fears. He’s terrified of being hurt again by someone who claims to love him. He’d rather be alone than go through that kind of pain and will generally find a way to ruin his chances with women (or potential friends). Working in law enforcement, he’s learned to face many of his other fears, such as that of dying. Being a Hit Wizard is an extremely dangerous occupation (each member of the squad has their own permanent bed at St. Mungo’s), so he has become quite capable of handling potentially fatal situations. He tackles them head on, but not without thinking first. Kellan can be adaptable when the situation requires, though he shuts down when things get personal. Despite his ‘off-limits’ nature, he is actually rather selfless, putting his coworkers and crime victims ahead of his own safety. In five words: brave, distant, strong, quiet, driven HISTORY; early childhood; Kellan was born in the small English fishing village of Cullercoats. His mother, unbeknownst to him, was a witch. She met Steven Bundy at a pub over summer holidays. Their affair was brief, but resulted in her pregnancy. Steven, a commercial fisherman, could be utterly charming when he chose, though he was never interested in a relationship. He was also never interested in children, so when baby Kellan showed up on his doorstep with a box of supplies and a note, he was less than thrilled. Gone for long stretches of the year, he had no time to raise a child. When he was home, he spent much of his time drunk and on the town with this woman or that. During the months that Steven was at sea, Kellan was left at a home for orphan boys since there was no other family to look after him. He was a small child and often sick, so the larger boys used him as a punching bag or as the object of their nastier pranks. Kellan didn’t mind it so much, because they didn’t know any better (did they?). They didn’t have family, like him. But it wasn’t long before he began to prefer the company of the bullies to that of his father. Steven left Kellan alone more often than not, but when he was home, he was both verbally and physically abusive. The government-funded school that Kellan attended never questioned the bruises, generally treating him as invisible whenever possible. Kellan took to hiding, spending his afternoons tucked away in inconspicuous places until he knew his father was out of the house. For some reason, no one ever found him or took much notice of his habits, even when he trespassed on private property. It would be several years before he learned why. At age eight, strange things began to happen. The boys who made sport of him often ended up with worse injuries than he did. If they bloodied his nose, he broke theirs with the slightest effort. Anger would bubble up in him, hot and violent sometimes, and a thought could send his opponent reeling. It didn’t always happen, but he hid himself away after each instance. It never happened with his father. Then he turned eleven and a letter arrived, claiming he was a wizard and was invited to attend Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. He waited until Steven was a in a particularly good mood to relay the information, though he never mentioned magic. Fortunately, Hogwarts would cost the same as leaving him with the orphanage, so Steven agreed. It was the one good thing he ever did for his son. life at school; At Hogwarts, Kellan continued to struggle. He was smart and did well in his classes, but he was still small and entirely too quiet for his own good. Thanks to the boys at his muggle school, he’d learned to keep to himself, not to try to fight back. It was the wrong thing to do in Slytherin, especially when all of his housemates believed him to be a filthy muggleborn. He was introverted and didn’t like talking about his home life, so it was difficult for him to make friends. Even that early in life, he’d learned not to trust other people because they would hurt him or betray him. It didn’t take long for Kellan to realize the sort of job he wanted after school, so he simply shuttered himself off and focused solely on his studies. With his small stature, he didn’t bother trying out for the Quidditch team, though he did enjoy watching the matches, usually from an empty back row with only his cat, Isa, as company. He returned home each summer and completed his holiday reading in familiar haunts. Eventually, most of his housemates seemed to forget he even existed, which was fine by Kellan. It allowed him some happiness. The summer between his third and fourth year, Steven discovered Kellan’s wand and spellbooks. He demanded Kellan explain everything, but refused to believe the truth and grew violent. He insisted that Kellan produce money with his ‘witchcraft’ to prove what he was saying. Kellan, terrified and on the verge of unconsciousness, lashed out in the only way he could: with magic. The spell was out of his control and went awry, leaving Steven a quivering mess on the floor. A group from the Ministry of Magic arrived shortly thereafter to investigate. Kellan was taken away, while the witches and wizards moved his father to the local long-term care facility to be looked after. There was no reversing the damage done, but the Ministry judged that the boy’s magic was only protecting him and therefore, he wasn’t at fault. They allowed Kellan to spend the final two weeks of the summer at St. Mungo’s, recovering from his injuries. He returned to school with the assurance that he would be placed with a foster family in the wizarding community over the following summer. The Ministry were true to their word, as he spent June of 1989 meeting potential foster parents. In July, he went to live with the Donovans, a couple in their late thirties who had no children of their own. Peter and Elise Donovan were kind, affectionate people who made every effort to show Kellan he was welcome with them. It took years, but Kellan began to come out of his shell under their care. He didn’t believe he would ever fully trust them, but he desperately wanted to. Wanted to know that someone cared for him, wanted to belong to someone he could love and have that love returned. Until he could open his heart, he finally enjoyed good nutrition, respect, and opportunities he’d never had before, to experience travel and being looked after, and learning more about the wizarding world. It was during his time with the Donovans that he began to grow, reaching his full height and a bulkier figure. He exercised often, thinking that if he got big enough, no one would ever trifle with him again. The Donovans were concerned, but they let him be. They understood that it would take time for Kellan to realize he was safe at last. Seventh year came and Kellan finished school with six N.E.W.T.s and an invitation to join the Department of Magical Law Enforcement for training thanks to his high marks in the prerequisite courses. after school; Though he didn’t want to infringe upon their kindness any longer, Kellan remained with the Donovans for the six months it took to finish his instruction. He rented a tiny flat with his first paycheck, but was home practically each night for dinner, since his first month’s rent and deposit had taken nearly all of his money. Seeing that his visits made Elise and Peter happy made Kellan open his eyes to the fact that he didn’t always have to be alone if he didn’t choose to be. They were always glad to see him and if something about his work made it to the papers, Elise would send an owl or stop by his place to make sure he was all right. Kellan began to smile more and for the first time in his life, he returned a hug. That he was an adult when it happened didn’t matter. He had someone to turn to. A real family. Things were working out for him. In the years leading up to the takeover, Kellan spent his time working, going to the occasional Quidditch match, or with the Donovans. He learned how to make small talk with colleagues, though he still mostly avoided crowds or social gatherings unless required by the Ministry. He moved into a slightly larger apartment and bought an owl of his own. He went furniture shopping with Elise and lead a completely normal life, dangerous job aside. Whenever he was injured and confined to hospital, his foster parents were there, usually with cookies in hand. He even managed to make a couple of friends, though they were mostly Ministry employees like himself. It was those friendships that made him question his stance during the takeover itself. Kellan had no interest in joining the Death Eaters. Its ranks were swelled with many of the people who’d tormented him during his school years for his blood status. He doubted they’d have accepted him anyway. In the end, days before the Ministry was completely overtaken, he resigned from his position. He didn’t want to be responsible for the arrest and imprisonment of innocent people. The Ministry fell and the Death Eaters took over. Muggleborns were being hunted down. Kellan did what he believed himself best at and went into hiding. He worked as a bouncer for an Irish nightclub as the war waged back home, feeling guilty for not joining the fight somehow. When it was all over for the msot part, he returned to England. In the interim, exhaustive research (inspired in large part by Verity's existence) led him to discover his mother's identity. He learned that she was a witch, but little else. It was enough. He missed his family, so the time had come to go home. Since making that decision, he’s been living his life much the same as before – spending time with the Donovans and working. |
