Personality: Before he dated Nancy, Steve was well known among his peers as a popular boy, although he had a terrible personality. He was a dick, far more concerned about his image and being cool than anything else. He knew the other popular kids and nobody else really mattered. His parents were rich and away on business a lot, and expected Steve to follow in his dad's footprints so school wasn't that important to him, and he almost always showed up late, eating his breakfast in class and asking dumb questions when he was called upon. And then he started dating Nancy Wheeler. And her friend Barb disappeared in his back yard and her little brother's best friend vanished and then there was the fight with Jonathan which lead to ...using a nail-studded baseball bat to beat the shit out of some weird thing that could open its entire face up what the hell??? He could have left Nancy and Jonathan alone to deal with the thing - they even told him to do just that - but he went back into Jonathan's house to help them.

This lead to Steve stopping being friends with Tommy H and Carol, and being more friendly with Jonathan (he even replaced the camera he broke), as he gradually stopped being just as much of a complete prick. Due to Nancy's influence, he even started trying a bit more in school, getting her to check his essays for him and studying with her.

He fell hard for Nancy, where he'd only really messed around with other girls, so when she got drunk at a Hallowe'en party and started yelling that everything (including them as a couple) was bullshit, he was beyond upset. Especially when they broke up. So the fact that he was able to pull himself together enough to look after all the kids when the Mind Flayer sent its demodogs after them, and again at the lab, and protect them against Billy (getting beaten up and knocked out in the process) and then to tell Nancy it was okay that she was with Jonathan now... he's braver than he thinks.

He sticks at things, no matter how crap he thinks they are, if he knows they need doing. He worked in Scoops Ahoy for a shitty wage because he knew he had to, and he didn't miss shifts or show up late or anything.

He's loyal to people once he's decided they're his friend. He fought so hard to keep things from the Russians, getting beaten up pretty badly yet again, and only started giving names and information once he was drugged and couldn't help but talk. He fell in love with Robin a little, only for her to come out as gay to him when he admitted it, and this didn't change a single thing about how he treated her.
