Personality
Where to start with Ciel? Ciel is not a pleasant boy. He’s proud, vindictive and ruthless. He manipulates others gladly if it’ll help him achieve his goal; vengeance toward the people who killed his family and abused and humiliated him. In a moment of emotional turmoil, he summoned a demon and since then, the demon has never left his side, and he has him help him carry out his vengeance to a horrifying extent. All this while feeling that what he’s doing is justified, after all, people are at the core either weak or bad and if you yourself fall victim to others, you simply wasn’t strong enough to make it in this world. So yes, he kills. Mostly, he has his demon do the killing, but in his position as the Queen’s (Victoria) Watchdog, he can and will pull the trigger himself if needed be.
Still. Ciel is 13 years old. He may hold a job, he may be the Lord of the Manor and he might be an assassin directly under the Queen of England, but this doesn’t change that he is a child, and as such, he can be very confounded when faced with situations he can’t handle/foresee. One example, and a person who manages to often catch him off guard is his fiancée Elizabeth Midford. She goes against everything Ciel thinks about humanity at large. She’s pure, loving, loveable, bubbly and dedicated, and from what he sees, almost completely without ulterior motives.
Another thing is that he’s got quite the complex for his short stature and his age, as he feels he’s never taken as serious as he would have liked. Sure, he’s a noble man, he’s an Earl, so a certain amount of respect is there, but it’s not respect for him as a person, it’s more respect for his title. Not even his butler/bonded demon really respect him. Well, especially not him, if we’re to be honest, and it frustrates Ciel a lot. Again, as previously noted, he’s proud, maybe too proud.
Ciel has been through horrible things no one should have to suffer through, his family killed, himself and his twin brother caged up by cultists for a month when they were ten years old (just turned, even) and during that month they were repeatedly gangraped as well. This culminated in Ciel’s brother being stabbed to death on a sacrificial altar right in front of his eyes and Ciel making the contract with the demon. This has left him with quite a few triggers, especially with things that remind him of the night his brother died. He hates being touched, naturally, and he’s prone to panic attacks that take the form of really bad asthma attacks. He was sickly with asthma as a small child, something he inherited from his mother, and while he’s gotten better over the years, if he panics, he’s prone to attacks still. He hates this, hates any signs that he’s weak and helpless and if he can avoid it, he doesn’t talk about it at all. Anything to keep from coming off as a victim in any way.
It should be noted that Elizabeth is, in fact, Ciel’s brother’s fiancée, not his own. Why? Well, Ciel’s brother was the oldest. He was the heir, the strong brother, the promise of the family, while Ciel was shy and weak and a lot more fragile. It would look bad, Ciel thought, if everyone learned his brother was dead and he lived… So, he assumed his brother’s role. Took his name, tried to emulate his personality, his mannerisms… Stepping into his shoes and pretending that he himself was the dead twin. Ciel? Ciel is the name of the brother, not him. But that’s okay, he tries to tell himself. It’s the way the Phantomhive legacy can live on. If Ciel lived and not him. So, it’s okay. The fragile, sensitive little boy has no place as the Queen’s Watchdog after all.
What Ciel doesn’t realize, is that over time, the farce keeps eating at him, more and more. Having to pretend to be someone else, being unallowed to mourn him properly, ever moving forward… That’d be hard on anyone, and Ciel is a prepubescent boy.
Will he eventually crack? Will he heal? Ciel, who embraces his pain and allows it to propel him forward, what will be left of him if all the walls are down, if he finds himself again? If he can find his way back to himself after living three of his formative years as his brother, only time will tell.
Powers (if any): None, basically. He has a cursed eye by which he can command the demon he’s bonded to, but said demon isn’t present.
