Glam is loud, upbeat, over the top. He's the bright energy that crackles as you listen to his music, he's the movement of your hips as you dance. He loves things that glitter, shine and *pop*. Glam is often cheerful to the point of hyper, he can go for days without appearing to slow down at all. He just wants to sing and dance, to have a good time and enjoy the moment. Forget tomorrow, it's all about now. He has his down moments, like everyone else, but since he tries to squash them down as much as possible, they tend to be even worse when they do hit. Think screaming, throwing things, crying and vowing never to go anywhere/sing/perform/etc. ever again. And once the worst of it has passed, he'll start writing. His songs are gorgeous and heart-breaking, upbeat and fun, hypnotic and powerful. Glam is rather capricious, and can be a bit of a diva, but he really is a nice guy at heart. Despite the fact that there definitely is a facade to him, a mask that he wears, if you will, that's not all there is to him, but very few people get to see that side. There is also a dark side that comes out when he's performing, and sometimes off the stage as well, although judging him by just that side would be rather unfair. The dark, the light, the temper, the party animal, all of these pieces mix together to form the god that is uniquely Glam. |

History It's alright, you'll be fine baby I'm in control Take the pain, take the pleasure I'm the master of both Close your eyes, not your mind; let me into your soul I'm gonna work it 'til you're totally blown No escaping, where to start? Once I'm in I own your heart There's no way to ring the alarm So hold on until it's over |

Glam got his start in the English art & psychedelic rock scenes of the late '60s, and, in an interesting twist, was seen as both a part of, and reaction to, those scenes. The sound ranged from rock-and-roll revivalism, a al Alvin Stardust, to the art rock music of Roxy Music, and it's also regarded as a fashion genre, in addition to a musical sub-genre. It mixes all sorts of styles together, such as 30's Hollywood glamour, 50's Hollywood pin-up, Cabaret from before the war, Victorian literary and symbolist styles, science fiction and occult mysticism. And let's not forget the over-the-top hair, make-up, clothes, and of course, the platform boots. The man we can thank for the origins of Glam Rock is Marc Bolan, who had previously had a folk duo. He re-named it to T-Rex, and had added electrical instruments by the end of the 60's. Glam as most people know it was born in March 1971, when Mr. Bolan appeared on Top of the Pops wearing glitter and satin, performing his first #1, "Hot Love". And things only took off from there. Later that same year, David Bowie developed 'Ziggy Stardust', using makeup, mime and performance in his act. Hot on their heels were Roxy Music, Sweet, Slade, Mott the Hoople, Mud and Alvin Stardust. They were really popular in the UK, but not so much in the US, the obvious exception, of course, being Bowie. Who, in turn, was the inspiration for acts like Lou Reed, Iggy Pop, New York Dolls and Jobriath, who fell under 'glitter rock', and had darker lyrics than the British acts. 'Glitter rock' was used in the UK to describe more extreme versions of glam, like Gary Glitter and the Glitter Band, who had 18 Top 10 singles in the UK from 1972-1976. Another group of acts, like Suzi Quatro, Ray Wood's Wizzard and Sparks, reigned on the British charts from 1974-1976. Suzi Quatros had a direct influence on The Runaways, the all-girl band featuring Joan Jett. And some already established bands incorporated glam styles as well, like Rod Stewart, Elton John, Queen and The Rolling Stones. There was a sharp decline in the style's popularity in the latter part of the 70's, thanks to the arrival of punk rock (which was seen as a reaction to glam), but it was a direct influence on KISS and other American glam metal acts like Quiet Riot, Twisted Sister and Motley Crue. The androgyny and sexual politics were used by names like Culture Club, Bronski Beat and Frankie Goes To Hollywood. Glam also had a (somewhat subtle) hand in the formation of gothic rock and even punk, which used elements like performance and the creation of personas. Glam washed up on American shores in the 90's, thanks in large part to acts like Prince, Marilyn Manson, Placebo, Chainsaw Kittens and The Darkness. He soon became a fixture in the club scene, and he's been working as a DJ for the last five years, occasionally recording songs when he can get studio time. |
