Hellhounds are not born in the sense that other creatures are born. They are eternal creatures however they must inhabit a vessel in order to walk on the earth. Their vessels come from humans that have recently died. Once the hellhound inhabits the body the vessel has heightened senses speed and healing. They are stronger than normal humans but are weaker during the daylight hours. While the sun will not kill them, they prefer the night.
Hellhounds were long ago guardians to other harbingers of death such as psychopomps and banshees. As these supernatural beings became more and more rare, their reason for existence changed. The hellhounds evolved and branched out. Some became guardians of the dead, protecting their spirits and helping guide them to those who could cross them over. Others became the bringers of death. They became the assassins, the executioners.
Hellhounds are not really hounds. A hellhound transforming into a canine is exceedingly rare. They do however half shift. They can bring forth claws and fangs, their eyes glowing orange like fire. Due to their ability to become near invisible in the shadows, people would only see their eyes. Thus the myth that they were giants dogs was born.
