BIOGRAPHY
History.
Keira's early years are of that of a normal, suburban family. Her parents met in college, got their degrees and then married and had children. Keira grew up in a quiet cul de sac in Denver, Colorado. Growing up she played sports such as soccer and basketball, did ballet, as well as doing well in school. It was, for the most part, a good life.
She was five when her little brother, James, was born. Going from being the only child to suddenly having to share her parents attention with a little brother was not something she liked. On top of it all, James had been born deaf which meant that he needed a little more extra attention than a baby that was born healthy. It totally upset her life for a few months before she became used to the idea of having James around
As James grew, she and her parents started to learn sign language. They acquainted themselves with the ASL community, and as her brother learned to walk and understand the world around him, Keira found herself becoming extremely protective of her little brother. She didn't let him go anywhere without her, always there to defend him if the need arose, and of course she was always there to translate, even after he was given the cochlear implant device that gave him the ability to hear to a certain degree. It may have not been her perfect life, but it was still pretty damn good and she wouldn't have changed it for anything.
Why does it always seem that when things are going fantastic, that something has to happen to mess it all up? It may sound cliche-it sounds cliche even to her-but it was a rainy night, storms and lightening bright enough to see the mountains clearly at night. Her parents were in the front seat talking about how well her dance recital had gone, she and her brother were sitting in the backseat arguing over whether to get tacos or pizza for dinner. Out of nowhere came the flash of high-beam lights through the windshield, a horn blaring, her mom screaming... Everything had moved at slow speed then. Anyway, in her own memory that was how it seemed. The front end of their car was crushing in, out of instinct she was grabbing her brother's hand and she remembered thinking of the sidewalk on the curb at the intersection they were at and in a flash she and her brother were standing on the corner, staring at the wreckage of their parents car. Neither one of them could explain how they came to be on that corner, other than that maybe they were tossed from the car. Except none of them had bruises or cuts. Then again, no one really paid much attention to them as they were more concerned about the people in the car.
At the age of fifteen, Keira lost both her parents that night. She and James went to live with their grandparents after that and life was never the same.
Later on, after their parents funeral, they spoke only to each other about what had happened last night. She confessed to James that she thought it was she that had gotten them out of the car, he agreed and confessed to her that he thought it was him that had slowed everything down. She had not imagined it at all, it had actually happened. They vowed never to tell another soul. Never. They were young, but they had heard stories of what happened to people that were...more than human. They didn't even tell their grandparents and only told them they could not remember how they came to be standing on the corner of the intersection.
Life went on, but not nearly so grandly. She dropped out of dance, though kept it up at home. She didn't have the love for it as she once hand. She did keep up sports, however. In high school she played basketball and volleyball, doing well in both. She ended up with a volleyball scholarship to Denver University where she decided to go for her nursing degree. It was also in Denver where she experimented with all things, from alcohol to drugs and men and women. It was in college that she realized she liked both men and women, and dated both.
Fast-forward a little and she ended up meeting Margo within the ASL community. She started to fall in love and they both started to build their lives together. It was a great moment in her life, but like all things it seemed that she was set to lose Margo as well. This time, it was not by death but by their careers. Margo took a job at the prison in Colorado Springs and Keira was working at the hospital in Denver. It was only an hour away from Denver, and they did try to make it work for a time, but soon enough it came to a point that between their schedules and the drive time, they just weren't seeing each other. An argument broke out and soon enough they were deciding it was time to go their own ways for a time. With her heart broken, Keira decided to do the traveling nurse bit. Her brother was safe in the ASL community and she needed to get out and see the world a bit.
Then, one day, her world was rocked again. Call it what you will, Armageddon, the Vanishing, whatever it was, the world decided it needed a change. She had been on a plane when people on it started to disappear right before her eyes. When the plane started to lose control and careen towards the earth, she knew the pilots were gone. A full plane of passengers had suddenly went to just five. She grabbed hands of two of the passengers and screamed at the others to grab onto the two she held, making a circle. No one questioned her, maybe it was out of fright, or maybe they knew she had an ability. Whatever it was, she was glad they didn't argue. She thought of a little clearing in Denver where she and her brother used to play and the moment the picture was there in her mind she and the others were standing there, the tall grass brushing against their calves. They were safe, and alive. They five of them stuck together for a bit of time, but soon enough they all went their separate ways.
Keira searched for James for awhile, traveling alone. When she came across people who needed medical help she did her best, but her main goal was to find James. Eventually she came to the conclusion that he was gone, that he had vanished. She blamed herself for leaving him. If she had stayed, maybe she could have saved him. After a bit, she heard about Breckenridge and decided to head there. Maybe her brother had gone there, if not then if he were alive then maybe he'd know to go there. She was set up in a place to live and she took a job as a registered nurse at the hospital there. So far she's been there a month, and so far she has not found her brother.
Personality.
It doesn’t interest me what you do for a living. I want to know what you ache for – and if you dare to dream of meeting your heart’s longing. It doesn’t interest me how old you are. I want to know if you will risk looking like a fool – for love – for your dreams – for the adventure of being alive. --Oriah Mountain Dreamer
At work, one will notice that Keira is organized, meticulous about details, confident and has a seemingly has a never-ending amount of energy. She is serious about her work as a registered nurse, she cares about her patients and can understand that being in a hospital away from everything you know can be a scary thing.
Organization tends to fall away outside of work. Energetic and enthusiastic, Keira loves to be spontaneous, screw plans and trying to figure out what to do, just go out and let life toss you a few curve balls. Who knows what you might find, what people you might meet, what person you come across that can make your heart flutter.
Keira is honest and can be entirely too blunt without realizing it. Don’t ask her if something makes you look fat or if your outfit is a travesty, because if you do look fat or your outfit is horrible, she will say as much, in the nicest way possible. She is the friend that will not allow you to go out if you look horrible. Also, with being honest, she is a horrible liar and just prefers to tell the truth. Unless it is something close to the heart. She’s not so open with her feelings, keeping them tied tightly down.
Because of her energetic nature, she tends to get bored easily. She can’t just be sitting around her apartment, and can generally be seen out and about finding new hobbies or socializing at the bar. She’s a people person and needs to be around people. Not to say that there aren’t a few times where she knows she needs to unwind and will stay in with a movie and glass of wine, but more often than not she’d prefer doing that with someone else as well.
ABILITY
Teleportation - Keira has the ability of teleportation. She can, or should be able to, teleport from one place to another. To be able to teleport somewhere, she has to think about it and picture it in her mind before actually being able to do so. Teleporting to someone else is easier than just teleporting to a random place, all she has to do is think about the person, picture their face, and boom she can be there in a jiff. She can also teleport someone else with her, but she doesn't recommend anyone do that.
The issue with teleportation, or at least with Keira, is that it is never spot on. She doesn't have full control and basically it's because she's afraid of the ability. One time, she tried to teleport to the Golden State Bridge, she had a picture and was envisioning the certain part of the bridge, instead she ended up in the water. Not fun times. She always ends up 'close' to her destination, when she does try, but it's never spot on.
The only time that the teleportation ability really works is when Keira is in danger. If danger comes, in a blink of an eye she can transport herself to somewhere safe with no issues at all; it's the only time that it works perfectly.
