![]() PERSONALITY Dave tends to be hard to read. At first glance, he looks a little crazy or maybe just out of sorts. His mood doesn't fluctuate too dramatically, unless something major has happened and he can't contain whatever emotion he's currently feeling. He tends to look like he just rolled out of bed, and sometimes that's exactly what he's done. Other days he intentionally makes himself look that way. It's all part of the allure of being Alternative. His moods aren't usually extremes. Whether he's happy, sad, or angry, he usually just shrugs and goes on with his life. He's also pretty quiet in that respect. He does reach out to others, but he's hardly every loud about it. When he's depressed, it's more often because something really sucky has happened in his world and in that case he can be very self-degrading. He blames himself when something bad happens in the Alternative world and it takes a lot of time and energy to bring him back around to his more happy side. Dave can be a bit of a goofball. It isn't strange to hear him joke around with others. He has great showmanship and when he's performing his goofy side really shines through (this is also when he gets loud). He's nothing if not a performer, and he's happiest when he's on stage. He thinks kids are great, and probably has a few walking around somewhere. He's still no stranger to groupies, drugs, or alcohol. When he's happy, like really happy and the world is great, he smiles a lot. It's not odd to see a smile on his face, but he usually just grins. It's the toothy smiles that are stranger to see. HISTORY From the ashes of the great fires of his former music genres, Alternative Rock was born. The genre first came about in the 1980s, becoming increasingly popular throughout the next twenty-plus years. Alternative was an entirely different type of music, independent and ~alternative from its other music counterparts. It wasn't quite rock and roll, but it was somewhere between that and heavy metal with a little bit of grunge thrown in the mix. It didn't identify with any one type of genre, and was uniquely its own. But even so, Alternative is still a part of the Rock legacy. It was thanks to the beginnings of Punk rock in the 1970s that Alternative had a chance to break apart and become his own genre. In another sense, Alternative has also meant to encompass any and all music that didn't quite fit in with any other genre. It was mostly music that descended from the ranks of Punk. This may include New Wave and Post-Punk. So all in all, Alternative is quite the broad term in terms of musical genres. There isn't any one definition, beat, rhythm, or sound, but you just know it when you hear it. And naturally, from Alternative came various other subgenres: gothic rock, jangle pop, noise pop, indie rock, indie pop, grunge, industrial rock, alternative hip hop, and rap rock. It was in the early-1990s when Alternative became a living, breathing being. Some of his most infamous bands included Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Goo Goo Dolls, Creed, Bush, Green Day, Coldplay, R.E.M., Sonic Youth, and Radiohead. Many of the bands who identified as Alternative signed with independent labels, as opposed to the more popular music groups who tended to sign with big record labels. Those were the ones who received huge popularity in comparison, getting spots on television, mainstream radio, and newspapers. Sure, Alternative had his prized groups, but they were few in comparison to the bigger genres. As far as popularity went, Alternative didn't have quite the fame as his predecessors. While Rock and Country were still going strong, Alternative found himself beginning to struggle after the 2000's. He's still around and popular, but he struggles these days compared to his own days of glory in the 1990s. He misses those days, when he was much more powerful. But he's still got several groups that he claims as his own. The decline in popularity had begun to go down after the death of legend Kurt Cobain, something Alternative has never (and will never) gotten over. Around the same time, Pearl Jam had sued Ticketmaster which resulted in them being banned from playing in major venues across the US (thank the gods that was eventually fixed). Other bands received less than fanatical reviews on new albums. And then there was the hiatus of Lollapalooza in 1998 when a headliner band couldn't be found. It was indeed a rather depressing time for Alternative. Things had been going strong for so long and then it all came screeching to a slow halt. It was at this time that bands welcoming other types of genres (namely grunge or emo) continued to be popular, so at least Alternative didn't die. He held on to whatever glimmer of hope there was at the end of the tunnel. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, Alternative gained favor again. It wasn't the magical era of the early 1990s, but it was something to be proud of! With post-punk revival came several new Alternative bands, such as Modest Mouse, The Killers, and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Popularity was still strong among the older, more popular bands: U2, Foo Fighters, Coldplay, Muse, Red Hot Chili Peppers. Whatever can be said of Alternative, it's still going strong. It's not the mighty genre it was back in the day, but popularity has grown considerably over the last nearly twenty years. These days he continues to write songs and sing. On occasion he performs on the streets and subways. From time to time he'll drop by Rock's studio and record an album. | ![]() ALTERNATIVE nothin' like you've seen before IMMORTAL: Alternative Rock PANTHEON: New Gods ALIAS: Dave Vedder APPARENT AGE: 30s MARITAL STATUS: Single SEXUALITY: Straight OCCUPATION: Singer/songwriter, occasional street performer CURRENT RESIDENCE: PARENTS: Rock SIBLINGS: Pop, Glam, lots of others KIDS/SUBGENRES: Alternative Country, Gothic Rock, Jangle Pop, Noise Pop, Indie Rock, Indie Pop, Grunge, Industrial Rock, Alternative Hip Hop, Rap Rock (clearly there's a lot of ~intermingling~ in the music family) • Always looks like he just rolled out of bed. • Has numerous tattoos • Still totally has a 'thing' for Country-Jenny NAME: Angela PB: Billie Joe Armstrong DISCLAIMER: Billie Joe Armstrong is in no way associated with this journal or Nevermore.
