It isn't a bad idea to start in school. I started thinking about it in my fifth year, but I didn't really start studying it until my sixth. If you're strong in transfiguration, you might try focusing on human transfiguration for a while (Professor McGonagall would be the one to talk to about that), as that is really the step before studying to be an Animagus.
