CDJ: coffeebeandream EXPERIENCE: Here PB: Ryan Reynolds, Gabriel Macht. JOURNAL TO BE USED: This needs to be already created and cleaned up. HAVE YOU READ THE RULES?: Thumpity, thump, thump, thumper.
Basics
FULL NAME: Charles Ascalon Weasley. NICKNAMES: Always goes by Charlie, but will happily answer to Weasley as welll. AGE: 32. BIRTHDAY: December 12th, 1972. BLOOD STATUS: Pureblood. CREATURE STATUS: Human.
Family/Relationships
PARENTS:
MOTHER: Molly Weasley FATHER: Arthur Weasley
SIBLINGS: Bill and Fleur, Percy, Fred andGeorge, Ron, and Ginny Weasley. CHILDREN: None. EXTENDED FAMILY: None of importance. RELATIONSHIPS: The Weasley family wasn't so large when Charlie appeared on the scene. Bill was his protective older brother, teaching how to be a good example for the others that would eventually come along. They were best buddies from day one, a relationship that was further cemented when Percy turned out to have a very different personality. When he was young, Charlie was all about pleasing his mother and making her happy. He was always the first to volunteer to de-gnome the garden, and he was always happy to play outside and leave her alone to her work, especially if Bill wanted to join him, and Arthur taught Charlie everything he needed to know about being a proper man. As he grew older, Charlie diverged from wanting to please his parents so much and wanting to be the perfect son because he discovered that being perfect and proper wasn't exactly fun. So, for his younger siblings like Ron and Ginny, he probably hasn't been the best role model, but he's fine with that because Bill's always had that position in the bag. However, Charlie takes great pride in being very honest with his younger siblings, especially when they look to him for advice or have questions that definitely wouldn't get straight answers from Mum and Dad, even though he might be a bit crude or insensitive about things.
FRIENDS: As far as friends go, Charlie generally prefers to be around people who are like him. Expect to see him socializing not only with outgoing Gryffindor-types, but fellow creature/nature-lovers and various family friends. Making friends has always been easy for Charlie, but there are a few people he'll never be able to stomach, mainly judgmental purists and stringent supporters of the new Ministry. SEXUALITY: Heterosexual. SIGNIFICANT OTHER: Charlie's happily single.
Living Arrangement and Occupation LOCATION: Western Romania, Arad county, but since things seem to be going to hell in the UK again, Charlie's looking to move home soon. CURRENT RESIDENCE: A small cottage located on the dragon reserve where Charlie works, which he shares with a couple of other handlers. OCCUPATION: Dragon Keeper. OCCUPATION HISTORY: After graduating from Hogwarts in the spring of 1990, Charlie immediately accepted an apprenticeship with the Romanian Dragon Reserve. Being the new kid on the reserve was more difficult than Charlie had ever expected it to be, he'd never worked so hard in his life, but he loved every second of it. After a few years of training, Charlie was officially hired as a keeper at the Reserve. He works mostly with Hungarian Horntails, his favourite breed of dragon, and this spring will mark Charlie's fourteenth year with the reserve. CLASS: Working class/poor as dirt.
Education HOUSE/YEAR: Gryffindor, '90.
Politics LOYALTY/ALLIANCE: Order, Weasleys. STATUS: Registered Pureblood, Semi-expat. POLITICAL VIEWS: As far as politics go, Charlie's worried that Britain's on the verge of another war-- he thinks that the new policies are utterly ridiculous, and he's worried for his family. He doesn't care about blood purity or creature status; he just thinks that, once again, the Ministry's taking too many liberties with the power it possesses as a political body.
Appearance
APPEARANCE: HEIGHT: Shorter than the rest of his brothers, but at least he's still got a few inches on Ginny. There was a time when Charlie had hoped to grow taller than Bill, but then Percy came along and eventually shot up above Charlie, so he had to let go of that particular dream. BUILD: Stockier than the rest of his brothers and relatively muscular. He's strong enough to deal with dragons everyday (because telling himself that he needs to stay strong for his eventual return to Romania and his job has kept him sane), but light enough on his feet to turn tail and run from one of his dragons when he was to. EYE COLOR: Blue. HAIR COLOR: Red, although it's a bit more of a muted shade (or as muted as red can be). It's almost always in some sort of messy disarray, whether it's too long or cropped short the way his mother seems to prefer, but Charlie likes to think of it as being artfully disheveled. DISTINGUISHING MARKS: Freckles, freckles, freckles. Charlie's always been a bit of an outdoorsman, so he's got more freckles than the average Weasley from so much time spent out in the sun. There are also the typical burns and scars that every dragon tamer bears, marks which Charlie is almost always prepared to tell some sort of tall tale regarding how he happened to get them. There's usually some sort of stubble covering Charlie's jaw, and although he dislikes shaving, he never lets it get too out of hand.
Charlie's also got a few tattoos, hopefully none that his mother knows about although he doesn't put much effort into hiding them. A Hungarian Horntail, Charlie's favourite dragon species, sits low on his right hip, the tail curling down his right thigh. He's also got an oak leaf, a symbol of Romania, on his right shoulder blade, and his most recent tattoo, the names of his parents and his siblings, runs down his left side over his ribs. PERSONAL STYLE: Charlie usually just wears whatever clothes are within his reach when he's getting dressed, and only later will he worry about when he last washed. He's hardly ever had the need for fancy dress clothes, so really everything that he owns is casual and comfortable, yet highly practical.
Personality
WAND: Holly, 10 inches, Dragon heartstring, bendy. BOGGART: Voldemort; Charlie lost a lot in the first war, he's afraid to think of what he'd lose in another. PATRONUS: Bear.
LIKES: Flying, magical creatures, being outside, easy women, tattoos, whiskey, running, being around his family (most of the time), man time with his brothers. DISLIKES: Books, talking about his feelings, feeling insecure, the assumption that Quidditch players/dragon tamers are stupid, blood prejudices, Death Eaters and purists, being alone or in one place for too long, St. Mungo's and hospitals in general.
STRENGTHS: Good with animals and creatures, loyal to a fault, likely to win in a fistfight, calm and carefree most of the time, good sense of humor, possesses a high threshold for pain, good survival instincts, incurable optimist, honest almost to the point of being rude, fervently protective of his friends and family, brave, can make a surprisingly effective burn salve with common ingredients, and he's more domestic than he'd really like to admit. WEAKNESSES: Stubborn, overly-confident from time to time, not incredibly book smart, impatient, somewhat brash and unrefined, often makes work his top priority, would rather rush in guns blazing than create a plan of attack, wears his emotions on his sleeve, likely to shoot first and ask questions later, somewhat impulsive, has a few escapist tendencies, not always effective in a duel with his wand.
DETAILED PERSONALITY: Charlie likes to think of himself as a rather level-headed guy. He's certainly more laid back than other members of his family, and even though he does possess the infamous Weasley temper, he's relatively good at keeping it in check. Charlie's good at thinking on his feet, and he handles stress relatively well. He'd rather have sound defenses around him than be a person always on the attack. Although he's not much of an intellectual or strategic planner, Charlie's got enough confidence in himself and his abilities to make himself brave, but not stupid. So, although seeking out danger isn't exactly the name of his game, if some one he loves is hurting, he'll run into any sort of dangerous situation without a thought, guns blazing, to protect them.
Despite the easy confidence he's always possessed, Charlie sometimes finds himself prone to bouts of insecurity. Whether it's because he never excelled academically like Bill or Percy, or because he alway managed to get caught when he was up to no good, Charlie learned to hide his weaknesses and play up his strengths and not worry about the things that he wasn't good at. He's always been a man who values actions above words, and Charlie's managed to find a lifestyle which fits that preference. Dragons don't understand words, but they definitely know the difference between a kind and hurtful touch, and Charlie likes to think that he can identify with that a bit. Communicating with creatures might sound insane to some people, but Charlie really believes that there's a link between people and nature. It's also one of the reasons that he loves living on a dragon reserve. Life in the outdoors suits him, and while he enjoys being in the city from time to time, he knows that he needs space and life around him in order to keep himself balanced.
Family means more to Charlie than anything else in his life. Although he sometimes feels the need to distance himself from the Weasley name so he can just be Charlie, he'd never change anything about his family or the way he was raised. He'd do anything for another Weasley or a friend, and he doesn't expect that to ever change. Even though he's a very friendly person, Charlie tends to be a bit closed about his personal life. He's always honest, but everybody has things that they don't want other people to know about, Charlie included. Throughout his life, he's become very good at hiding things from his family, especially since he's lived apart from them for a while, but there are still some things that he'll never be able to hide.
Charlie wears his heart on his sleeve, and even though he's able to emotionally shut himself away from other people, it's also incredibly difficult for him to hide his emotions when he's really happy or upset about something. It's the way that he's always been. He's also got a red-hot temper, but it's incredibly difficult to get him to really fly off the handle. Charlie's good at keeping himself under control, everything in moderation, except when there's a clear reason for celebration or mourning. He likes to have fun, and Charlie throws a party like no other Weasley (or so he thinks), but when he feels despair hovering near, he'll distract himself with anything, destructive or not, to avoid the feeling.
History Charlie was born the second son to Arthur and Molly Weasley on November 12th, 1972. Since he had an older brother, Charlie found an instant playmate in Bill. Although they definitely had their fair share of squabbles and fistfights as children (and even as adults), they were fast friends. Bill left for Hogwarts, and Charlie missed him sorely, but there were always other brothers and his baby sister around for play, so the loss wasn't too great. Besides, only two years later, Charlie joined him at school.
Hogwarts wasn't everything Charlie had expected. Classes were more difficult for him than Bill had ever let on, especially when there were so many new people around to meet and make friends with. Although he wasn't academically inclined, Charlie found that he enjoyed learning about magical creatures, and he even liked Herbology. Examinations never went too well for him, he always got too nervous to perform properly, but he did eventually find a saving grace in Quidditch.
To say that Charlie was brilliant on a broom would be undermining his inherent skill when it came to quidditch. He was entirely dedicated to the sport and the Gryffindor team, even more so after he was made captain in his sixth year. Although he had several offers to join various teams once he graduated from Hogwarts, Charlie turned them all down. He didn't want one of the greatest joys in his life to become his job, so instead, despite his mother's protests, Charlie shocked everybody and headed off to Romania to work with dragons.
Even though Romania was very far from home, Charlie never regretted his decision. The work on the Romanian preserve was hard and difficult, more difficult than anything at Hogwarts had ever been, but Charlie loved every day. He knew that he wanted to spend the rest of his life working with creatures, preferably dragons, and he finally felt like he'd found his place in the world.
The comfortable feeling didn't last very long, though. Soon enough, Voldemort was back on the scene, and Charlie's home had been turned upside down. The Order reformed, and Charlie signed on to work as a foreign liaison. They needed all the help they could get, and travel was easy for Charlie since he lived independently, so he did what he could for the Order. And now, whenever he felt homesick, he actually had a productive reason to return home and visit his family. It was growing more difficult for him to work so far away from his family, especially since he worried, but he managed it because he felt like he was more use to the abroad. That changed after Bill's wedding.
Once things took a turn for the worst at home, starting with the Death Eater interruption of Bill and Fleur's wedding, Charlie returned to Romania to continue drumming up support for the Order with foreign liaisons. Of course, his heart was with his family, but it was agreed that he was of better use abroad and, if the Order did lose out in Britain, Charlie could help prepare the continent for war. The task was daunting, but then the Battle of Hogwarts broke out, Charlie was able to call in the reinforcements near the end of the battle.
Of course, once the smoke had cleared and the dust settled, Charlie felt nothing like a hero, even less like celebrating. Fred was dead, along with Remus and Tonks, and so many others, and at the age of twenty-six, Charlie felt like his life was practically over. He'd fought his war, but what had he survived for? After a few months of quiet mourning (at the bottom of a bottle), Charlie finally kicked a bit of sense into himself and got on with his life because, if anything, he was determined not to squander the sacrifices that had been made by his friends and family during the war. So, at the end of 1998, Charlie returned to Romania. He'd made his life on the Dragon Reserve there, and while he was still grieving for Fred, as well as his friends, Charlie needed a bit of distance from the war and the memories of the tragedy.
Over the next few years, Charlie returned home more often to visit friends and family than he had before the war, but his life was practically the same as it had been before Voldemort's rise; he was up every morning before the sun, he took care of his dragons, spent the occasional night off in the village near the reserve with other keepers, and he pitched in wherever he could at the reserve. He's kept close tabs on the political developments at home, and with new legislation coming fast and furious, as well as witches and wizards being branded, Charlie's more worried for his loved ones living there than he has been in years. He's quietly considering a move home, he's no good to his family in Romania, and in a time when he's needed, he's willing to step up to the plate to do whatever he can.
Samples JOURNAL ENTRY:
Matilde, one of the first Horntails I ever worked with, hatched her first brood early this morning. It sort of makes me feel a bit old, but at the same time, I'm thanking my lucky start that I've not got a brood of my own to worry about. Not that kids aren't awesome, far from it, but it's not like they sneeze fire. That's awesome in my book.
[Private to friends/family] If I were, hypothetically, considering a move back home, you lot would be full of suggestions for places to live, right?
