Trois
I have to say, I have really enjoyed this first month and getting to have a good look around the castle. I have found myself lost on more than one occasion, but some of the ghosts have been polite enough to help and to point me back in the right direction when I've needed it. I suppose when you're dead you have plenty of time to memorise the various layouts and routes around the place.

Mostly, though, I've been trying to find my way back to a particular place, and failing. It was way back at the start of the month when I found a room that was really interesting. I think it must have been several floors up, because I remember looking out of the window and it certainly wasn't within a floor or two of the ground outside. It appeared to be snowing, though, and I remember thinking that it was strange because I had just come in from outside where the sun had been shining. It looked a bit like when I am at home in Quebec and the winter had started. And just as I had thought that, a big squashy chair appeared, and the fireplace was lit. There was a big tray of snow, and I was able to pull out one of my maple syrup sweets from my bag, heat it, and use it to make snow taffy. I spent a good two or three hours in there, because it looked so much like one of the log cabins my grandmother has out in the woods. It was so comfortable that I was able to read some books that were in there too - including some books in French - curled up under a big cosy blanket. I've never been able to find that room since, though.

Oh the ghosts here are really nice or at least most of them some of them are very sad and I am sure they are still very nice but they don't always like to talk.

Do you think you might have been dreaming? I don't think there is a room like that here.

I am not stupid. I know that I was awake.

You do? Have you seen it before?

I enjoy a joke, but I don't really play them. Why?

Very! But, then, it is a rather large castle. I haven't been everywhere even on Prefect patrol.

Snow taffy? What is it?

You get hot maple syprup, and pour it over fresh snow. The cold of the snow changes the sugar in the syrup and makes it harder and stretchier, so you wind it up on a fork or wooden stick so you get a treat to nibble on. It's traditional in Québec.

That sounds very nice. Will you make it for us when it snows? I like that you had maple sugar in your bag.

It's the kind of thing you only need a little taste of to be satisfied too, because the sugar is so concentrated. And you know, I think I will. My grandmother was already going to send over some things like proper maple syrup for me for Christmas when she knew I was going to be coming to Hogwarts, so I'll ask her to see if there are some other good things she can send.

It is always good when you only need a little, especially as Sophie and I were discussing how these English meals will make us fat. Treats would be lovely though, I would like Maman to send some things from the cafe but I do not think they would be very nice after the journey.

I've never seen a room like that in Hogwarts, but stranger things have happened here, I guess.

It is really confusing. I do not think I was out of bounds or in a hidden place, but no-one seems to have seen it before. It is very odd.

Maybe it's like an anti-homesickness room and it looks different for everyone. Were you missing Quebec a lot?

I hadn't thought of that. I suppose it would make sense to have a thing about homesickness in a boarding school.

I did not think I was feeling homesick, but I certainly felt much better after having that time to myself. Perhaps that was what I needed.

I don't know anyone else who's found it, though. Maybe it's new this year, because of the Triwizard Tournament?

Well, I'm glad it made you feel better! Snow taffy sounds delicious.

Maybe. But the magic would be so complicated, you'd think they would tell us if they'd gone to so much effort. It's very odd.

It's a very calorific treat, so having too much is not a good idea. But it is a real treat in the winter. We can't really do it the same way in France.

Maybe it's a surprise? It does seem really complicated though. I don't know how it would work.

Oh. I don't really worry about Do you not get a lot of snow in France, then?

Not as much as you would do here. And in Paris, it gets swept away or walked on really quickly, so you wouldn't want to be doing anything with dirty snow.

Don't you have a garden in Paris?

We have an apartment in the city, so we don't, no. Most people live in tall buildings and just have flowers on the balcony, that sort of thing. It is only when you get several miles out that there is enough room for people to have gardens. This is something about this country that seems nice, you have more of them.
