Rebecca Rain Whitethere's nowhere we can hideBecca's last celebrated birthday was the big 4-0, but thanks to fair Nordic skin and a fairly obsessive healthy diet, most wouldn't guess her past the mid-thirty mark. Average in height with pale blue eyes and a soft curve in her build, she's turned a few heads in her time, especially with her own sporting natural auburn waves; the color that really stands out against the Seattle Damp. Becca is practical in her choice of style, but is most often seen in hospital scrubs. Other than that, she is a fan of jeans and anything that keeps off the wet chill.
PERSONALITYI can't escape this nowRebecca is a nurse. One of her main drives is an innate compassion and helping people, not so much to make a difference in the world, but to make a difference in individuals, a trait that dominates her personality in all things. Rebecca must help people- she cannot turn her back if there's even a sliver of hope, and even in its absence, she'd find abandoning it difficult. Years in a busy trauma ward and ER have trained her steady hand, cool demeanor, and long personal fuse. She works well with others, and works around those who aren't as coperative.
But even Becca will admit she's no blameles saint. The sheltered, somewhat spoiled girl from a priviledged family became disillusioned with a lot of the world, and mostly with herself for not turning out the way she originally planned. She can be bossy and cynical, even a tad judgemental, especially in personal relationships. While she never intends it, Becca often doesn't realize what she does and says can occasionally be hurtful to the people around her. She is not afraid of confrontation, as long as she firmly believes she's in the right (in which case, she will always have the last word, and hold onto an arguement for years). She's friendly, but not particularly open with people, even those that know her well.
Rebecca sees her daughter as her one big redeemer; the part of her life she's completely, one hundred percent proud of. She can be slightly overbearing as a parent, but is always encouraging and supportive- and will always put her child's needs and welfare ahead of her own. Regarding her marriage, she sees herself as equally at fault for the deterioration of the relationship between herself and her estranged husband, but doesn't know how to reconcile their failed efforts to fix their mistakes and moving forward.
After the world ended, a lot of the frivolous, shallower issues in Rebecca's personality took a huge backseat to the basics of physical and mental survival. Her expertise has given her a solid purpose that occupies her attention from the moment she wakes until exhaustion forces her to sleep- and she doesn't very much. When she's not making sure those around her keep living, she's teaching her daughter the trade in her place. Overall, Becca is quieter, with a more haunted look in her eyes. She never particularly liked violence, but now she abhors it, and will do everything in her power to keep it from erupting within those whose hearts still beat.
HISTORYunless you show me how.• February 12, 1970. Rebecca Rain is born to Suzanne and Charlie Townsend, an affluent city-dwelling couple who waited for Charlie's software company to take hold before starting a family. An only child, Becca was nurtured, doted on, and somewhat spoiled. She was encouraged in all her endeavors, and found acedemics easy as making friends- life was an overall breeze. She aspired to one day be an esteemed, specialized physician, with expertise ranging from cancer to brain surgery.
• In her freshman year of high school, Becca met and instantly became smitten with popular athlete, Jonah White. The two dated through school, and on into Jonah's college. When Rebecca graduated from high school, Jonah had just earned his Associates and the two celebrated with a year-long backpacking adventure around the world, during which- as a spur of the moment decision fueled by alcohol and the beauty of Greece, the pair eloped. When they returned to the states, Jonah entered the police academy while Rebecca attended University of Washington for her pre-med degree. A year later, That's when life through the first curve ball; in her second year of college, despite careful use of birth control, Rebecca discovered she was pregnant.
• Juggling a newborn, a demanding college itinerary, and her young husband's horrible police hours as a rookie proved too much to handle for the girl who was used to having things be easy. She put her degree on hold to take care of their daughter (named Ivy), promising herself she would go back as soon as their lives settled back into a manageble routine. Year after year, the opportunity never returned, and Rebecca becamed more disillusioned with the world as a whole. While she and Jonah had a strong relationship based on love and trust, their dynamic began to strain. Becca found herself constantly giving in on her goals to accomedate his. By the time Ivy was old enough to attend the expensive private school her grandparents paid for, Rebecca had given up on becoming a world-class physician entirely, and decided to grab the lower-hanging fruit by becoming a nurse.
• Over the years of a marriage involving two high-stress, time-demanding careers, Becca and Jonah's relationship strained to the point of a trial separation, which lasted three months before the two reconciled over genuine love and the needs of their daughter. For a while, they did well, until Jonah's mother died, a blow that sent him into a hard downward spiral. Becca tried her best to be there for everything, but could not manage the strain of raising their daughter, her career, and their marriage with Jonah being emotionally and physically distant. They separated again. Three months later, in a moment of weakness, Rebecca slept with a coworker after a long shift. Torn by guilt and a need to do the right thing, she told Jonah, who did not take the news well.
• Three months later, in the mid-spring of 2010, a week before their divorce court date, the Dead began to overtake Seattle. After news reports of a spreading crisis across the world, every country, city, and small town was on high alert, yet no one envisioned just how swift the Outbreak could spread. The city fell into chaos, trapping Becca at Harborview hospital, where she worked- Ivy soon became trapped with her the following day. But at the end of the week, the world truly ended when the military turned on their own country. Seattle was demolished in a twenty-four hour air and sea strike that left the city a near complete ruin- all in an attempt to contain the spreading plague. Harborview was hit directly, and collapsed- trapping Rebecca and Ivy inside with thousands- both alive, and dead.
• By more luck and chance than anything else, mother and daughter were pulled from the rubble by fellow citizens before their deceased counterparts could tear them apart. They were taken to nearby Swedish Hospital, where a small group of survivors barricaded themselves away from the ever-growing numbers of the damned. Six months later, the world as they once knew it was completely over, with no hope of ever getting it back.
