Canon Point: Gale comes in shortly after he rescued Peeta and Johanna with the rebels of District 13 (about halfway through Mockingjay). He is very involved with the rebel cause and jealous that he can't seem to get Katniss' attention very easily.
History:
Gale was born and raised in the Seam of District 12. He is the oldest of four children, and very protective of his mother and siblings, Rory, Vick, and Posy. Like most of the men in District 12, Gale's father was a miner. He died in the same accident that also killed Katniss' father. It also helped to set a course for their lives.
Fourteen year old Gale met 12 year old Katniss Everdeen by accident over a mutual need to see their own families survive. Katniss' mother could not provide for the family, while Gale's mother did laundry, but that never amounted to much. Gale would escape the fence that enclosed District 12 and set snares for prey that wandered within range. Katniss happened across one of his snares and a partnership was born. Together they hunted, trading some of their game in the Hob to provide for their families. Each year, they both signed up for the Tesserae that would give them more entries into to Hunger Games, but they both did what was needed.
Gale and Katniss became closer, although he never pushed anything romantically until Katniss returned after winning the Hunger Games with Peeta Mellark. The two shared a kiss that would only add to the confusion over the next year. Gale went to work in the mines, and could not hunt as much. Katniss was also taken out on the tour with Peeta.
Since the games, District 12 had took a turn for the worse. Peacekeepers had invaded the territory. Gale was caught trading in the Hob with a turkey he had caught outside the fence. He was chained in the Town Square and publicly whipped until it nearly killed him. Katniss and her mother healed him, but his course was set. He knew that, given the chance, he would join a cause to overthrow the capitol.
A plan to do just that was set into motion. Katniss was going back to the arena, but there was a team that would save her. On the night the dome exploded at the games, the planes came and leveled District 12. Gale helped as many as he could escape to District 13. The rebel cause had been building, and Gale was now a part of it. He would fight for his freedom, and freedom for his family, and Panem. He would also fight for his Catnip, even if that meant going to the capitol and freeing Peeta from his cell.
During the ensuing war, Soldier Hawthorne excelled. He trained hard, even helping in special operations with Beetee. He is very good with traps and snares, and is equally talented with explosives. There were many meetings about their upcoming assault on the capitol after the victory in district 2...and then Gale woke up in the land of make believe.
Previous Game History, if applicable (250 words minimum):
Gale woke up in the Land of Make Believe months earlier. He was thankful to be out of Panem, but very confused as to what to do about Katniss. She and Peeta were becoming closer, although she will always be a part of him. To this day, he cannot quite let her go, even though he believes that she will choose Peeta in the end.
During his time in the Land of Make Believe, he met Thalia Grace. Of all the women he had met, she most closely resembled Katniss, at least in the way she could fight. He did try to convince her to give up her job with the hunters, at least in their current situation, but had only made some ground. Even with an interest in her, he still had an eye on his Katnip.
Personality:
Gale Hawthorne seems to be a very simple man on the outside. He is a kid who grew up with nothing. He has had to support his family in the stead of his father since he was 14 years old. He would sacrifice himself before seeing one of them hurt. The same applies to Katniss' family, who are relatives by extension. During the games, Gale took extra care of Mrs. Everdeen and Prim. He is rugged and rebellious, but it comes from a good place.
On the inside, he is a bit more complicated. He is not completely selfless. He knows that he loves Katniss,and he does like Peeta, but that doesn't stop him from trying to get her attention. He thinks of her as his girl, and he loves her. The thought of losing her gives him an edge, and makes him work harder. Every now and then, he can also be a little underhanded, even if it comes from a good place.
Gale's political views can be a little different. While he doesn't like the rule of the capitol, he also isn't afraid to speak out. He is not afraid to fight, and he isn't afraid to kill. That is a part of war. That is the nature of the beast. He didn't have many problems taking out the Nut in District 2 even if it meant the deaths of some who only served the capitol in order to feed their own families. Wars have casualties, but it is all for the cause.
Some find Gale's attitudes a bit callous and cruel, even though it is simply a means to the end. He can defeat the capitol oppression and move on with his life, giving freedom to those he truly cares about. His view often obscure the bigger picture, which is the survival of the people of Panem, and the right to live in peace.

Dislikes: Feeling trapped, small spaces, Peeta and Katniss as a couple, mashed turnips, rules
