narrative // secret agent gal
Once more, she left David in a room with blankets and a promise to be back. She just hoped that this particular time didn't mean she'd be taking another unintentional turn in reality.
The blonde decided that, from now on, she would leave metaphorical wrong turns at Albuquerque to cartoon rabbits. But no, the turn from the makeshift room to meet up with the others was simply down into another familiar hallway, with familiar faces waiting just in the next dayroom for her. The others were somber, Kerry with a distinct scowl on sharp features. Syd imagined that the fact that Hank was a scientist first and foremost hit the other woman just a little too close because of her own scientist half.
Ptonomy nodded once, "Did you see the news?" She gave a nod in reply, rubbing her arms absently. "He was a good guy." Mister Memory said quietly, Rudy and Kerry both nodding their agreement. "One of the ones that contacted us with Xavier."
"Me too," the inside-outsider brought up, having mentioned in passing that she knew of Xavier at least. "He was a good man." Kerry shifted with antsiness and spoke up impatiently. "Let's go see if we can kick some ass for him." With that thought in mind, everyone agreed (with the sentiment if not the actual action of battle) and headed to the car. It was a quiet car ride, though not entirely uncomfortable, and soon they were at the same building Sydney and the others had been at in the beginning of November. It still astounded her how time flew by and felt like forever at the same time.
It seemed to be abandoned, but the first one had on the outside as well, so the team still took it carefully. Syd indicated the door that had been the least guarded the first time around, and Rudy took point on that, a simple motion of his head -- and even barely that -- causing it to open as if someone had invited them in. Ptonomy entered first, gun cocked and ready, followed by Rudy and Kerry, with Syd bringing in the rear. The plan was to split up two and two, clear out the area if needed, but information was the prize. If there was something that looked even slightly important, grab it. It could be sorted out later.
The offensive defense didn't seem to be needed, though. The warehouse was empty. Destroyed. Machinery and paper alike looked as if someone ran through in gleeful destruction, screens smashed in and papers burnt in wastebaskets. The others looked to Sydney with various versions of raised eyebrows, asking the silent question as to whether this was a familiar scenario. She shook her head and began sifting through ruined paperwork, hoping that something was salvageable.
A lot of it wasn't, though Kerry picked up a few ruined pieces of technology that she thought Cary might be interested in. Rudy gathered it up from her and made a jaunty bit of a trip out quickly, directing it into the back area of the suv. Meanwhile, she had crouched down and sifted through a box that didn't seem to catch as much fire as the firestarters hoped.
They were files, half burnt and unreadable but she managed to decipher some. CBRO and a some of a name. "Does O-R-O mean anything to you?" Asked as she looked up at Ptonomy. He thought about it and shook his head, then thought about it more. "Xavier had a companion named Ororo. She's cute." That made Sydney chuckle as she looked back at the file, trying to figure out what it was exactly. Her nose wrinkled at the smell of burnt paper, but she flipped through absently. It was just pieces, like making a cheap puzzle by ripping up paper, and didn't make much sense because of it. So Syd dug deeper. Another file, another bit that said CBRO. Ca-bro. C-Bro. She let that turn in her head absently while Nancy Drew'ing the shit out of this stuff.
Ptonomy looked for details as well, both trained and naturally one to do so. So when there was a nook or cranny, he was swiping a hand through it. It didn't help. Until it did. "Well, this could be good." He held up something small, a thumb drive. Definitely helpful. It actually made Syd grin. "That mean you got Bingo?" Asked with a laugh, looking back down. C-Bro again. And B-A-R. She opened this one, then nearly dropped it, shocked to see bits of information that she knew. Because it was about her.
"What the fuck?" She held it out to Ptonomy, who thumbed through it with lifted eyebrows. "This is you?" He asked, which garnered both a nod and shrug from Sydney. Her and not her. And so it went. She was staring at the box, idly poking at it when she realised what the C. Bro was. Not C. Bro. Cerebro. They were files on mutants. From Cerebro? But what? Why? And how the fuck did the Division have them? It didn't make sense, and she felt maybe she should go over that bit later, before she left completely, because it couldn't be. She was being paranoid. Another poke and she saw something else. Something that made her blood run cold.
It was just a piece, there was nothing definitive. But it looked like a cover to a book, and was yellow. And the piece that remained, that Sydney saw, had a hint of what looked to be red lettering. Just like the version of Matilda she had. Oh god. What had she done? Oh god.
But no, no that couldn't be. It wasn't. That was simply not enough evidence, so don't you dare freak out, Sydney Barrett. After the chastisement, she nodded once and stood up, ready to poke around elsewhere. There just wasn't much more to poke around for. So Rudy called it a mission done, pleased with the drive and concerned when she and Ptonomy explained the files of mutants found amidst the rubble. "We'll discuss everything with Melanie and Cary when we return." He said easily, decision made nice and simple.
And with that, everyone headed back to the car, safe and in one piece. She'd be able to keep her promise.
