HISTORY

Evangeline excelled in academics, especially in literature and writing. Her empathic abilities began to surface more noticeably, allowing her to intuitively understand others’ emotions. Without fully understanding her nature, she developed strategies to manage the emotional intensity, often finding solace in writing and quiet introspection. She became a source of comfort and strength for David as he coped with Ruth’s absence.
Evangeline attended the University of Bath, where she studied journalism. During her second year, she secured an internship at Zest magazine, contributing articles of personal growth and resilience. After graduating in 1998, she joined Zest full-time, quickly establishing herself as a writer of human-interest stories. Her work often explored themes of identity and belonging, reflecting her own unanswered questions about her mother.
In early spring 2000, David passed away unexpectedly. While sorting through his belongings, Evangeline discovered a birth certificate listing “Father unknown”, a Consular Report of Birth Abroad (CRBA), and an expired childhood U.S. passport she didn’t know existed. She also found a photograph of Ruth with a man she didn’t recognise, labelled “Tarrytown, NY, 1976”. This revelation, compounded by her grief, left her questioning everything she thought she knew about herself.
Processing her loss and the mystery of her origins, Evangeline debated whether to pursue the truth about her biological father. With encouragement from her mento at Zest, she pitched the idea of documenting her journey as a series exploring identity and belonging. She contacted the U.S. embassy, learning that her CRBA and passport confirmed her dual citizenship. With support from The Angelov Foundation for Women in Journalism, which provided funding and mentorship, she prepared for her journey to Tarrytown.
Evangeline arrived in Tarrytown in late December 2000. While continuing to write human-interest pieces for Zest, she is working on her personal project about what – and who – her mother left behind.
