Current mood:dirty (just from watching hoarders)

Shows no one cares about
For the past week or so, I've immersed myself in two shows:

På spåret, a Swedish game show/geography quiz that I recently discovered is available online. And that is the only way I will ever watch a Swedish show (though this is pretty much the only one I'll ever make an effort to watch), because even if someone reminds me 15 minutes before a show starts, I will inevitably forget about it. I think my brain has been rewired to not think of schedules when it comes to TV, so I just can't keep to it.

Hoarders. You know, I used to think I had hoarding tendencies (just take a look at my DVDs), but watching this show makes me realize that I so do NOT.

Because even though I like my stuff, I have no issue getting rid of possessions. Like, I'm currently in the process of getting rid of my VHS tapes. I know that at one point I had at least 700, but since I haven't used my VCR in years (and even then, I used it for work, not to watch those tapes), I'm giving away what others want and I'm trashing the rest. No qualms whatsoever.

But these people... HOLY CRAP! I'm at turns sickened and disgusted and flabbergasted that this even exists in the world. And I just do not get the professional organizers and psychologists on this show - they feel more like enablers to me than people who are going to do any good for these people. It's like they're feeding their completely skewed views of the world.

Not that I'm saying that they should just bulldoze right over these people and do things that are against their wishes, but they coddle them way too much.

Okay, for instance, there was one episode about a woman whose children had been removed from the home because of her hoarding. The only way to get them back was to clear out her house. So, they're going through the trash pile (I mean, things that others had already designated should be thrown out) and they find a plastic slushee cup (used, presumably) and the woman starts to hesitate whether or not it should be thrown out.

At this point, the person who's there to help asks something stupid, like "does this cup add anything of value to your life", instead of the obvious question: "IS THIS CUP WORTH MORE TO YOU THAN YOUR CHILDREN?" And the idiotic woman actually felt that a worthless plastic cup added something of value to her life and kept the damn thing.

Of course, the season 2 premiere that I'm watching right now is the worst of the lot. So far, they've found the corpses of two cats in the debris. *shudder*

My capping continues apace. I capped The Proposal the other day. And I finished Parks and Recreation season 1. Now onward to season 2! (Watching, not capping.)
