Deux
I thought it might be a nice idea, as we are all still getting to know each other, to put some pictures in my journal. If people want to join in, it would be great to read what other people have to say, whatever school they come from.

This is my mother, Annabelle. She is French, which is why my brother and I got acceptance letters from Beauxbâtons in the first place. She is a Squib but she works in the Ministry of Magic here in France in their Muggle Relations department.

This is my father, Anthony. He is Quebecois and used to work in the International Relations department of the Canadian Ministry in Ottawa, before we moved to Paris for his job, where we still live.

This is my brother, Jean-Claude. He is one year older than me and has now left school. He is now going to a Muggle university because one day he wants to join my mother in working with Muggles.

This is Thetford Mines, the town in Quebec where we come from. This is the place in summer where it is rather warm. I don't think you can see our house in this picture, but it looks very much like those you can see.

This is Thetford in winter, which in fairness, is most of the year round. I think last year it was below freezing from the end of October until the end of March. My grandmother says it didn't come above zero once in that time.

And now, Paris. This is the Rue de Rivoli, where my parents have an apartment. It is one of the main shopping streets in the city and as you can see, it is very busy. It is mostly Muggles who shop there, but you also see plenty of wizards.

Finally, this is our French home. Our apartment is on the top floor, in the building on the left. It occupies the corner of the building that you can see in the picture, and looks down the street in the direction of Les Jardins Tuilieries.

Oh, your mum is so pretty! And I really like the picture idea. Do you just paste them into your journal, or is there a charm or something?

I used a conjuring spell to make copies, and put them in with spellotape. It's quite easy.

It is a fascinating city. Perhaps not so old as London, but there is a lot to keep the interest of most people... and I say that as a not-Frenchwoman, of course.

As I am not French, I feel I can be neutral on the subject... Paris is the city I know best, but there is much to see in both the magical and muggle areas, so a person could go several times and see something new on each visit.

I'm tempted to compare that description with how London is like, but since I'm a Londoner I don't think I can be as neutral as you.

I must say I'm fascinated with France in general and Paris in particular because of its artistic history and architecture.

It is difficult to not passionately defend the place we come from. Some people mock Quebec, and it does irritate me, so I understand the feeling.

The political history is also fascinating, I think. It is linked with many other countries throughout the world and people simply do not realise.

Why do people mock Quebec?

Oh yes. I know a bit about the connection to Egypt, and a bit more about the long history between France and the UK, but not much beyond that, which is a shame.

Despite the fact that there are large cities such as Montréal and Québec City itself, much of it is rural or semi-rural and around 90% French speaking, so there is a strong sense of provincial pride. Combine that with the fact that the accent is very strong, and people think it is something to make fun of.

I find the links to North America to be a fascinating part of the share history, even when Canada is not involved.

Oh, I see. I'm sorry to say the accent is also a usual reason for making fun of certain places over here.

Like I said, I'm not that familiar with those particular links, but I'm curious. I like history a lot.

I can fake a Parisienne accent, but I don't see why I should have to. Besides, I will be speaking English most of the time here anyway.

I think you would probably enjoy the Louvre very much. A lot of the history comes through in the art.

Yeah, there's no reason to do so, really.

Ooh yes, I've always wanted to visit the Louvre! First on my list of places to visit in Paris is the Musee d'Orsay (I think that's how you spell it?) because I'm a big fan of the Impressionists.

They are both so different that it is hard to compare directly. France is a very old country and Paris is very sophisticated, but much of Canada is wild and relatively untouched. I suppose it would depend on my mood.

It is not as cold as people told me it would be. And I like just looking out at the view, when I can. I am looking forward to the first crazy weeks to get out of the way so I can look properly around the grounds.

It feels so strange to hear people saying it's not cold here. The view is pretty great! And I know what you mean -- this past week has been kind of mental. You should definitely explore once things are more settled. Just don't go into the Forbidden Forest. It's (obviously) forbidden.

This is a very nice idea, Anais. I think it will be a good way to get to know each other and to think about home without being to sad, yes? Your home in Canada looks very nice, but very cold.

This is my mother, Dominique, her boyfriend, Jean-Luc, and our cafe. We lived in the flat above the cafe for most of my life. Now we live in a different flat down the street.
