He was right. And the realization took Elena's breath away. She didn't want to be a vampire. She hadn't asked for any of this. Life wasn't fair, as the saying went. She had to turn away, unwilling to share the emotions playing across her face with Kol, of all people.

"He'll still retaliate," Elena returned, grasping at straws. "If I become a vampire, he'll kill everyone I love just like he did with Katherine's family." No matter which road she chose someone would end up hurt.
