He, Veronica Delocroix, and Gaz Lester started their own mystical punk band called "Mucous Membrane". Together they practiced and became stronger at their craft. Eventually, their practices would cause Veronica to lose her connection to the mortal world, and for the band to break up. As he toured Europe with his punk band, he studied with every witch, sorcerer, and magician he could. Following that, he traveled to the United States. He is versed in use of spells, magic items, and rites from hundreds of societies and traditions. He has demonstrated the following powers in the past; Astral Projection: John is able to project both his, and the spirits of others, outside their bodies. Divination: the use of magic to predict the future. Exorcism: John is able to forcibly remove possessing entities from the body they are possessing. Illusion Casting: John is able to create powerful illusions. He was able to trick Darkseid, one of the most powerful and dangerous creatures in existence, by casting a universe altering illusion. Synchronicity: Perhaps Constantine's most powerful ability, and also the most nebulous. John's status as the "Laughing Magician" gives him the power to ride probability like a wave. While he's on the wave, this can take several forms: winning at gambling, meeting the 'right' person at the right time, cause guns to jam, bullets to miss, allow him to escape from seeming impossible circumstances, slow/weaken his enemies, spells to fail, and has effected even Lucifer himself. This is one of the key factors why John can win against seemingly all odds. The problem with this power, is that it only lasts so long as he can maintain his place on the 'wave'. It also does NOT apply to John's allies. As a result, it has led to the deaths of many of his friends over the years.
