Abilities or Powers: (Please use your own words and be thorough and detailed in your descriptions! Which of these powers might the government have missed during initial processing?)
Corpse Roots: Oliver can see people’s deaths in his dreams and sometimes during his waking hours. Each night, he begins lucid dreams at the top of a nearby hill in a landscape that mirrors the city he inhabits. He walks the region in his dream, however, the dreamscape is covered in long, icy tendrils that wrap around people who will die within the next ten days. The corpse roots will mirror how the person will die—a stroke victim will have the roots wrap around their head, a stab victim will have roots entering where their wound will be, etc. Sometimes, he can see these roots while he is awake. Warning someone of their impending death has done nothing to prevent them from dying anyway--often in the same way-- rendering his ability powerless thus far.
Avatar of the End: Oliver is an avatar of the End, an entity of the fear of endings, death, and inevitability. It is akin to a warlock pact, or magical bond that was not consciously or willfully made as of his current canon point. Through the End, Oliver receives his ability to see the corpse roots. He does not need to actively serve the End, which seeks no ritual or additional fear, as it knows it will eventually get fed due to its inevitable nature.
Oliver did NOT mention his ability or his connection to the fear entity.
How would they behave during the interview process? (Were they cooperative or aggressive during the interviews? What weapons and powers might they have hidden or tried to hide? Were they completely open and honest or did they lie about their identity or abilities?)
False Identity: Oliver gave the name “Antonio Blake” to the Department of Anomalies, and did not reveal his identity, saying that he was an assistant researcher on a sea expedition prior to arrival. There was no documentation on him to prove otherwise. He did not hesitate to respond or act suspiciously when getting called by the name Antonio Blake.
Oliver was reserved, polite and cooperative, but showed a handful of nervous tics both during interviews and when alone. He seemed tired and generally melancholy. He never acted aggressively or threatened the staff, and answered all their questions, albeit untruthfully. He claimed to have no magical abilities and expressed none while in quarantine. Oliver slept restlessly and seemed to have trouble getting a good night’s sleep.
If pressed, he would tell the agents that he used to have bad nightmares, and he reported them to a paranormal archival institute called the Magnus Institute. He would claim that he hadn’t mentioned it at first because the Magnus Institute always was quick to scornfully discredit dreams, and it felt a bit silly to bring it up.
Brief History: Please give a quick summary of their backstory. Include what was going on for them just before they fell through the portal. (Aim for 100-300 words at least, please!)
Oliver Banks had an unremarkable upbringing in England, and moved to London to get an undergraduate degree in economics. After ending his job as an accountant during a public nervous breakdown and breaking up with his boyfriend, Oliver’s dreams took a strange turn. He began to have prophetic dreams of people’s deaths, walking through London and seeing the corpse roots showing the deaths that would occur throughout the city. Oliver had several years of negative experiences with the corpse roots after that, and tried and failed several times to use it for good--including attempts to prevent his own father’s death. In all cases, his efforts were in vain. During this period, he worked at a tarot and crystal shop doing readings and selling merchandise. He had several brushes with the supernatural, and made attempts to save people from the terrible fates, but as his efforts proved more and more futile, these attempts were reduced to small comments of warning.
After that, Oliver began to seek out a place where he could get a night of sleep without seeing the corpse roots. Moving to a rural area helped but ultimately was unsuccessful as the roots continued to plague him, now in his waking hours. Desperate, he became enamored with a research expedition to Point Nemo, an island in the South Pacific that was so far from civilization that at times, the nearest humans were on the orbiting space station. It was a point where he thought he might finally be able to dream without the pull of the roots. He discovered that Dr. Pritchard, a chemist on the expedition, was fated to die in a motorcycle crash shortly before leaving. Oliver followed his corpse roots to the crash site when the time came, and removed Pritchard’s body along with evidence connecting him to the accident. He buried Pritchard in the wilderness and took his ID, then carefully impersonated Pritchard until the expedition was set to leave. He boarded the research vessel bound for Point Nemo, sleep-deprived and set on getting a good night’s rest away from the dreaded roots.
Shortly after the vessel set sail, Oliver was resting in his quarters, growing more lucid as he got more sleep away from the roots. Having realized the foolishness of his actions, he was contemplating what he would do when the other researchers discovered that he was not, in fact, Dr. Pritchard, and resigned himself to hope that they would have mercy on him. When he finally fell asleep, a portal opened up and pulled him through to Eerie Harbor.
Oliver has a habit of obscuring his identity, often giving the name “Antonio Blake” to people when dealing with supernatural matters. This habit seems to be the result of a combination of compulsion, anxiety, and a desire to remain anonymous.
