Well. I made the mistake of mentioning the gala to my brother in my last letter to him, and got a reply this morning in which he made a "joke" about how I will never be able to find a boy to go with if I'm going to wear heels with my dress. Really? Is it so off-putting to have a tall date? I would not have thought that all the young men of our schools would think like this. In any case, I shall wear the shoes, date or not. What I intend to wear will look silly with flats.

On a more positive note, Jean-Claude's late reply means that I now have my owl back in school with me, which is useful. Besides, I think Franc will prefer the weather here. He's more used to the cold.

Of course you will wear le heels and of course you will look très gorgeous, ma cherie. It is lovely, I imagine, to be tall!

I will put up a picture of the dress I intend to wear and you will see how it would just not look good with flat shoes! I think my brother is being ridiculous. Heels are sexy, no?

That is not a predicament I have had to ponder personally, as I am of a short enough height that heels are a non-issue when compared to the average height of boys at this school. The social standard that expects a man to be taller than a woman, even when she wears heels, may trace back to the role of men as protectors. Thus, when women are shorter, they may appear to be weaker than the men they are with and in need of protecting. Many female students here have made it clear they do not need protecting. In such a case, any issues men have must be lingering insecurities due to social expectations.

That isn't really what I was asking Yet, even wearing heels, there will be a fair number of boys at this school who would be taller than I am. My brother is hardly short either, yet it seems to be something about tall women wearing high heeled shoes that he is questioning. If he was short, I could perhaps see his point.

If you are willing to limit yourself to the selection of a date from the pool of boys who would still be taller than you would be, wearing your heels, then I do not see the purpose of your brother's statement. He sounds illogical.

Personally, I am not even overly bothered about finding a date, and should I find one, I wouldn't be much fussed if he was shorter than me or not. It was just this statement of Jean-Claude's that got me thinking about the issue in the general sense, as I'm not completely convinced that height is an important matter for the boys at this school. Or from the foreign schools.

It is not a matter that I have thought about investigating before. There have been far more comments from the male denizens of the castle on other aspects of females than their height. As I have neither questioned the boys nor am I one of them, I cannot address your inquiry.

Some boys seem to find it's a challenge to their masculinity or something, or that they'll get teased by their mates if they have a date taller than they are. It's all some sort of social perception that the bloke has to be taller than the girl. Silly, but there you go, humans aren't always known for their logical sense in these things!

I don't think it should be off putting, at least to any boy worth dating. I say rock the heels!

I agree. I think it would be more important to enjoy someone's company first, whilst also being comfortable in the outfit you're wearing.

Maybe some people care. It makes no sense. Tall woman can be stronger than short one.

He did say can be, not are, after all. We all know that you in particular are of the small-but-very-strong variety - don't worry, ma cherie.
