General description: The first thing people seem to notice about James (apart from the hair), is how very alive he is. Always smiling, talking and joking, and continuously moving. It’s basically impossible for him to sit still – James is always fidgeting. Naturally lanky; he is cursed with long arms and legs with bony knees & elbows, which don’t always go where he wants them to. However, years of Quidditch, charging around Hogwarts after Sirius and fighting for the Order has given James a more athletic physique than he would have gained naturally. He's got broad shoulders, strong forearms, a sharp collarbone and a dazzling, wonky grin.
James' outfits usually reflect a slightly wizarded-up version of muggle fashion. At the moment he favors button down shirts (sleeves rolled up) or plain T-shirts with jackets thrown haphazardly over the top. He lives in jeans with boots or battered old converse sneakers. And of course, there’s the glasses, which perhaps sit straight about 75% of the time.
And we have to mention the hair, don’t we? James has taken the trademark, jet-black Potter hair to a whole new level - his is just a fraction too long on top and tends to fall into his eyes on an increasingly regular basis. James tends to reach up and mess up his own hair a lot - initially this was to make himself look like he'd just come off his broomstick, but now it's more habit than any conscious decision. For the son of the man who invented Wizarding Britain’s most popular hair product, he’s not exactly on brand.
Spouse/partner (if applicable): Lily J. Potter Children:(if applicable) Harry James Potter (15 months) Parents: Euphemia & Fleamont Potter (Deceased) Sibling(s): None Cousins: None Pets: Artemis the cat (although she's Lily's really). Other: Sirius Black, Remus Lupin & Peter Pettigrew - adopted family
CONFIDENT - James has the kind of self confidence which only comes from being raised in a happy, comfortable home with parents that adored him. Everything seemed to come easily to him. He's loud, intelligent, witty and charming, and loves to be the centre of attention - in fact, he's never happier than when he and Sirius were planted in the middle of a spotlight, showing off and making people laugh. He'll talk to anyone, and at anyone, and is usually likable (or just loud) enough to pull it off.
FUNNY - James is blessed with a cracking sense of humour - even in the middle of a war he's usually grinning crookedly and is quick to laugh - and he does his best to look at things with a positive slant. He has a knack for causing trouble and a real flare for practical jokes and pranks (He kind of enjoys watching people run around like a bunch of drunk Billiwigs).
OPTIMISTIC - Basically, James is an optimist who works under the assumption that things will, eventually, be fine... It’s a difficult viewpoint to hold in a time of war, and even harder while they’re in hiding, but it’s got him through several difficult situations.
LOYAL - When it comes to his immediate circle, James is an incredibly trusting and loyal individual who loves his family and friends more than anything. He's a good husband, father and friend, and when it comes to the people closest to him he'd die for them a million times over, and wholeheartedly believes that they would do the same for him. He’ll do anything to keep Harry and Lily safe, even if it means putting himself in danger.
PROTECTIVE - As well as his obvious love for his wife and so, James very protective of his three best friends. Sirius has gone through more at home than anyone knows, Remus has his furry little problem, and Peter seems to spend half his time expecting to be kicked. James feels a responsibility to look out for the rest of the group, and is all too willing to curse anyone who threatens that.
LEADER - James is a natural leader. It’s a position he fills without thinking and where he feels most comfortable. He was a good Head Boy and Quidditch Captain at school, and has a natural way of making people want to follow him. He’s happy to take control of a situation and work his way around problems with a creative bent – despite how he comes across, these days he’s actually pretty responsible. However, hes is not good at giving up control and being told what to do. He will often go against people's advice (Or behind their backs) to go with his gut instinct, which has got him in trouble a few times in the past.
COURAGE - Above all things, this young man is Gryffindor through and through. He’s brave to a fault, and willing to stand up and fight for the things he believes in and the people he loves. James genuinely believes that fighting for your cause and protecting those closest to you is the noblest thing you can do, and has a real hated of cowards and liars
ARROGANT - It’s no secret that James used to have a reputation for being arrogant and kind of self-obsessed, and not without good reason. He was spoilt when growing up, and was never given any reason to doubt himself. Although he’s matured a great deal since those days, there’s still times when his arrogance blinds him to everything else. He’s fiercely competitive, likes to win and doesn’t always take criticism well, but he is improving.
BULLY - James has come a long way from the teenager who used to bully students in Hogwarts corridors, but that doesn’t mean that person is completely gone. James is capable of being truly unpleasant when he feels it is justified – he knows exactly where to hit to cause the most damage, and can be quite cruel when the mood strikes him
BLINDED - While James’ loyalty to his friends is a huge strength, it also plays against him. If Sirius suggested jumping off a cliff without a parchute, and a Slytherin suggested climbing down with a rope, James would be bounding off the edge without thinking. He’ll take his friends advise and opinion before anyone else’s, and is somewhat blinded by his loyalty and love for them. He’d put other people at risk if it meant helping them.
EMOTIONAL - James has never been good at hiding his emotions. He made his feelings for Lily clear from the first moment, and he did the same for his feelings for Severus Snape. Although he tries, James’ emotions are clearly displayed in his face and his actions, and he’s very honest about his feelings on people and subjects – be they good or bad.
Special abilities: James is a wizard and can perform magic with the use of a wand. He has a talent for transfiguration and wards. James is also an Animagus - he can transform into a large red stag at will.
(MARCH / 1960) – James was born as the first and only child of Fleamont (a potioneer) and Euphemia (a herbologist) Potter - a miracle baby after years of disappointment. As a result, he was spoiled – the Potter family was old and very wealthy thanks to James' father's invention of the magical Sleekeazy’s Hair Potion (‘two drops tames even the most bothersome barnet’). He sold the company at a vast profit when he retired, and James never wanted for anything. James grew up with an overinflated self of self-confidence, and hero-worshipped his Father, who was a stereotypical Gryffindor.
(SEPTEMBER / 1971) – James started Hogwarts, and met Sirius Black, Remus Lupin and Peter Pettigrew. They were all sorted into Gryffindor house, and so began some of the strongest relationships James would ever know. He and Sirius, in particular, got on like a house on fire – he would be James’ closest and best friend for the next decade. James’ loyalty, which previously had been devoted to his blood family, was extended to the three other boys, and was complete and unwavering.
(FEBRUARY / 1973) – After a year of clues. James, Sirius and Peter realised that Remus was a Werewolf. James’ devotion to his friends overshadowed any fear that he may have picked up during childhood, and they decided to help him in any way he could.
(NOVEMBER / 1975) - Two years later, the three succeeded in becoming Animagi. James could now take on the form of a large red stag at will, and they began to join Remus for his transformations. As well as pride in this rather momentous achievement, James started to learn more about Hogwarts school during their night-time exploits. For the first, but not last time, he disregarded his own safety in order to do what he felt was best for his friends.
(JULY / 1976) – Sirius turned up at the Potters’ doorstep after a violent clash with his Mother. It was the first time James had seen for himself the results of Sirius’ family life, and his Father had to grab him by the collar to keep him from flooing over there and telling them exactly what he thought. Sirius was disowned from the Black family, but moved in with James and his parents permanently. James secretly came to harbour a real hatred to the Black family for how they treated his friend.
(MAY / 1977) – In a moment of idiocy, Sirius told James’ lifelong enemy, Severus Snape, where to find Moony on the full moon. James heard what his friend had done and ran to pull Snape from the Whomping Willow, but not before he caught a glimpse of Remus at the other end. James realised he didn’t necessary have to like someone to do the right thing, and that some things were more important than his personal feelings. He also became genuinely angry with Sirius, possibly for the first time, but forgave him once he realised how much the other wizard regretted his actions.
(SEPTEMBER / 1977) – Much to everyone’s surprise, James was named Head Boy. For some reason, that badge installed a sense of responsibility into him. He had always been a natural leader, the planner and confidant of his friends, but now that was extended to the rest of the school population. It also meant he got to spend more time with a certain redhead, who had been named Head Girl…
(NOVEMBER / 1977) – With meetings and shared responsibilities, it was inevitable that James and Lily started spending more and more time in each others’ company. And he certainly wasn’t complaining – he’d fancied Evans since about second year. But suddenly he was seeing her differently (partly due to the fact that she wasn’t screaming at him). Lily was funny and clever as well as being insanely gorgeous, and the relationship went from strength to strength. James still isn’t quite sure how that first kiss by the lake happened, but it did, and they quickly became inseparable. James’ unshakeable loyalty extended to include Lily and his small circle grew ever so slightly.
(JANUARY / 1978) - James' parents passed away within a days of each other from complications with Dragon Pox. James was devastated, and attended the funeral in a daze, with Lily’s hand clenched in his and Sirius’ braced on his shoulder. James almost grew up overnight. Shortly after he sold the family home, put most of the money into savings, and used the rest to buy himself a flat close to Diagon Alley.
(JULY / 1978) - James graduated from Hogwarts and immediately joined the Order. The war had been escalating and James, along with his parents, had always been dedicated Dumbledore supporters. He had an inbuilt hatred of blood prejudice, and stood firmly against what the Death Eaters stood for. James’ stubborn, brave Gryffindor nature prevented him from standing to one side, and he was glad to help.
(1978 – 1979) - The Order was quite fun to start with. James doubted that was quite what Dumbledore had been going for, but the meetings, the missions, hanging out with Lily and his best friends to stop the bad guys… what wasn’t to like? Then things started to happen. People started to die.
James and Lily narrowly avoided death at Voldermort’s hand not just once or twice, but three times. And the third was the worst. They’d been so close to killing Lily. So incredibly close; there were probably only seconds in it. Even the flash of light and the bone-shattering agony of the cruciatus curse, or the feel of magic burning a T mark (for 'traitor') into his skin hadn’t prepared James for that moment. The escaped, only barely, and James managed the most spur of the moment proposal in the history of wartime. Maybe.
(OCTOBER / 1979) – Lily and James were married in a country church on Halloween, with a small party back at an Order Members house. Sirius was best man, and it was a rare moment of sunlight in an otherwise bleak war. The newlyweds spent a short while in Scotland for their honeymoon, with James promising to take her away properly once the war was over. Suddenly, he had a wife to take care of. A wife and, if Lily’s track of dates was to be believed, a baby.
(JULY / 1980) – Almost exactly 9 months later, Lily gave birth to a little boy. James had always thought he couldn’t love anyone any more than he loved Lily and his friends – they were like pieces of him. But Harry was something else. The dark haired baby was everything to James, and for the first time he knew what it felt like to be giddy with happiness and completely terrified all at once. Sirius was named Harry’s Godfather.
Of course, the happiness was short lived when they heard about the prophecy. They were put into hiding before the month was out, and a cold feeling of dread started to settle on James’ shoulders.
(1980 – 1981) – Despite the light that Harry had bought into their lives, the next year was hard. James went from an active, cheerful and enthusiastic Order member to a man stuck in his own house with a wolf prowling outside the door. He hated it, and quickly became restless and irritable. Instead, he was left waiting anxiously for news and visits from the Marauders, desperate for any updates. However, when they came they were often frustrating - Remus seemed to be going away more and more often, unable to tell them exactly where. Sirius and Pete were out being actually useful. Meanwhile, he was stuck at home changing nappies.
(JULY / 1981) - Harry’s first birthday came and went, although only Peter was able to visit on the actual day. Harry had grown into a cheerful, playful little boy with a mess of dark hair and Lily’s sparkling green eyes, and he and his Mother were the only things which kept James going. The idea that someone wanted to hurt him… it kept James up at night. If he thought about it too hard it made him physically ill. So when the idea of a Secret Keeper first came up a month or so later, he grasped at it with both hands.
