Character Information Character Name: Greta Lange Nickname(s)/Codename: Genesis Age and Birthday: October 12, 1982 Gender: Female Sexuality: Heterosexual Residence: TBD Faction: Eleos, Safeguard Job/Student?: Curator of the New York Historical Society Museum & Library Registered: Yes Abilities/strengths & Limitations/weaknesses: Power Enhancement (for others): Through physical contact, Greta becomes the dial in which other mutants can turn their abilities up to eleven. The effect is instantaneous, and does not require Greta's effort or even consent, though the effect is concentrated the more effort she puts forth.
Healing Elixir/Poison production: Greta's body is a wellspring of chemical compounds not yet fully understood by science, and changes depending on her intent and emotional state. Depending on her state of mind, the various substances her body produces have the following effects on others when applied directly, intravenously, or through physical contact:
Blood: Positive effects include rapid reduction/repair of physical injury and/or physical illness (ie: cancer, pathogens, contactable diseases. She cannot heal genetic disorders) Negative- her blood becomes a corrosive compound similar to battery acid.
Saliva/Tears/Sweat/Mucus: Depending on her intent, positive effects include a mild-to-powerful sedative with narcotic properties similar to THC. Negative effects (also depending on her state of mind) produce spikes of adrenaline with narcotic compounds, often inducing a 'panic high', or 'bad trip'. Effects last depending on exposure.
Notes: Physical manifestation of her powers can be seen in her eyes. When Greta is healing herself, or is otherwise using her powers for positive effect, her eyes (whites, iris, pupil, all of it) emit a biolumination that is white/gold in color. When her powers are being used for negative intent, or without her consent, that biolumination becomes inky black.
Appearance: Standing at a hair under five foot nine, Greta is taller than average; she has a fair complexion scattered with the occasional band of freckles, especially concentrated on her shoulders and across her cheeks. Her hair is a few natural shades of darker brown with eyes to match, though she has been known to touch it up with highlights once in a while, and she prefers it shoulder-length or longer. She has classic feminine features in the face and body, with strong shoulders and legs, a long, narrow waist and well rounded curves.
As far as style goes, Greta has learned to judge fashions as they come, but generally prefers dresses or skirts, things that flatter her shape without necessarily grabbing attention, unless the occasion calls for it.
Personality:
Subtle: Greta prefers not to be the center of attention if she can help it, so long as she can observe and calculate relatively unnoticed from the back of the room. She is calm, soft spoken, and just as often dry in her delivery as she is pleasant or matter-of-fact. Those that don't know her well often have trouble distinguishing her serious statements from sarcasm.
Honest: (To a point) Greta is not a fan of lying, or liars; the act and intent of deception is sometimes necessary- she knows this- but beyond the fuzzy line of kindness and self-preservation, she finds it crass and a sign of weakness at best. She speaks in earnest, and is often more blunt than many are used to. Honesty is a major driver of her personal moral compass.
Devoted: Greta has always given everything she is to those she loves, and to the causes she believes in. While she may be quite selective in whom she allows close to her, she is loyal, reliable, compassionate, and dedicated to those who make the cut. She is a patron of several charities (especially children's)
Long fuse: You'd be hard pressed to find anyone still alive who has seen Greta lose her temper. She can be annoyed or frustrated or hurt like any other person, but as she likes to put it- she simply has no use for anger.
Fearless: Much like the absence of anger in her life, Greta has never fully accepted the notion of unnecessary fear. Her causes are worth dying for, should that be her fate, so be it. Though she isn't stupid, she is incredibly difficult to intimidate. She approaches her battles with observant caution, and knows her strengths (and weaknesses) in each situation, but will never, ever retreat.
History:
On a US military base in Germany, Greta was born seven minutes before her brother, the twins were born after a particularly problematic pregnancy for their mother, and would be her only successful one. Still, the family was happy; their father a career soldier, their mother a teacher of foreign languages, they bounced around as military families commonly did for the first ten years of their lives. Their stops include Dubai, South Korea, Hawaii, Alaska, and Wisconsin, Texas, and eventually ended up in Washington DC. Whenever someone asks where Greta grew up, her answer is usually some variation of 'all over'.
Moving around so much did a lot for the twins sense of world, societies, and culture, but making long time friendships was difficult. They depended heavily on each other, despite their near-opposite personalities. While her brother was always rambunctious and rowdy, Greta was always a quiet, careful child, however curious. She adopted the older child role of overseer, often directing her brother like a manager (when he needed it), and devoted her life to making sure he didn't get into (too much) trouble.
When the twins were twelve years old, tragedy struck their family by way of a drunk driver, who struck the vehicle their mother was driving. The crash was catastrophic, and would have killed all three of them if Greta's mutation hadn't kicked in. A stoplight security camera captured the collision on tape; seconds after the crash, the back seat of the upside down Lange family SUV fills entirely with a blinding light. She doesn't remember a single detail besides the sound of the crash, but she and her brother were found covered in blood, but without a single scratch in the back seat. Their mother was not so lucky.
Their father never fully recovered from the loss, but still did his best for his children, especially Greta when her mutation was discovered. He accepted a permanent logistics (low key) position in the Pentagon and put the twins in a very exclusive and very small private school. While Greta's new 'talents' were carefully examined and cultivated on top of her studies, her relationship with her brother- who did not have a mutation- became strained. They fought regularly as teens, and her brother rebelled as much as he possibly could. When they were eighteen, he took off as soon as he could. Greta was devastated, and as a coping mechanism channeled all her energy into the next chapter of her life: college.
2002-2004: Despite her father's (and several teacher's) objections, Greta decided not to pursue a career reliant on her abilities, but on something she'd always enjoyed; history. She decided on NYU, and studied abroad every other semester working towards a few different degrees in Museum Studies and Administration, but she wasn't always the perfect student. Being truly on her own for the first time in her life required a lot of adjustment, and her decisions were not always... prudent. She had fun, took risks, and allowed herself to be more exposed and less restrained than ever before.
2004: One fatefully bad decision was to attend a rave located in the basement of an abandoned factory in the meat packing district. It was raided by police, and not everyone escaped before the handcuffs came out. Being twenty years old with an open drink in her hand, Greta was one of them- only she didn't go to Holding like most of the others. She and two others- all of them registered mutants- were taken to a different 'station', processed quickly, and kept in separate rooms. She wasn't allowed to call her father. She wasn't allowed to see a lawyer. The next day she was 'transferred' in the back of an armored van, which drove for what felt like hours, until she was unloaded, fitted with a power dampening collar, and locked inside a northern New York Essential Spider facility- where she wouldn't see the light of freedom for two years.
2004-2006: In a world where little could do any serious damage to Greta, those two years in 'detainment' managed to nearly break her. The tests and experiments weren't always torturous, but sometimes they were, and they were always invasive, and practiced without compassion. She and the others were treated as less than human- subjects to be observed, prodded, cut, frozen, burned. It was there at the 'poisonous' aspect of her mutation was discovered rather quickly, and Greta spent two years learning more about it herself along side her Captors. It was how she eventually managed to escape- along with her entire wing. In order to produce her mutation for certain experiments, the collar needed to be removed. There was a rotation; she learned the pattern, and took advantage. With the help from the others, they left the facility a smoldering rubble, and as a group, went Underground.
2006-2010: Keeping each other safe, the group moved around the country as needed, usually keeping to big cities to blend in more easily. During this time, Greta tried to contact her father and discovered he'd died of a heart attack seven months after she disappeared- the loss was bittersweet, as it lead to reconnecting with her brother, who had become a pro-mutant activist based in Massachusetts after she had gone missing. With his help, and with the help of the Obama administration, Greta was able to reclaim her identity and essentially move on with her life. In a settlement with the US Government, she and the others who'd escaped from the northern New York facility were awarded a large monetary compensation and immunity from persecution regarding the events that destroyed the ES facility, in exchange for a signed non-disclosure agreement stating they would not publicly speak about their experiences therein.
2010-2018: Greta finished her schooling and settled in New York along side her brother and those she'd bonded with while on the run. Through them, and a shared, lingering sour taste left in their mouths about their acceptance of silence regarding ES, she was introduced to ELEOS. At first, it was barely a rumor, then more rumors, and then first hand stories- eventually, right after Greta accepted a position at the New York Public Library, she met a member of the organization face to face- on a semi-blind date, no less. Within a year, she was a full fledged member
2018-Present: On a whim and a prayer, Greta applied for a newly vacant position on the board of curators at the New York Historical Society Museum and Library, and was offered the job of her dreams. She has since introduced more educational children's programs, many involving the specifics of mutants impact on history.
What non-powered skills do expect this character to have?: Fluent in German, English, and Russian. Passable French and Spanish. Thanks to her father, she's been trained in essential mele combat and firearms, but only uses these when it's absolutely necessary (she hates guns) She has a talent for antiquing.
Plot ideas: It would be awesome if she's kind of 'discovered' by the media, perhaps in action. A reconnection of former friends who had since joined Chrysalis, maybe? Perhaps it is discovered she spent time contained in ES.
Are you comfortable with the possibility of this character being killed? Sure
Create five rumors that can be common knowledge to anyone in the game: (These are intended to be fun/add flavor to characters and be world they live in. Don’t worry about being too serious with these! 2 good (factual - but perhaps blown out of proportion), 2 bad (factual - but perhaps blown out of proportion), 1 false - Please share these when you intro the character into the comm) • Good: Greta has been 'rescuing' mutant children from the foster care system for years (she helped coordinate the adoption of one child, who is now her godchild) • Good: Greta's physiology is the key to Immortality for humans (it's theorized, but so far been unsubstantiated) • Bad: A man who tried to rape Greta became insane from contact with her, and set himself on fire (he threw himself off the roof of a three story tower) • Bad: Greta is being manipulated by Chrysalis (they simply know who she is) • False: Greta is immortal (she's just difficult to kill) Trivia: -Greta loves craft beer; calls herself the Oldest Hipster (and truly thinks it's funny) -Horrible romance novels are her secret shame. -She can't resist a good danish. Especially cherry. -She currently has two cats named Pip and Squeak. -NOT a computer person.
